Everyone by now has noticed that George Tenet director of CIA has resigned. That got me to thinking about what was the real reason and what caused it.

I would like to go back to 2003 to present one reason.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 26 — The CIA has asked the Justice Department to investigate allegations that the White House broke federal laws by revealing the identity of one of its undercover employees in retaliation against the woman’s husband, a former ambassador who publicly criticized President Bush’s since-discredited claim that Iraq had sought weapons-grade uranium from Africa, NBC News has learn

My other reason involved Chalabi.

At a conservative thinktank in downtown Washington, and across the Potomac at the Pentagon, FBI agents have begun paying quiet calls on prominent neoconservatives, who are being interviewed in an investigation of potential espionage, according to intelligence sources. Who gave Ahmed Chalabi classified information about the plans of the US government and military?

In place of the normal channels of intelligence vetting, a jerry-rigged system was hastily constructed, running from the office of the vice president to the newly created Office of Special Plans inside the Pentagon, staffed by fervent neocons. CIA director George Tenet, possessed with the survival instinct of the inveterate staffer, ceased protecting the sanctity of his agency and cast in his lot. Secretary of state Colin Powell, resistant internally but overcome, decided to become the most ardent champion, unveiling a series of neatly manufactured lies before the UN.

Last week, Powell declared "it turned out that the sourcing was inaccurate and wrong and, in some cases, deliberately misleading. And for that I'm disappointed, and I regret it". But who had "deliberately" misled him? He did not say. Now the FBI is investigating espionage, fraud and, by implication, treason

In both cases someone(one or more) were turning up the heat and trying to discredit the CIA. In both cases intelligence(of a false nature) was run around the CIA and presented to Bush and his cabinet.

My question is:

Do you believe there is power struggle going on inside the Bush adminstration between the CIA and the NEOCONS?

If so, who do you think will come out as the victor?

Yes.

There will probably be "casualties" on both sides. Which group comes out on top has a lot to do with the outcome of the November election. Just as President Clinton saw his re-election as a vindication of his policies, so will the Bush administration see theirs as a vindication of their Neo-Conservatism.

Tenet looks like he has been scapegoated. Yet one more appointee resigning for "personal reasons," or to "spend more time with [his] family." (Gawd, maybe it is all about "family values"--not!) rolleyes.gif

Now there must be people who actually do resign for these reasons, but I believe that it is more often a face-saving measure allowed them by an administration that does not want political repercussions from outgoing employees proclaiming the real reasons they are leaving their posts.

It is hard to say like Paladin Elspeth has said on both sides there will probably be casualites. My only hope is one of the casualties will not be the american people in all of this, because right now we are by the neocon ideas that this administration are following which have been faulty at every turn. As well as all you have to do is look at how they rolled up onto Condi Rice office to push for support of their boy Chalabi even though so much information is out there that shows his true intentions even before the recent information coming out.

Of course there is, this is nothing new. The power struggle exists among all the intelligence agencies and has since their inceptions.

What is new, and long overdue, is serious consideration being given to establishing a national intelligence 'czar' to oversee all intelligence activities. The need to pull all the intel together is clear and immediate. Political bickering must be shelved when dealing with this issue.
