Has anyone heard about this?

QUOTE
In "American Candidate," a new summer reality show from Oscar-nominated filmmaker R.J. Cutler ("The War Room"), 12 contestants will run presidential campaigns - complete with political rallies, debates, ads and, of course, mudslinging.

The only problem I see is that when the winner runs for presidency, he will be the head of a cult of personality to the disadvantage of properly experienced politicians. But hopefully the public wil be familiar enough with him (or even better - HER!) to not give in to blind adoration. (Not excepting the Repub.. - oh dear, I better not complete that sentence..)

Interesting, no?

That sounds vaguely familiar... whistling.gif

Should be interesting, Corvus - I wonder if, for the average American, it will overshadow the real campaign, though. unsure.gif

Nice way of running an election. I see just two flaws in it:

1) There is no option to vote off the very last one. What if they all suck? Of course that criticism applies to our current system as well ...

2) Since it is a reality show, and people who have any brains don't watch those, the President will be selected by the dumber segment of the populace.

Maybe someone from America's Debate will compete!

Quite true. But it's possible the stupid people watch reality shows because reality shows are about stupid topics. Hopefully whatever superficial issues that will be discussed on the show might get some younger people interested in politics.

This absolutely must become a hit in other countries. Then we can have "Universal Candidate" and usher in the New World Order. By vote!

I'll bet more Americans watch than actually vote in the real elections

In the 2000 elections, 54% of voters voted. But if you count children, then it drops to less than half.

Just a quick two cents - this is on the pay channel, Showtime. I don't personally know many people who pay for Showtime (it averages ~$10/month around here to order it). I won't watch it for the simple fact that I will never pay that much for one stinking TV channel. Otherwise, I'd watch it - like I do other trainwrecks and autoaccidents. huh.gif sour.gif
