Full Version: Fun with Words

This thread will be devoted to word games. biggrin.gif

The first challenge involves anagrams, which are words that can be rearranged to form other words. Example: GOD can be rearranged to read as DOG. This works in phrases, as well. MARGARET THATCHER can be rearranged to read as THE GREAT CHARMER.

Note: There may be more than one possible answer, and in this particular list, I am looking for single words and not phrases.

1. altitude =
2. backward =
3. cheating =
4. conserve =
5. finished =
6. generate =
7. imprints =
8. organist =
9. parental =
10. refining =
11. sunlight
12. tarragon =
13. triangle =
14. ultimate =

Please feel free to add your own word challenges in this thread, as well. flowers.gif

Here's what I've got so far. I'll do the rest later... wink.gif tongue.gif

1. altitude = latitude

4. conserve = converse
5. finished =
6. generate =
7. imprints = misprint
8. organist =
9. parental =
10. refining =
11. sunlight =
12. tarragon =

Victoria Silverwolf
2. Backward = drawback.

These are hard!

Let me repeat a challenge I left on the Brain Teasers thread some time ago. I'm thinking of the full name (first and last name) of an old-time Hollywood actor. The full name alternates consonants and vowels, and it contains each of the vowels A, E, I, O, and U exactly once each. Those of you who know me should know that this person appeared in the type of films I like. Who is it?

I'll even give you the pattern of the name.

FIRST NAME: Consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel.

LAST NAME: Consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel.
Eeyore
parental=prenatal

Rudy Malone?
Cyan
Bela Lugosi biggrin.gif
Victoria Silverwolf
Cyan is quite correct, of course.

Note that "Rudy Malone" contains a Y instead of an I. Close, but no cigar!
Eeyore
I meany Rudi Malone who I have never heard of, I mean who starred in Citi Lyghts the 1934 masterpiece . . .
Mike
06. generate = teenager
08. organist = roasting
10. refining = infringe
11. sunlight = hustling
12. tarragon = arrogant

Who knows 05. finished ? hmmm.gif
Eeyore
fiendish
Victoria Silverwolf
Great job, Mike and Eeyore! thumbsup.gif

I'm thinking of a famous science fiction author. All the letters of the author's first name can be found in the author's last name, in the same order (but not all together.)

(EXAMPLE: JOE JOnEs)

Who is this author?
Google
Eeyore
Isaac Asimov. no wacko.gif
Ray Bradbury huh.gif
Victoria Silverwolf
Absolutely correct! thumbsup.gif
kmsouthern
since you asked...

finished = fiendish

OOPS didn't see that it was already answered laugh.gif

legislator = allegorist

service = scrieve
kmsouthern
VS - for senator, I was thinking treason (ah what better a pair?) biggrin.gif - but atoners works of course!

and sorry Wertz and everyone, I mistakenly included politics even though the only words that can be made from it are medical terms. Meant to slash that from the list whistling.gif wacko.gif

psilotic is the word, btw...bet you don't hear that one everyday, eh? wink2.gif the other is a medical term that is probably NOT approriate for AD so I'll just let you look it up using an anagram maker if you really need to know...

Good job, everyone!

I wish to propose a game of Word Golf, invented by no less than Lewis Carroll. You start with two words which have the same number of letters. By changing one letter at a time, you change the first word into the second word. At each step of the game, the resulting new word must be a real word in the English language. Here is an extremely simple example:

Change DOG to CAT in three steps:

DOG
COG
COT
CAT

Most games of Word Golf are not so simple. Here is the shortest way I have found to change BUSH to GORE, in six steps:

BUSH
LUSH
LUST
LOST
LOSE
LORE
GORE

Can you find a shorter way?

The challenge: Change BUSH to DEAN (or the other way around.) I have found a way to do this in seven steps. Can you find a shorter way?
Eeyore
BUSH
BUST

BEAT
BEAN
DEAN
Did I do it right?

Well, obviously, we should say "gh" as in "tough," "o" as in "women," and "ti" as in "function," so the correct way to say "ghoti" is "fish." mrsparkle.gif

All murdered by use of a gun. (I was going to say "assassinated," but I'm not sure if that word can be used about a public figure outside of politics, such as John Lennon.) sad.gif

Here's a fairly easy one. I'm thinking of a word that is pluralized by changing one vowel, and also changing the sound of another vowel. What is the word? hmmm.gif
Curmudgeon
Could that word be woman?

Oops! Now I need to generate another puzzle,,,
nikachu
Wait, woman and women don't have another vowel changing its sound.

although the 'a' changes to an 'e' the 'o' sound stays the same (unless you think the plural should be pronounced 'wimmin' in which case gets some elocution lessons... tongue.gif )
Paladin Elspeth
Point of information: In the United States the plural of woman is pronounced "wimmin." Those are a lot of elocution lessons you are suggesting.
