Whatever the problems we face with our French allies, they still will be in our debt for saving their butts in WWII. The 9,386 buried at the Normandy American Cemetery near Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer(?) is evident of this.

Also, the rest of the European nations that did not fall into the hands of the USSR also owe us for the money we gave them under the Marshall Plan.

I was just surprised you didn't think more was due.

Don't get me wrong, I think a reasonable amount of loyalty is owed also, that doesn't mean I want a yes man, just an ally that wouldn't try to weasle it's way out of helping us [cough, France, wheeze, France, hack].

We are grateful to America.

But owing something to America doesn't mean that we have to die for it or give it money. The world has changed since WW2 and there are other ways to show our gratitude. I believe one is to keep democracy alive in our country, because it was one of the ideals of those who came and died nobly to help us in times of need.
