I personally believe that the patriot act is good for the US and my argument is as follows.(my civics write up to an ACLU speaker)

How do you feel about the patriot act? Is it good or bad for america?

The patriot act has targeted over 1000 international terrorists and spies over the last year and has convicted terrorist cells in Buffalo, Portland, Seattle and Detroit. Do you really believe that civil liberties of a few are worth the safety of the many? When asked this the ACLU speaker replied yes. That right there shows how narrow minded the ACLU really is.

Safety should come before civil liberties, especially when it is the civil liberties of some for the safety of the majority. Lives should be valued over liberties. And what liberties are exactly at stake here? And how many people do they really affect? The only liberties involved are search and seizure and due process and there are barely any restrictions on freedom of speech that aren’t already in place. A small price to pay for the safety of the nation. It is not like peoples lives are being shattered or they are being ordered around. If someone is being watched through the patriot act chances are they fit a description or are suspicious and they probably have no clue they are even being watched. So how does this hurt them so much that they have the right to put the majority at risk? The ACLU is soo scared that the patriot act is going to create a government that runs into everyone’s house and looks for any little broken law. They are absolutely paranoid the government has not abused its powers, I don’t see the Gestapo knocking at any ones doors. The government knows it must be responsible with the patriot act or else the people will massively protest and basically revolt.

It is true that in our current state most of those searched under the patriot act are of middle eastern descent or are Muslims. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. People meeting those characteristics meet the description of those that are currently at war with the United States. They should have absolutely nothing to hide. As Americans they should be more than willing to give up a few minor civil liberties for the sake of everyone else because there are terrorist hiding amongst them. They might not all be terrorist or radical jihadists but the fact is there are some within their community that are. Law abiding people have nothing to fear. If the government was attacked by I.R.A. then I, being Irish, would have absolutely no problem giving up a few of my civil liberties for the safety of others.

One of the arguments some have is that Timothy McVeigh was a white roman catholic. But they also need to realize Timothy McVeigh was not acting in a large group with the same goal in mind. There are thousands of Islamic jihadist that preach “death to the United States.” Timothy McVeigh was a insane, radical white supremacist who thought that he could incite a race war by blowing up a federal building like he had read about in a book. The government did not need to check into the other people that bought that same book because insane Timothy McVeigh had already blown up the federal building and destroyed his and some of the rest of the readers’ hopes that it would incite a race war. Timothy McVeigh was a gullible moron and is not in comparison with the terrorist the country is experiencing today.

In closing I believe that by attacking the patriot act the ACLU is only protecting criminals and terrorist at the expense of law biting citizens. The ACLU would like us to believe that September 11 never happened and that the perpetrators were of a racially and religiously diverse group. I believe that the safety of the majority is far more important than a few civil liberties of the minority. Again lives are worth more than liberties. With the Patriot Act both safety and liberty are well balanced. If one is not safe, then one is not free.
