Since I normally abhor urban, hip-hop and rap...this one took me by surprise.

Everytime I hear Hey Ya, by Outkast...I find myself turning the radio up....waaaay up. blink.gif

Vincent by Don MacLean is one of the best pieces of music in existence. I forgot about that one, though I would have no problem in admitting I like it, well, since I just did. LOL. tongue.gif

And don't dis ABBA. It's too catchy for it's own good. Voulez Vous being one of the few, ok, plenty of ABBA I have. hehehe.

D'oh!

I would walk 500 miles (Which has to be sung with Full fake Scottish accent laugh.gif )

Argonaut: Oh, no you did NOT! No self-respecting metalhead would listen to ABBA!!! LOL!!

I guess it's the age difference, but the 80's was pretty much a wasteland, music-wise, IMHO. Sorry! I'm an old "acid rocker" from the 70s who played Zeppelin, T Rex, Queen, AC/DC, the Floyd and Sabbath really LOUD and proudly wore a Disco Sucks button throughout high school. But the 80s did bring us Metallica...yaaaaahhhh!!! smoke.gif

mad.gif O.K. Now it's personal! Just kidding! laugh.gif I don't know about our age difference (I'm 37) but I have plenty of Metal self respect! It's just that ABBA came out when I was in elementary school and was one of the first 45's (remember those) that I owned. The other was "Living Thing" by the Electric Light Orchestra. My father was big on The Beatles, The Beach Boys (he went to high school with them), and then Creedence and The Doobie Bros. I loved it all! I then stumbled upon my step-fathers collection. When I heard "Whole Lotta Love" from Led Zeppelin II, and the first Black Sabbath record, the die was cast! thumbsup.gif While I will fully admit to grooving on The Cars first record and "Candy-O when they came out, I could not resist being drawn down the path of Pink Floyd, Rush, and then Van halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden. It was at this point in the late 70's that I was first introduced (by my sister) to "Punk" rock-Black Flag, T.S.O.L., and the Dead Kennedy's (amongst others).

It was at this point (get ready for some more guilty confessions) that MTV first came out (1982?). They had a very short song/video list back then and me and my leather jacket wearing Headbanger buddies would suffer through hours of what we then considered officially to be crap, eagerly awaiting some Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. And while we waited patiently to see/hear something from Priest, Maiden, or Ozzy, I must confess that I did silently groove on such classics as "I Ran"- Flock Of Seagulls, "Jack And Diane"- John Cougar (no Melloncamp back then), and "Hey Mickey"- Toni Basil. There, I said it! Happy now? laugh.gif By the way, The B-52's ROCK!!!

Then a miracle happened, innocent.gif and some bands fused Metal and Punk together, creating what is commonly refered to as Speed/Thrash/Death Metal (amongst many other labels). We all turned off our MTV as bands like Slayer, Exodus, Anthrax, Venom, and Metallica unleashed a completely new sound upon the world. O.K. It was pretty underground and they never got played on the radio or MTV. But it was OURS! Throught the rest of the 80's, I was practically Xenophobic against any other type of music (except fo the "guilty pleasures" I mentioned in my previous posts- here's another I will never admit to publicly- Billy Idol-"White Wedding", "Flesh For Fantasy", etc...).

Then in my mid twenties (early 90's) I began to open back up to other styles of music. I discovered Classical and Opera (The Three Tenors make the hairs on the back of my neck twitch) and Bluegrass (who doesn't smile when they hear a banjo?)) as well as many hard to label "Alt" bands like R.E.M. Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains were great as well! And while Metal/Punk has been and still is my bread and butter, I must admit that I actually bought the CD by AQUA, just for the song "Barbie Girl". tongue.gif

And though I dislike most Hip-Hop with a furious passion, don't worry Dontreadonme, "Hey Ya" by Outkast is a GREAT SONG!!! The video is great as well! thumbsup.gif

Just don't tell anyone that I said so! blush.gif

Another pile to add...

Doobie Brothers "What A Fool Believes"

Gilbert O'Sullivan "Alone Again (Naturally)"

England Dan and John Ford Coley "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight"

Dan Fogleberg "Another Auld Lang Syne"

Simple Red "Holding Back the Years"

Aaron Neville "Tell It Like It Is"

Pat Benetar "Heartbreaker" (or anything else she did i.e. "Fire and Ice", "We Belong", "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and "Invincible")

Did I mention anything by Sade? Especially "Lover's Rock"!
redliner1989
Has anyone listed "Tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" or "Seasons in the Sun".

Those have got to make somebodies list! wacko.gif
DaffyGrl
Argonaut: I was just funnin' with ya anyway (but ABBA?!?! laugh.gif ) That's OK, when I was a kid, I went through a Monkees and Bobby Sherman phase.... blush.gif and that's just about as embarassing as it gets!

These days I'm more a blues/blues rock fan. I am currently waiting with bated breath for Aerosmith's latest "Honkin' on Bobo" to get here (good ol' Amazon). I had high hopes for Kenny Wayne Shepherd, but it seems he dropped off the face of the planet or something.
Titus
"Feelin' Groovy" but the Simon and Garfunkle version. The other version I put down on the Songs that make you Cringe list

Wow this is getting more and more embarrasing biggrin.gif

I too love Hey Ya by Outkast and I'm not a fan of the genre

The most embarrasing song of all time to sing along too has to be Bohemian Rhapsody

Okay, being a really old guy, I can say there is nothing better than the 50's 60's and 70's stuff.

However, the groups I am most embarassed to have known that I like are.....

The Archies

The Monkees

There, I said it! blush.gif

All told, I enjoy all kinds of music, but stuff from these two groups are my "guilty pleasures" whenever I hear them on the radio.

Oh, and Jaime, if you read this far down, I like Marty Robbin's "El Paso" too, but for a different reason.

I worked as a DJ on the graveyard shift for a local "easy listening" radio station in the early 70's, on Friday and Saturday nights, as part of my high school co-op class.

There were times you needed to be away from the booth for an extended period. A trip to the rest room, taking a phone call, getting the news off the teletype, etc. For it's time, "El Paso" was one of the great songs for that, because it ran like 7 1/2 minutes long. A lot of songs since, run as long or longer, but the average at the time was like, 3 minutes, so you could double your time away from the mic.

I love to sing along to this song, and I do all the affected "voices" as it's done as well -- just call me loony!

I was really groovin' to another embarassing song I love on the radio today --

"Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. I love that song, but boy is it embarassing!

I never thought about it much but when ever I hear "Stray Cat Strut" by the Stray Cats, I get the sudden urge to sing along and hunt for mice. Is that a problem?

And I just thought of another one.

Anyone remember the movie Legend? Then you might remember "Loved by the Sun" by Tangerine Dream and sung by Yes frontman Jon Anderson.

Great stuff!!!
Mrs. Pigpen
I just heard a song on the radio that reminded me. I love the entire Meatloaf album 'Bat out of hell'. I could listen to it a million times and not get tired of it. My favorite on the album is, 'Two out of three ain't bad'. blush.gif wub.gif

I love "Jump! (for my love)" by the Pointer Sisters. w00t.gif It is so exuberant. By extension, I also loved the Bounce (fabric softener) commercial that used the music.

Another song I love and have not heard lately is "Lady" by Styx. wub.gif

Edited to add:

I like "Stray Cat Strut," too, Titus. It's cool, and at the same time, I think of the animated Disney movie The Aristocats when I hear it. "Everybody, everybody, everybody wants to be a cat..." cool.gif

Come to think of it, these songs should be in the AD's Greatest Hits thread, not here! rolleyes.gif
