I strongly believe that our border with Mexico, (see Canada note 1) is pores, and completely un-protect-able, short of building and manning what the East Germans had about 12 years ago. I speak from experience, as I have worked on both the Mexican where I witnessed 300 per night come across it and the German. Further hardening of the political boundary would be waste of resources that could be used elsewhere. We need to secure the marine avenues of approach. Other than granting Mexico statehood. How could it be done? It would be far easer to interdict terrorist threats by sea.

Open the Borders or Hide behind a wall?

Note 1:
Canada has taken many security steps in its immigration program, but still has allot of coast-line to monitor.

Question: Will the open border policy survive the Libertarian convention this summer in Atlanta?

Reopened, now with a clear question to debate. Sorry for the delay (stupid holidays).
Hugo
Actually I oppose the open border policy due to the fact we are a welfare state. Open borders would work if we had a libertarian government. We do not.
Izdaari
I'm with Hugo on this one. Not quite with Bill O'Reilly since I don't think using the military to patrol the border would be effective -- since the military is really only good at killing people and breaking things, and they wouldn't be allowed to do that for political reasons, so sending them would be silly -- but I do think all reasonable steps to control the borders should be done. Welfare state + rich country + open borders = magnet for freeloaders.

I cannot predict what will happen at the LP Convention, but I would sincerely hope the open border section of the platform is at least brought into line with current national security realities.

But now, at least in my state (MN) we only give well-fair monies to US citizens. We do allow any children to attend school. If that were the case every-where, am I too assume that most would support the open border?

Where I worked on the Mexico border. It would be near imposable to stop the flow of people, cars, and semi-trucks, comming over. They would stay put in Mexico until the border patrol, would leave, (with a load of them). then the exodos would began.

What is the difference with what Bush said today on immigration?

Labeling all workers here now as "Guest Workers".
Padraig Pearse
During the Mexican-American Wars of the mid-19th century we stopped at their borders over a fear that taking on the Mongrel nations created by the Catholics would be too much of a burden.......

If we allow cheap labour into our country for no greater reason than undercutting the labour of our own people than we should be damned.

My grandparents and great-grand-parents (and great-great) did it the old way - bit by bit - as are many hispanics and latvians and bulgarians even as we speak - doing it.

No, this is a terrible idea.

Once again BUSH is showing his true anti-American, plantation protestant values.

Citizenship is a prize - and it is our own citizens who desverve the opportunity for work.

Aren't their enough poor people in Texas and California??? What, is $6 too low a wage to pay for honest work??? We have to drag into bondage people who'se nations can't create wealth for them so that they will work for $3???

If American businesses can't or won't pay our own people - even minimum wage -then they are traitors.

If it is the choice of American business to ensure their overpaid CEOS by undercutting the rights of Americans to work then they - along with their Caymen Islands Tax Evasions - should go to hell.

I'm not sure if this is the official position of our party - but it should be - I have nothing against South Americans who come here for work or Indians (I mean the sub-continent) or anybody BUT we have rules and they should be respected - not only by those who seek citizenship and/or employment BUT also by employers ---

We are Americans -

George Bush has already lost my vote several times over (Oh, yes, we can hold someone without habeaus corpus - the VERY meaning of Despotism) BUT

he has lost it again

PANDERING

so what??? so that Wal-Mart can pay $3 to a Mexican as opposed to $5 to an American???????

It's not that big a difference and they can afford it,

Americans are not slaves - he is undercutting the opportunity of so many hard-working men and women -

His friends in Texas want to pay a slave wage to Mexicans - they can afford to pay a living wage to Americans.

You know what I'm saying is true.

We can only be free if we take pride in labour and recognise that work deserves reward.

George Bush and all his corrupt family of East Coast money suckers and war mongers get the *** NOTICE: THIS WORD IS AGAINST THE RULES. FAILURE TO REMOVE IT WILL RESULT IN A STRIKE. *** out of our faces -

Okay, okay - I'm taling too much - BUT -
