I saw a story on the news this morning about Arizona border residents who are tired of the drugs and people going over their borders. They now have armed militia's patroling those borders because they say our Government is not doing it.
The argument from the other side is that there are only a few bad people and many good people coming through to do the work and untrained people with guns make the situation more dangerous.
Here is my view....yes we should allow the immigrants but they MUST come through in a screened and legal manner. Work should be done to make this easier for them.
But, those borders MUST be secured and people have a constitutional right to form militia's and if the government feels it's dangerous they should make the militia's unnecessary and get to work on protecting our borders.
Any comments?

I agree. Emphasis on screened and legal.
When the government isnt doing its job, it the responsibility of the law-abiding citizens to compensate.

In fact the militias are attempting to train their members.
QUOTE
The first group of 50 was inducted and began a course of training on Saturday, which included a qualification that each seek and be issued a state concealed-weapons permit. Mr. Simcox told Tucson reporters last week the requirement would allow the militia to use the government to screen its volunteers, who would have to pass a felony background investigation and an FBI check.
QUOTE
Mr. Simcox challenged federal and state officials to "uphold the oath of office they took to protect America" from foreign enemies. He also said militia members....will not wear uniforms or camouflage, but will be armed with handguns — no rifles — to protect themselves

Thanks for the article!

"It's time Congress became involved and conduct hearings on a full range of critical border issues, including the militias, immigration reform and overall border policy," he said. "With the issue of vigilantism, the potential for that becoming something very ugly certainly exists."
While I don't like the thought of militia's I do see the necessity of them in extreme circumstances such as this. What I would like to see happen is the government admit they are not doing the job and are ignoring the problem and stepping up to keep us safe.
We have closed up the INS dept. and replaced it with WHAT? Troops in Kuwait? That has nothing to do with keeping American's safe. I'm glad these people are taking a stand to and forcing the issue. But I don't think it's a good long term solution and Bush needs to do something more here at home.

Alot of people hesitate when they hear the word 'militia'. It has been given a bad name by fringe groups, racists, and extremists. Also different Anti-federal groups use the word, as well as the large anti-gov movement here in Illinois and elsewhere.
Militias like this one in Arizona should not be neccessary. The border patrol folk need to clean up their act. I agree with you all the way on this one Danya.
Wheres my buddy Bush on this one?

Does this mean the Montana Militia will be patrolling the border to keep out contraband wheat from Saskatchewan?

I find it ironic that America, the so called superpower, polices the borders of hundreds of nations thousands of miles away but cannot even police its own border, protect its own citizens, or enforce its own laws.
If immigration was a state responsibility like it used to be it is doubtful there would be such a problem.

Two armies patrolling both sides of the border wouldn't keep Mexican immigrants out. We couldn't keep Bin Laden from "emmigrating" to Pakistan. Why can we do it at home?

If I lived there I would be right behind them, these people don't want the drugs and crime that's coming over the border. I agree with Danya that this is not a long-term solution.

EXACTLY.
However, protecting our borders does not mean creating another Berlin Wall. It does mean having a reliable way to screen out those that our intelligence agencies confirm are a foreign threat. It requires a plan that includes intelligence, international cooperation to share information, manpower, technology and money. It's in our entire nations interest so the border states should not have to foot the bill alone. We may not be able to cover every inch of our borders but we can cover the most vulnerable points and also make it harder to live here if you come in illegally. It isn't going to be foolproof...but we can't simply allow our borders to go unchecked.
It makes more sense than spending billions of dollars on ways to spy on American citizens and police their internet use. It surely makes more sense than a ballistic missile defense shield that scientists still aren't sure will work but we are buying anyway to have in place by 2004. Even though it comes with a ballooning price tag nearing a quarter of a trillion dollars. It will probably never even have the chance to prove what a failure it would be in an emergency.
An unreliable system against future missile attacks by rogue states does absolutely nothing to combat the likely hood that we will have another 9/11 sometime soon. Our nuclear arsenal is enough of a deterrent to stop rogue nations from attacking us in such a conventional way. All this shield does is divert needed funds, and global cooperation from the terrorists that are trying to kill us.

If anyone has ever been to Tucson Arizona they will see something Pat Buchannon doesn't wnat you to see. They will see 1/4 of the cars parked outside Best Buy, the Tucson Mall and Home Depot are from Sonora Mexico. Mexicans bring in large amounts of money to Tucson. It's easy to sterotype Mexicans as people who don't have any money and are trying to ruin our country but that isn't true. How many Wal-Marts are there in Hermosilo?

With the FBI running around chacing five phantoms that never existed, I have my doubts a bunch of godd ol' boys are going to distinguish themselves. Now Hilary Clinton has to go on bended knee to the RCMP to apologize.
