It made the front page in every newspaper I looked at that day. It made CNN and the local news. I expected that someone here would bring the topic up for debate, but we have been completely quiet about it. How uncharacteristic of America's Debate.

Barbie and Ken 'Split' was a typical headline. Two days before Valentine's day, it was announced that:
QUOTE
After 43 years as one of the world's prettiest pairs, the perfect plastic couple is breaking up. The couple's "business manager," Russell Arons, vice president of marketing at Mattel, said that Barbie and Ken "feel it's time to spend some quality time — apart."

No one has announced the name of the lawyers that will be representing the couple, the TV's talking heads blithely announced that Barbie would be awarded the house and the car. One little girl who was interviewed on TV said, "It's okay with me, my dog already uses Ken as a chew toy."

Admittedly, 43 years was a very long courtship, but I suspect that Barbie and Ken went through several unofficial marriage ceremonies over the years.

Does Mattel have a right to declare that their relationship is over without explaining at least, what kind of problems the couple had that led to the breakup?

With the President calling for us to preserve the sanctity of marriage, shouldn't they have finally declared them to be husband and wife? hmmm.gif They could have marketed a pregnant Barbie in a few months...

Any comments or insights?

It's about time she dumped him. Imagine waiting for a ring for 43 years and the stupid playboy devil.gif just wanted to have his cake and eat it too!

You'd think that a chick as "with it" as Barbie would have more self-esteem.

Hmm,

On a more serious note, I wonder why Mattel would do this?

Do they want to divest Barbie of her "All-American girl" image? Perhaps she wants to date more guys (i.e. more male dolls). That one seems doubtful to me, since my daughter has never had any real interest in the Ken line of dolls.

There must be some marketing angle here that I am missing...

The saddest part of my contributing to this thread is that I may have pertinent info crying.gif
Did you know that Barbie Married, got preggo, gave birth and bought a Volvo with Ken?
See Barbie Happy Family

And for those of you who wish to see Barbie as big as a House, cause you know I enjoyed seeing it

Now what I really want to know is who gets the house Volvo and custody cause ya know Barbie has so many careers going on simultaneously....... It appears to me Ken would be more suitable as the primary care giver, as far as I know he never had a job, aside of surfing, he can't be all that busy. Unless Barbie was bright enough to have Ken sign a prenuptial, she is in for the biggest divorce court ride in US history. w00t.gif

OK On a serious note I see Mattel's move towards redefining Barbie as a single girl an off shoot of the success of the Happy Family series. Since they now have products focused on the family, they may wish to re-establish Barbie's single fun party girl image.

It's about time Barbie came clean since she has had another man in her life since 1964. ohmy.gif

G.I. Joe is not a boy doll but an "action figure." Ken was metrosexual before the word came into being, but "Joe" had an accessory that Ken never had--a scar on his plastic face--that Barbie found irresistible. G.I. Joe also grew a beard, which showed he was clearly more mature and worldly wub.gif than the "boy next door." innocent.gif

And while it might not be known if Ken is "compassionate," G.I. Joe has always had more of that element of "mystery" about him. After years of bland bliss for Ken and the Barbster, she was ready for a little "action." shifty.gif

G.I. Joe will continue to have Barbie's attention until she asks him about his other "war wound." blush.gif I wonder if Joe has managed to mention it to Corporate?

I became intrigued by this this thread and did some extensive investigation to come up with what I think is the definitive Barbie post.
