5:30 get up and stretch, and help wife with dinner preparation. Feeling mellow (since I have previously vented away my aggression at my job while playing) and happy(since I beat the level, an accomplishment if there ever was one).
No, its not “true happiness” that’s not even attainable by recreation, but that’s a moral absolute that requires its own debate unto itself. But I do feel better than I did before I played the game.

OH my You stop to help with Dinner! I am so impressed! When my hubby gets into a game he is like a giant cinder block till he achieves his level, goal whatever. OK now I will get to the point, I can honestly say that I much prefer my husbands demeanor post-game than pre-game. I will also venture to say that it lowers his stress and aggression unless you consider cooking a hot pot of chili over the edge and a form of sociopathic behavior? bye.gif dazed.gif giveup.gif

Therefore, it's nice to have something UNLIKE REAL LIFE to entertain you. What is difficult about this concept?

Why must violence be the form of "entertainment"? What's wrong with nonviolent games like treasure hunts?

QUOTE
So why aren't the game makers prosecuted under the Smith Act? Did nobody notice yet? If you bothered to read the Smith Act, you would know that it deal with groups that plot to overthrow the government. Not fantasize about it. Nice try though.

My guess is that law enforcement personnel are unaware of this game. GTA3 and Manhunt are games designed to be used as murder simulators - the game makers probably want players to become desensitized and do real acts of violence.

QUOTE
If you honestly do not see the difference between real people and fictional characters, it's called being delusional. Your train of thought is EXACTLY like that of a person who would kill people because of a game, only yours is in the opposite direction. Thinking video game characters are people, and caring about their feelings is along the same lines as thinking real life people are video game characters, and killing them. Obviously, the consequences differ

I know the difference between real and fictional people. But if you read Grossman's book, he explains everything.
QUOTE
I think the problem with this discussion is one man's fascination with the thoughts of others. I can honestly say I don't care if every person in the world fantasizes about murder, rape, child molestation, jaywalking, etc. as long as THEY DON"T DO IT

A sensitive person would not fantasize such thoughts. A desensitized person would.

QUOTE
Because it's MAKES NO SENSE. It's a forum for fans of the game to discuss it, not for people to preach Grossman propaganda. You know what, THIS forum also has no rules against desensitized people posting. I guess it's also part of the conspiracy

The fans of the game to discuss it - people who became desensitized. You're beginning to catch on and you basically just admitted that violent games desensitize people, otherwise the admins & mods of those violent game forums would allow such a rule (assuming they actually cared about players instead of making money). This forum from what I understand doesn't promote violent games unlike those websites.

QUOTE
Flute Player, I really wanted to keep out of this. But you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, Quane is saying he felt relaxed after playing a violent video game, not that he found true happiness. Grossman's argument is ignorant of most player's consensus, these games relax us, and we enjoy playing them.

How can they relax you when they accelerate your heartbeat?
And I'll be happy to answer anyone else's questions as soon as people answer my question - why exactly won't game makers permit players to modify violent games into being nonviolent games? We know what the situation is (copyright laws), but I want to know exactly why.
ConservPat
To answer your question, because people don't buy Grand Theft Auto to be non-violent. Yout buy a game because of its content, and if they want a non-violent game, BUY A NON-VIOLENT GAME. Now you have a lot of our questions to answer. And btw, "accelerates your heart rate?" Caffeine does the same thing, should coffee and soda be criminalized?

But many people don't want violent games. They want nonviolent games, like me. So you haven't answered my question. And what questions would you like for me to answer? I don't know if there are any good things about caffeine so I can't comment on whether or not it should be outlawed.

So buy one.... you dont HAVE to buy violent games. and like you mentioned, there are games that arent inherently violent: the tycoon series, simcity, most sports games etc. so buy those, there is a market for them, so you will never be afraid of not finding some non violent game on the shelf when you go to Best Buy.

If people don't WANT a violent game than they won't BUY a non-violent game, its that simple. The points which I would like a response to are:

NO ONE FINDS TRUE HAPPINESS IN A VIDEO GAME! Come on FlutePlayer. If we're going to outlaw violent video games we might as well outlaw the following:

Football and all contact sports: They promote hitting and possibly injuring others, in addition to putting too much stress on the partisipants to win.

Grades in school: Too much pressure is put on children to get an A, so much so that their lives are ruined.

Violent Movies: People might be desensitized by the graphic nature of the movies, safety first.

The list could go on and on....
And QuaneCorsair's post about how he plays video games and can still be a functioning member of society. And most of Loom's last few posts.

