I have received several compliments and inquiries about my user name. As a result I thought it would be interesting to discover what is behind other peoples user names.
QUOTE
What does your user name mean to you?
My user name is
OverlandSailor. It is a play on words in several ways. For one, I live in the town of Overland, and I am a Naval Reservist.
It goes a bit further because as a reservist I am a Seabee assigned to a MIUWU (Mobile Inshore Underwater Warfare Unit). Seabees are the construction force of the US Navy and do the vast majority of their work on land. MIUWUs are port surveillance and security units. We provide land based security for ports and water assets in conjunction with Navy IBUs (Inshore Boat Units) and Coast Guard PSUs (Port Security Units) both of which have land based assets but have the primary role of fielding small patrol craft to protect ports and water assets from on the water. They cover the waterside, we cover the landside and also assist them by providing more sophisticated, longer range radar and other surveillance assets.
Lastly, as a former shipboard sailor (in my active duty days of the first Gulf War era) I always felt extremely free when we were at sea. The ocean has a calming, freeing aspect to it that has no substitute. Living in the land locked midwest I try to capture what I can of that feeling, where I can though I am stuck on dry land.
OK, that's what my User name is all about, what about yours?

Mine is a combination of my real name and my sons name.
Paladin Elspeth
Jun 23 2004, 10:31 PM
It's good to bring up this subject from time to time.
My username is a character I use in AD&D role-playing games: Baldur's Gate, Shadows of Amn, Throne of Bhaal, and Neverwinter Nights. I am an old (Advanced) Dungeons & Dragons gamer who used to sit in a circle with other folks and roll those Dragon Dice for fun and adventure.
Elspeth, a medieval form of Elizabeth, is a paladin, a righteous warrior with cleric skills of healing, "turning" undead, and resurrection (in the higher levels). Paladins go forth to perform noble and spectacular deeds and right terrible wrongs. Their specialty is fighting dragons and demons. Think of a Don Quixote with better equipment and magical powers.
Monsters in role-playing games suffer the brunt of my real-life frustrations and anger. I love hacking a demon to pieces when I've had a bad day.
carlitoswhey
Jun 23 2004, 10:41 PM
A nickname I've acquired over the years is carlitos, as I've spent a lot of time in Latin America and Spain and speak Spanish (I'm a gringo). Based on the Al Pacino movie and then a bad dairy product pun... Carlito's Way evolved into carlitoswhey somehow. I use this name online when carlitos is taken.
It's
my whey or the high whey I guess
redliner1989
Jun 23 2004, 10:49 PM
Mines not overly creative, but here goes:
A Redline is a vintage Hotwheel diecast car (they had redline instead of whitewall tires). I collected them when I was a kid and now I still do somewhat. I figure that what I have will put my youngest son through a couple years of college.
1989 is the year my youngest was born.
Thats it.

Hobbes
Jun 23 2004, 11:50 PM
Calvin's best friend is his stuffed tiger, Hobbes. Hobbes exists in two dimensions: reality and fantasy, and the last is actually the most "real"... Hobbes is a normal stuffed tiger, without any functioning vital parts. But, when the two friends are alone he turns into a lethal and man-eating tiger, which only Calvin knows how to control. Even if Calvin thinks of Hobbes as a constant living creature, he is the only one capable of communicating with the tiger. Together they have a fantastic time, and Calvin really doesn't need any other friends. Both characters are based on Middle Ages philosphers John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes.
Thomas Hobbes(1588-1679), English philosopher and political theorist, naturalistic theories helped him steer what he perceived to be a middle course between an exclusive emphasis on divine right of kings to rule and an exclusive emphasis on human responsibility for establishing a democratic form of government.
Hobbes was good-natured, intelligent, friendly, and enthusiastic. The cartoon Hobbes was very like Thomas in a sneaking-up-and-pouncing sort of way. In the comic strip there are two versions of the cartoon Hobbes. One is Hobbes, who, as a lifeless icon that miraculously comes to life whenever Calvin needs him. Another is of Hobbes as only the product of Calvin's over-active imagination.
Therefore, Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees Hobbes another way. There are two versions of reality, and each makes complete sense to the participant who sees it. Perhaps that is a good metaphor for how modern politics works. Politicians just don't see the world exactly the same way that taxpayers do.
Which is how I try to approach debates--viewing things pragmatically, trying to determine the two realities of each sides perceptions, and finding the common ground. Oh, and injecting a bit of humor every now and then

.
Plus...I really like tigers! So, seemed to be a good fit.

