Lucas Mulls Party Switch

According to a Roll Call article, which is basically gossip if you ask me, Congressman Ken Lucas (D-KY) is contemplating switching to the Republican party.

According to the article, Lucas beat his last opponent 51 to 47. The district went 60% Bush in the 2000 elections. And that was before it was redistricted (assumedly to a more Republican district, but the article doesn't specify).

Basically, this guy is toast in 2004 if he doesn't pull a "Jeffords" now.

I am totally against this.

I feel that the platform on which a candidate runs should dictate their vote. The majority of the politically-uninvolved people elect representatives based on what they say.

I can picture it now...

Trent Lott, Denny Hastert, and Ken Lucas (whatever he looks like) call a press conference. Congressman Lucas starts out by announcing he will switch parties as a result of ideological differences with the Democratic party or to better represent his district. The media's eyes light up as news alerts simultaneously annoy millions of people across the country.

After Congressman Lucas, now "(R-KY)" speaks, it's Trent Lott's turn.

Trent Lott starts a typically boring speech about everything from constituencies and redistricting to a shifting political climate and homeland security.

And then he drops it. He states that he, on behalf of the Republican party, finds it completely disgraceful that any representative of any party would switch parties in the middle of their term, abandoning and disenfranchising their constituents, and forcing the American public to once again see the ugly face of partisan politics.

Senator Lott then turns the floor over to Coach, and he further chastises Congressman Lucas for his utter disregard for his bosses, the people of Kentucky.

Would this not be great, or what?

No to sound cruel, but who cares about Congressman Lucas? Have you ever heard of him before?

If you take what the article says as the truth, he's as good as gone if he doesn't jump ship before the next election anyway. Let's hang him out to dry. In the process, the Republicans would show the American public that they are above the sleazy tactics of the Democrats (except for this sleazy tactic, I guess).

This would give Republicans great press, and the Democrats would likely have to go along with it to save face.

I know, I know. It'll never happen. But it sure would be fun. biggrin.gif

Mike so am I, and I don't care what party it is. There is talk of others jumping to the Republicans. It is bad business. Like you I feel they are elected by people believing in certain standards and beliefs of a party along with the person. I think it should be unlawful for them to change.

I loved the scenario though wub.gif

I could rant on this subject but I won't! (my husband wants the computer) Suffice it to say that I think switching parties after election should be absolutely illegal! It is moraly (that doesn't look right) wrong.
gotta go or get a devorce.

I agree. Totally wrong.

If you want to change your party, fine. Wait until your term is up, and rerun from the other party. But don't do it mid term. ....

One thing I wonder about is why are all these Dems switching parties? Do they simply want to join the majority? Or they want to work with the President? Is the Dem party losing touch with the public?

Here in Georgia, several Dem State Senators have switched to Rep, giving the Reps a majority in the State Senate now.

changing partys in the middle of the election should be wrong. He went for democratic principlas so the people voted for democratic now if he switeched the people of the state should VOTE HIM OUT

Bah!

76% American Conservative Union rating for 2002
60% ACU rating for 2001
74% lifetime ACU rating

Ken Lucas has been a Republican at heart all along. If he switches now, it's because he's come to his senses! Welcome him with open arms! biggrin.gif

Izdaari, FYI, this is the Republican debate forum in the Party Specific debate section. That means that only Republicans can post in this particular section of the forum. We have one for Democrats and Independents, as well. All other sections of the forum are open to everyone. smile.gif

I'm aware. I'm working with the Republican Liberty Caucus (a group of libertarians in the Republican Party) right now rather than the LP. I've been a Republican elected official (admittedly a minor one), and I think I've earned my Republican stripes in many, many GOP campaigns.

Kinda like Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX), who has run for President on the LP ticket, but remains a member of the Republican Party as well.

If you had an option where I could identify myself as a libertarian in the Politics line and as a Republican in the Party line, that's what I would have done. Ok, I've changed my Party info to Republican so I'll be "legal" here.

Would you please consider adding "libertarian" as an option for the Politics line? Thanks much! smile.gif
