I know this is probably a topic in another thread, but what about the 'patriotic' aspect to the pledge of allegiance? This doesn't seem to get as much attention as the religious debate on the subject, but I think it is just as important.

There are two sides to this. One side of this is that students only get half the story by putting a favorable or self-promoting spin on American History. The other is the 'socializing' argument: K-12 is not so much meant for learning as it is socialization; that is, learning to interact socially with fellow students (citizens to be).

Which side do you come down on, or am I missing something else here?