Jun 23 2004, 11:50 PM
I'll have to admit lack of creativity on my part, mine is actually borrowed from a Jack-in-the-Box Commercial that ran a few years ago.
Jack is basically referring to this IT guy that works in a cubicle as a "Cube Jockey", I thought it was a clever play on words. It fits (I guess) since I happen to be an IT professional that works in a cube.

moif does not mean anything really. Its what my GF calls me and what I call her.
Titus
Jun 24 2004, 01:15 AM
Ahh, I love explaining this...
My name is a reference to the main character of William Shakespeare's first and most underreated works Titus Andronicus.
Titus is a Roman General who basically walks into a crapstorm without an umbrella.
His daughter elopes with another man, instead of the new emperor Saturnine, which would of pleased both Titus and the emeperor. So Saturnine then chooses the Queen of the Goths who Titus just captured, Tamora. Tamora's eldest son was slain by Titus in a Roman ritual, and needless to say, she's a bit miffed. Along with her other two sons, Chiron and Demetrius, and her moor lover Aaron she uses her new found power to make Titus' life utter hell on Earth.
Through the course of the story, her, Aaron and her sons manage to...
Exile Titus' oldest son...
Frame two other sons for murder, by which they claim if Titus chops off his hand that he will get them back, only to do so and have his sons' heads along with his hand sent back to him...
Rape and horribly mutilate his only daughter Lavinia...
Now...what does that have to do with the name, you ask...
Well, Titus is a man of considerable strength. After his hand and sons' heads are sent back, he looks upon his dishonored daughter, distressed brother (a Senator) and his eldest son on the run... and he begins to laugh. When his brother asks him why he would laugh at such a time like this, Titus replys...
"...for I have no more tears to shed.."
It takes a guy with guts to laugh in face of an ordeal that would drive any modern man insane... which is what you think happens to Titus towards the end of the story, only to find out he was feigning it, all the while plotting his revenge.
He lures Chiron and Demetrius unwittingly to their deaths, bakes them in an entree', and gets the Emperor and Tamora to have dinner with them, whereby the feast on the wonderful dinner courses that was her two sons. In that final scene, Titus kills his daughter infront of the dinner guests for honor, kills Tamora, is killed himself by the Emperor, who is then killed by Titus' eldest son. Aaron is captured by Titus' eldest son and is buried up to his neck, and left to die.
Romeo and Juliet it ain't... but if you read this book, you will see that life can get pretty nasty, and it takes someone who is tough to survive it... and fight back. Something I believe any of us can learn to do.

Devils Advocate
Jun 24 2004, 03:34 AM
Well, mine's pretty obvious. The person who always dissents is the devils advocate, and I figured that since it's a debate site I'd go with something kinda relevant. The thing is I hardly ever go against the general consensus so it's more of a name than a anything else. I kinda wished I'd picked a different name, but I guess it sounds kinda cool.
Maybe I should start going against the common ideas in each thread just because it's in my name...

Well, Daffy Duck put the “looney” in Looney Tunes, and while he’s always been delegated to second banana to Bugs Bunny, Daffy was created first. I like his wacky personality, and the fact that even though none of his schemes seem to succeed, he never stops trying...even when he pokes his beak where it doesn't belong and gets slapped silly. He’s the lovable, wisecracking underdog. And like Chuck Jones once said “"I can dream I'm Bugs Bunny, but when I wake up, I'm Daffy." He’s a hard luck duck, and I can identify with that.
And besides, he's cute.

kalabus
Jun 24 2004, 09:24 AM
I lifted mine from a comic book character named Rex Kalabus. It is some sort of German comic I think. Anyway I have a friend who is really into comic...really in to comics and he said Kalabus one day and I liked the way the name sounded. I use kalabus for alot of stuff. I just basically like the sound of it and its really easy to type quickly. I actually enjoy logging in.
Titus have you seen the movie Titus with Anthony Hopkins? That is a phenomenal movie. I just recently bought it at Columbia house.
In addition I often use the name POTMO as a username. The origin of this other favorite handle is one day in 5th grade I learned the origin of the word googol or whatever that word is meaning a number with a hundred zero's. Not wanting to be outdone and to make a joke I blurted out that POTMO was the answer to evreything. It has been a running joke the rest of my life. During tests I would think outloud mock debating outloud and of course when I didnt know an answer I just exlaimed and then wrote POTMO and shook my head in approval as everyone laughed. The answer to everything I didnt know since fifth grade is POTMO. I went as far as writing in a letter E on multiple choice tests and filling it in. The choice of course being POTMO just for giggles when the tests came back. Its just a spur of the moment word I made up.

