Do not post one-liners. They are unconstructive and against the Rules. Bring some substance to the debate.

TOPIC TO DEBATE:
Is Senator John Kerry's 20 year record in the US Senate an appropriate subject for debate in considering his fitness for the Office of President of the United States? Why or why not?

Absolutely, Kerry's voting record should be fair game...as should Bush's as Governor of Texas. Frankly, with Bush and Kerry there's a very clear choice: a very conservative current President or an extremely liberal next president. All one has to do is look at Kerry's votes (I don't mean one or two individual votes but his tendencies over the last 20 years) to see that if elected President he would lead a charge to the Left.
It says a lot when Ted Kennedy is your best political friend...

Of course voting records are fair game. However, when once side paints the others voting record one way or another by selecting some votes on a subject but ignoring others, the side in question looses the opportunity to show that the other side is attempting to mislead America if they do not respond.

I'm not trying to pick on your here but I don't see either of these men as ideological purists.

President Bush is far from "very" conservative. Fiscal conservatism is out the window (even when you give him a pass on Homeland Security and War on Terror spending), he choose to expand the government, like the department of education (the target for eliminations of most conservative groups), rather then reduce it, and he has all but ignored the crisis on our borders.

Senator Kerry is not exactly "extremely" liberal either. He voted for NAFTA, for the Patriot Act, for No Child Left Behind, and has voted consistently for military budgets since 1996. He also voted for the "marriage penalty tax cut in 2001.

These are just a few examples for both of these men. Neither is a poster child for their supposed ideologies. The have both voted with their alleged ideologies more then against them, but I think suggesting they are "very" this, or "extremely" that is simply not accurate.

Following their own beliefs rather then a strict adherence to a political ideology is something that that can be admired in both men.

By reading Fact-Check.org, Vote-Smart.org, etc, people can see how both of these men stack up (*). It's my hope that the majority of Americans will realize that neither of these individuals are right for America's future. But I know that is a pipe dream. crying.gif

* One interesting note on these two is that they both refused to answer the "NATIONAL POLITICAL AWARENESS TEST" and refused to provide this information on 23 separate occasions. If their goal is truly for American's to make an informed choice between the two then why would they both refuse to provide this basic information? hmmm.gif

This thread is rather old. Please start something fresh if anyone is interesting in continuing this debate. smile.gif
