Lady Liberty stands as a symbol of international goodwill to all who visit our shores. But unfortunately, two years ago, she was closed to the public due to security concerns.

Should this and other national monument be closed to the public due to the terrorist threat? Are there other national monuments and icons closed that we're unaware of? And, is Lady Liberty a realistic target and what would it mean if she was destroyed?

Damn, and we just paid all that money to have her fixed!

I'd say it's a damned shame that we can't go up into her crown. We could replace her if she were to be destroyed. But we can't replace the experience for little kids (and big kids!) to climb up inside of her.

Open the monuments! Stop being afraid!!

I fully agree with that statement. Increase secuirty measures, but open it up. We cannot be giving in to terror like this. Our paranoia is getting ridiculous, as is our love for a false sense of security. Think about what would happen if the Israeli's were as paranoid after a terrorist attack. Their whole country would be shut down all the time.

By constantly being afraid, we eliminate the need for terrorists to scare us at all. We're making their lives a bit easier.
I heard that so many times after September 11, but it is true, IMO.

I don't see why national monuments shouldn't be closed off. I remember reading somewhere that it use to be possible for people in buggies or early cars to pull into the White House drive and have the security man at the front door help you raise the top of the vehicle. Some would wish that we could return to an earlier time such as that. I'm amazed that the statue wasn't taken out on 9/11, we could live without it, but it would be a psychological blow, no doubt about it. At the same time, I doubt they could have struck it with the planes, hitting the towers wasn't a cakewalk according to expert pilots. I think we should be practical about such things. I see leaving Mt. Rushmore open to the public. It's not as if Al-Qaeda could travel to the middle of the country in South Dakota and not raise a few eyebrows. New York City? Obviously more security measures would have to be in place.

Yup. Open it - terrorists win when their intended victims behave as if they are terrified. That's the lesson of every other terror campaign there has ever been.

Have you ever been up to the crown of Lady Liberty. The last time I went those stairs are pretty tight. there is no way we could put a armed gaurd up there since the catwalk in some of the places is only enough to let one person pass. With that being said, I'm all for the keeping her open, I'll be darned if I let my fears run my life.

Nope, Of course it shouldn't. It's just like the white house and many other monuments and places of interest within dc.

Why can't we set up enough protection allround the area, to make sure things like 9/11 doesnt happen again. I mean, we do have alot of security nowadays, but we need to get these public places back open right away,.....

I dont think you should be concerned about the Statues getting destroyed. If anyone if going to blow it up it would be the french asking for it back mrsparkle.gif

This thread is littered with unconstructive one-liners. Let's try and bring some substance to this debate or it will be closed.
