When deciding to transfer something from the private sector to the public sector (or vice-versa), you gotta ask yourself some questions:
1. Can the public sector provide this service effectively?
Although not perfect (who expects perfection anyway?), it's certainly doing a better and more professional job than what it replaced.
2. Can the private sector provide this service just as effectively and for less money?
They could, but given the pressures of the airlines to make security faster and less intrusive, I wonder if they'll devolve back into the mess that let the hijackers on the planes with box cutters. Will it be cheaper, though? I think it'll be a wash, since the private sector demands a profitable enterprise, so that jacks up the costs.
3. Could the public sector provide oversight while the private sector provide the actual service?
This is a possible compromise, but where was the SEC when two HUGE companies (Enron and WorldCom) were running themselves into the ground? Are we comfortable with the effectiveness of EPA oversight these days? I worry that politicians will cut this oversight so that the airlines and security services can make more money and put more contributions in the politicians' pockets.
What's scary is that a Republican Congress and a Republican president are short-changing an agency that's supposed to watch over ALL transportation security in this country. Who'da thunk it?
