Time was, life was crueller around the world. Tyrants were common, and so was slavery. It was common that children could "inherit" debt from their parents. But in recent centuries, we've seen minorites be regarded as human beings, women are no longer viewed as the property of the husband, animal rights have increased, and the rights of the unborn foetus are hotly contested in one of the most principle-based debates humanity has ever witnessed.

Will this trend continue into the future, and should it? Where is/should be the ceiling on beinghood? Should we establish new standards as soon as is at all possible, or does the increasing subtlety demand that we take it slow out of respect for the entrenched values of our contemporaries?
