Bush the Elder had just come off a successful war of Iraq. supported by a very strong coalition of many actual nations. He however did not uphold his promises fiscally.
People were very upset and worried about the economy. He lost support of his own followers over fiscal policy actions. This cost him the election.

Bush the Second faces similar problems. Even with the success of some of his war on terror tactics, he has an economy that is only in good shape if you already have money. There are no jobs being created and none in the foreseeable future.
He spends like there is no tomorrow and has upset many of his fiscal conservative followers.

Is President Bush about to end up like his father?

I don't feel that the similarities will yield the same results. On the surface they seem to parallel but there are underlying differences.

If I remember correctly I felt that Bush Sr. had only semi-won in his action against Iraq. I distinctly remember feeling disappointed that he did not completed the job. I also remember quite a bit of controversy around the US's right to go after Sadam and take him out of power or was it prudent to demoralize him, impose trade restrictions thus rendering him irrelevant. Well obviously we went with the later. Did this lead the people to feel that we had been successful? It didn't with me. I felt as though we had buckled under UN pressure and that when the inspectors took over we then became irrelevant as well.

Another difference in the analogy is that at the time of the Bush Sr. 2nd election Iraq was a done deal, like it or not. I venture to guess that by the time Bush II runs again we will not have miraculously resolved all that needs to be resolved therefore we will still be engaged in Iraq. The question is like him or not will Americans be willing to replace him with a person that they are not quite sure of. If we all wake up tomorrow and Iraq were a Sovereign Democratic Nation Bush II is in trouble.

The economic parallels will be better judged closer to the election, though the past year my mutuals have done quite well. hmmmmm could it be precursor to economic recovery?
