Should this and other national monument be closed to the public due to the terrorist threat? Are there other national monuments and icons closed that we're unaware of? And, is Lady Liberty a realistic target and what would it mean if she was destroyed?
I don't see why national monuments shouldn't be closed off. I remember reading somewhere that it use to be possible for people in buggies or early cars to pull into the White House drive and have the security man at the front door help you raise the top of the vehicle. Some would wish that we could return to an earlier time such as that. I'm amazed that the statue wasn't taken out on 9/11, we could live without it, but it would be a psychological blow, no doubt about it. At the same time, I doubt they could have struck it with the planes, hitting the towers wasn't a cakewalk according to expert pilots. I think we should be practical about such things. I see leaving Mt. Rushmore open to the public. It's not as if Al-Qaeda could travel to the middle of the country in South Dakota and not raise a few eyebrows. New York City? Obviously more security measures would have to be in place.
