Question is as told on the title, what are your favorite wise remarks of American(or German) generals in the world wars(I and II)?

I became interested in the quotes and life of George Patton several years back, when one of my bosses hung the following on the wall behind his desk:

QUOTE
Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.

Since then, I discovered several more that define his vision of leadership and work ethic. As a manager, I think that all of the "motivational" quotes and such these days, are all just a rehashing of these:

QUOTE
If everyone is thinking alike, someone isn't thinking.

QUOTE
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity.

QUOTE
Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack.

QUOTE
There's a great deal of talk about loyalty from the bottom to the top. Loyalty from the top down is even more necessary and is much less prevalent. One of the most frequently noted characteristics of great men who have remained great is loyalty to their subordinates.

QUOTE
Always do everything you ask of those you command.

QUOTE
If a man does his best, what else is there?

Very interesting. When I first visited the web site http://www.gagsquad.com/
the great American generals' speeches with the powerful music totally surprised me out. And as a matter of fact, this web site game me the interest of the American generals' quotes and speeches, so now I'm trying to get some more stuff.

When you see the top of the site (www.gagsquad.com) you will find 6 generals there, and I noticed the guy in the middle is George Patton and I think the general who is surrounded by the army is MacArther. But, Who are the rest of them? Sorry, I'm still young and don't know a lot of stuff about the U.S. generals. blush.gif

God Bless you and the United States of America flowers.gif us.gif

I have one that isn't by a general per se (though he was a general of the sea, AKA an admiral) and he wasn't german (remember, others were involved in WW's then germany and america)

QUOTE
"You cannot invade the mainland United States. There will be a rifle behind every blade of grass." - japanese admiral Yamamoto.

QUOTE
Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning. -- field marshall erwin rommel

the second from right is air force general Curtis E. LeMay, the one on the end is Macarthur, as is the one on the other side of LeMay, an I'm relatively sure the first one is "Ike" Eisenhower.

QUOTE
"On the question of racial discrimination, the Addis Ababa Conference taught, to those who will learn, this further lesson:
that until the philosophy which holds one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned; that until there are no longer any first-class and second-class citizens of any nation; that until the color of a man's skin is of no more significance than the color of his eyes; that until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all, without regard to race -- until that day, the dreams of lasting peace and world citizenship and the rule of international morality will remain but a fleeting illusion, to be pursued but never attained

War Speech
Haile Selassie was a World War 2 general, wasn't a very good one but technically he was a World War 2 general. The speech and the song inspired by it have some really powerful ideas.

Edited to Add: Of course Selassie wasn't a general but he was in charge of fighting the Italians. That's all I mean.

RU,
Haile Selassie was the emperor of Ethiopia when the Italians invaded that country in 1935. He made an impassioned plea to world leaders to aid his defense. He was the commander in chief of his rather primitive armed forces, but technically was not a general.

The quotes that make me smile are from Patton:
QUOTE
"I would rather have a German division in front of me than a French one behind me." --General George S. Patton

And this:
QUOTE
After the Japanese surrendered in August, 1945, Admiral William 'Bull' Halsey Jr., told his men, "Cease firing, but if any enemy planes appear, shoot 'em down in a friendly fashion"

Hmm, I like this one. From this quote, I can feel that the Japanese were kind of scared of the United States of America's power in the World War II... Or was this Japanese guy just being sarcastic?

I'm surprised you've never heard that one. No, he wasn't being sarcastic and I don't think they were exactly afraid of the power of the US. They realized that we have a very well-armed civilian population. Can you imagine what a bunch of invading forces would encounter in Louisiana?