But you haven't answered my question - why is it that violent game makers won't allow people to modify violent games into nonviolent games? I'll tell you why, it's because they know violent games desensitize players. They want players to become desensitized so they'll become used to violence and want more and more of it. There are people like me who'd prefer that "games" like GTA3 should be modified to have the violence removed.
I do believe that tackle football should be prohibited. It's too dangerous. Many pro-football players agree with this. Violent movies should be banned too. Grades in school should be banned also - I agree.

FlutePlayer, dry.gif I've answered your question twice already, it's about time you respond to our posts.

The REASON:

Because if you took the shooting out of a 1st person shooter, it wouldn’t be much of a shooter, would it?
If you took the car stealing and violence out of GTA, it wouldn’t be much of a criminal simulation would it?
If you took the dogfighting out of wing commander, it wouldn’t be much of a combat flight simulator, would it?

Basically, you cant take the premise out of a game and still have a stimulating game. You cant take the goals off a soccer field and still play a game. It… doesn’t… work…
So thus, game makers wont let you take out the guns from a 1st person shooter, no more than a NFL promoter will let you take out the goalposts.

They can remove the gore, and lots of games have settings that you can adjust that limit the gore level.

But taking the striking out of a boxing game doesn’t leave you with much of anything.

We know what the situation is (that the game won't be a simulation game anymore). We want to know why game makers don't want the violence removed so that the games won't be violent simulation games. Why would the game makers think it would not be a good idea to permit people to modify games to not have shooting in 1st person shooter games if that's what players like me want?

And Conservpat, what questions do you want me to answer?

Why can't I modify my computer to be a microwave oven? This is just ridiculous on so many levels. Non violent games exist for people who want them. Violent games exist for people who want them. I don't understand why you would want to buy a game like GTA 3 with the purpose of making it non-violent, when there are hundreds of non-violent games out there? And if you take all the violence/crime stuff out of GTA 3, what would it be? You walking around asking people the time? Helping old ladies across the street? And why do you think that game makers want to turn their customers into killers? How much sense does that make? Do people in prison buy many video games? If somebody wants to be "desensitized" that is THEIR business, not yours, being that it takes place IN THEIR HEAD. Not that you've even proven that games do desensitize. Watching the movie "Aliens", I constantly saw the aliens ripping through people's chest to get out (after hatching inside them). As well as playing some of the most graphically violent games out there, since EARLY childhood, including Manhunt and GTA. Yet, I almost passed out watching my son being born. Why? By your logic I should be completely desensitized by now, and it shouldn't have even phased me.

This is just utter lunacy. By your logic, a well adjusted person is one who has the emotional stimulation/response of a carp. Do you honestly think that life would be better if, from birth to death, people were in a bubble room? By all means then, there are places that will provide you with an environment like that. Anyone can easily check into one of them, and the nice people wearing white coats will provide you with everything you need, and minimize your stress level to zero. But you are demanding the WORLD turn into a bubble room.

But even then, birth itself is stressful, is it not? I guess the best way to avoid stress is if all the six billion people on the planet just commit mass suicide. Once you are dead, you have no stress. And you cannot get desensitized, or hurt anyone. wacko.gif

And Grossman is the final word on video game violence the same way Michael Moore is the final word on gun control and the same way Ann Coulter is the final word on politics. I am getting the impression you are just trying to boost his book sales, for whatever reason.

Edited to add: I must thank you, though. When else will liberals, conservatives, moderates, independents, etc. ALL be on the same side of an issue and in total agreement? You brought us together in ways previously thought impossible. tongue.gif

Alright, I'll bite, either your trying to sucker me into some kind of logic trap, or your ignorance and lack of research into modern video games is beyond belief.

Almost every popular First Person Shooter can be modded. Half-Life, Quake 3, Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Unreal, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, all of these games give the players the tools to turn the game into exactly what they want it to be if they take the time and energy to mod the game in the way desired.

Morrowind and Neverwinter Nights only require you to sit through an hour tutorial to learn how to begin making your own mods. First Person Shooters require a bit more technical experitise than those two because of the technical differences between the two.

You could easily make an adventure comprised entirely of dialogue in Neverwinter Nights, you could also not as easily, remove all combat from Neverwinter Nights' main campaign. If you, or your non-violent friends wanted to, you could make your mod and then freely publish it on one of the many mod sites.

Your argument is false. I tell you again, please go do some research before you come in here with demands on our burdening of proof.

Here are several links to get you started on your non-violent modding career:

This link shows how the developers at Valve directly help get Modders on their feet in creating their own versions of the games.

Hopefully, the AD staff isn't fundamentally against debating about video games, there was an interesting forum closed recently that came to be about violent video games, I'd like to continue it here if I can.

280+ posts later, and it is time to close another one. wink.gif

I'd hate to be a newbie trying to get in on this debate. laugh.gif

Let's give this a month or so before reopening a similar topic.
