Constitution Party The Constitution Party opposes abortion, same sex marriages, democratic government (it wants the USA to be a republic), and big government. My question for debate is, will Republicans lose support to the Constitution Party? Will the Constitution Party cost the Republicans many votes?

I'm surprised the Republicans haven't lost a lot of the ultra-right section of their party. I think a lot of them may not have been Constitution Party members, I believe most of them followed Buchanan to the Reform Party which now is nearly identical to the Constiuttional Party in terms of platform and candidate beliefs. You are truly correct, they have a lot to be unhappy about with the current state of the Republican party. At the same time, I think their numbers are fairly nominal.

Neither the Constitution Party nor the Buchananized Reform Party are growing according to their vote totals in recent elections. But many conservatives are unhappy with aspects of this administration, some with Bush's unwillingness to use the veto pen to control spending, some with his failure to fight aggressively for his judicial appointees, some with his approach to domestic security which is not exactly sensitive to civil liberties concerns (former GOP Congressman Bob Barr for example, who has been working with the ACLU against the PATRIOT Act), some with his adventurous foreign policy (Buchanan in particular prefers isolationism), some with unwillingness to enforce our borders (Buchanan again, and Bill O'Reilly). I personally share to some degree all of those concerns, though I still consider Bush preferable to any Democrat who's running.

Most Americans dislike the Patriot Act. I think many conservatives are going to quit voting Republican and vote for the Constitution Party.

Yes, many conservatives are unhappy with him. Whether it is the mammoth spending bills, or the patriot act. At the same time, I think he wins a lot of those people over with just the way he is. I think a lot of people look at him and see him as an honest, earnest, neighbor who occasionally makes mistakes. I don't think a disagreement over several issues is going to lead many conservatives to leave a well established party and head on over to a rather obscure one that isn't even well established in all fifty states. A conservative could look at his record and feel good about court appointments, the partial-birth abortion ban provision, as well as the encouragemetn of faith based groups.

The Constitution Party? No, I don't know of any conservatives in my...inner circle that are that unhappy with the Repubs [mind you we are slightly unhappy] to vote for the Constitution Party.

The Constitution Party does have an impressive website. Although I disagree with about 95% of the views on the issues, I am intrigued by their endorsement of FIJA laws. More specifically, the right of juries to declare laws as being unconstitutional along with determining guilt or innocence. I'm not sure why, but such a provision would be very empowering to the citizenry. Other than FIJA, there isn't much that I would agree with the Constitution Party on.

With a name like the "Constitution Party," one would hope that their members were aware of it's wording.

From their website, I discovered that they want to impeach six of the nine Supreme Court justices in response to a ruling that they made.

Memory told me that Supreme Court justices were appointed for life. I checked a couple of sites for the text of the Constitution of The United States and I found the simple wording that:
QUOTE
The judicial power of the United States shall be vested in one Supreme Court, and in such inferior courts as the Congress may from time to time ordain and establish. The judges, both of the Supreme and inferior courts, shall hold their offices during good behavior, and shall, at stated times, receive for their services a compensation which shall not be diminished during their continuance in office.

The members of that party have a right to disagree with a decision the Supreme Court makes of course, we all do that from time to time; but if the justices of the Supreme Court had to face the concept of defending every decision they made in front of an impeachment trial in the U.S. Senate because their decision did not constitute "Good Behavior," I do believe that our government would find itself trying to operate with the brakes locked. Can you imagine taking a job where your stated task is to make decisions, but you and your fellow employees may at any time be fired for doing your job?

Elsewhere in their website, I find that they want to halt immigration to the United States, and limit U.S. Currency to being issued in Silver Coins. If you were a typical (wealthy) Republican, would you transfer your support to a political party which wants you fire all your alien employees, legal or not, and convert all your wealth to Silver Coins?

If anything, I would be concerned that the growth of such a party might cause Republicans to have their chauffeurs drive them to the polls! laugh.gif

How many votes did the constitional party get last election?

I think they(and the libertarian party) will find it hard to penetrate the seemingly invincible two party system. Money is the biggest problem isnt it?
