Why aren't they taxed. They are just a regular company like Jiffy Lube or Krispy Creme. They have so much money and real estate.

Please clarify. Do you mean the Catholic Church? Or any agency currently classified as a non-profit religious entity pursuant to IRS standards?
Juber3
Well this is my view.

Seperation Of Chuch and State:

This has dissalowed churchs to g to US churches... They are non/profit organizations. They have no reason to pay because of the seperation. Luckly that was good the seperation happened.
Limpubus
That whole seperation thing you were talking about doesn't cover this. They may be non-profit but this doesn't seperate them from any other organization. If I want an extra building for my non-profit billiards club should i be taxed. Just because the event that is happening inside of these buildings involves a "higher power" should not excuse them.
Rancid Uncle
I meant tax all religious organizations.

Why?

Thats not a lot of cash considering the rest of the taxes. irs.gov (stats)

Why tax a non-profit organization(churches)? They provide services and benifits to the community. Many provide free counseling and homeless shelters. Also their services allow people to express their feelings in a creative way(sermons, classes, arts, projects, etc). Free youth programs and events are a big help to the community by keeping kids of the streets and out of trouble. They do a lot of charity work and missions to hurting areas to provide relief. Some even provide scholarship programs and education incentives. They provide support for single mothers and poor minoritys, finacialy and moral. One in my community has a program teaching how to get off welfare and become financialy independant.

I belive that some things are very important and should not be taxed, such as 401k, non-profit organizations, charity, farm inheritance, etc.

On a side note most of these church institutions have a hard time making ends meet and paying the normal bills (heating, electric, etc), and paying for a full-time pastor/projects. A tax would put most under.

Anything that builds up the community should be encouraged, not discouraged!

We should NOT tax them.

We should tax them because I get taxed for living somewhere. I do agree that inheritance should not be taxed but that's an entire different type of tax. Everyone whether it's wal-mart or the 32nd baptist church of savannah needs to pay.

Here's a hypothetical:

Joe is 65. He worked hard all his life and retires. He's got some money in the bank, on which he has paid income tax. Joe dies. He gives the money to his son. His son pays taxes on that money. His son decides to open a business with that money. The business is successful, and he pays taxes on the income. Profit is rolling in, so he invests some of it in the market. His investments do well. He pulls the money out of the market. He pays taxes on the money. He decides to donate some to the church of his choice. He donates the money.

That same money has already been taxed four times. Don't you think the government has already stolen enough?

As long as they receive no tax benefits they should not be taxed. Once they do, they should have to pay just like any other corp.
Limpubus
The point is wherever the money comes from it needs to be taxed...church/student/businessman/crack whore...equality...

Mike I understand your thought on how the money was taxed to death. But when you donate money to A church or any other non profit organization you can claim that on your taxes, hence you don't pay taxes on your donation.

Yes, and that is one of the few good things with the system. Non-profit should not be taxed. Are you speaking of write-offs? Those are good too. Give the little guy a break, over taxation brings us down.
Juber3
I think not because if we do i will have to pay money to the church rolleyes.gif

The category of not-for-proft should be eliminated from the tax code. Any special interest which has not-for-profit status is being subsidized by putting them in the tax free category. Our country should have rules based on equal opportunity. Not-for-profit is a prime example of ignoring this principle.
