It made the front page in every newspaper I looked at that day. It made CNN and the local news. I expected that someone here would bring the topic up for debate, but we have been completely quiet about it. How uncharacteristic of America's Debate.
Barbie and Ken 'Split' was a typical headline. Two days before Valentine's day, it was announced that:
QUOTE
After 43 years as one of the world's prettiest pairs, the perfect plastic couple is breaking up. The couple's "business manager," Russell Arons, vice president of marketing at Mattel, said that Barbie and Ken "feel it's time to spend some quality time — apart."
No one has announced the name of the lawyers that will be representing the couple, the TV's talking heads blithely announced that Barbie would be awarded the house
and the car. One little girl who was interviewed on TV said, "It's okay with me, my dog already uses Ken as a chew toy."
Admittedly, 43 years was a very long courtship, but I suspect that Barbie and Ken went through several unofficial marriage ceremonies over the years.
Does Mattel have a right to declare that their relationship is over without explaining at least, what kind of problems the couple had that led to the breakup?
With the President calling for us to preserve the sanctity of marriage, shouldn't they have finally declared them to be husband and wife?

They could have marketed a pregnant Barbie in a few months...
Any comments or insights?