Anyway, I get the crash part, what about the 'fourit'? Was that a play on *fryit*?

The 'fourit' is a play on 'it4'. 'It' stands for any computer I touch, and the '4' stands for the approximate number of computers I crashed when I came up the the screen name. I'm *complicated*.
Curmudgeon
Jun 24 2004, 03:28 PM
Growing up in Grand Rapids, I used to read a regular newspaper column by "The Old Curmudgeon," a staff writer for the Grand Rapids Press who always included something in his column that he had overheard on the Cherry Street bus.
Out of curiosity, I looked the definition up at a cery young age. The Yahoo link to the American Heritage Dictionary defines Curmudgeon as:
QUOTE
An ill-tempered person full of resentment and stubborn notions.
Other dictionaries generally attribute connotations of old age and grouchiness as well.
For most of my life, I have viewed the phrase "Good Morning" as a challenge and an oxymoron.
"It takes more muscles to frown than to smile." usually prompts me to remark that I can use the exercise.
When my children say, "I have a question." I have always told them, "As a parent, I have an answer for every question. Occasionally, I even have the correct answer."
Curmudgeon is in short, a goal for me to aim at; becoming a more pleasant person to be around that what I have been for most of my life.

Voila: Amlord.

Robin is my first name and....well....you see I come from Scotland.
Hmm. Its pretty rubbish isn't it. I think I explained before on the thread Amlord mentioned that its because I thought there would be a very small international community here.
Actually, I'll just change my avatar to Willie from the Simpsons some time soon.

DaffyGrl
Jun 24 2004, 09:25 PM
From the official Looney Tunes site, a much better description of Daffy than mine:
QUOTE
As his personality gained depth at the hands of Warner Bros. cartoons' directors, the little black duck became more self-analytical, competitive, peevish, paranoid, and neurotic. Eventually, Daffy found himself more and more at the mercy of a universe that seemed to favor everyone but him. So why do audiences love him? Despite his failures, Daffy, like the Greek hero Sisyphus, is a victim of injustice who continuously protests. And it's his refusal to surrender his will to the whims of the conspiring universe that makes him heroic. How could one not feel sorry for an ill-equipped duck with Daffy's voice that just can't seem to get a break? At least Daffy aims high. And when he fails, he resets the bar . . . even higher.
WB Titus, you can find the whole text to Rabbit Season (they call it Rabbit Fire-I've never heard that), with some sound files
here. Oh, and I about laughed myself silly at your Willy quote - too funny! And thanks for posting the history of Titus...though a more depressing story you'd be hard pressed to find!

AHH MY USER NAME.
A most interesting story that requires many Guiness to get through.
I am a 1970 SuperSport Model Christopher with the best and most advanced options avalible. Constantly upgraded to offer maximum performance and ROI, I have been in constant demand since they destroyed the production plans soon after my design completion.
While there have been many attempts to match the original design there have been few that have even come close to meeting the potential.
Named a national treasure in 1980 I was used as a propaganda peice against the Soviets and contrary to Aquilla and Amlords claims I am the reason the Soviet Union fell and the Wall came down. However I am tired of apologizing for the accident I didn't know it was loaded and was distracted by a pretty Red Head.
Forced into a hermetic lifestyle in the 90's by paparatzzi i have been considering founding my own religion and mean to get around to it one of these days, however the Simpson are on and I just got some fresh beandip.

My user name, taken from the more aptly spelled 'Don't Tread on Me', harkens back to the early days of the U.S. Navy. The rattlesnake is useful in attaining the ominous, threatening tone that our fledgling Navy wanted. When left alone, it is a fairly harmless creature, but when provoked it declares its presence with a rattle of its tail then strikes with a lethal bite. Followed by the phrase, "Don't Tread On Me" we as a nation announced that we are confident, tough, and dangerous- not a bunch to be reckoned with.
I chose it years ago to serve as my online name as it embodies my feelings towards about my country, not only towards foreign aggressors, but to domestic ones as well.

I love the name, and what it symbolizes. And, just for the record, the modern name has returned to the Don't Tread On Me Jack. Why they ever dropped it is beyond me, but Don't Tread On Me is back.

You can ride high atop your pony
I know you won't fall...
'cause the whole thing's phoney.
You can fly swingin from your trapeze
Scaring all the people...

Bella donna...
(be thankful I'm not singing it to you)
That is the song that inspired my on-line name. The correct spelling of it was already taken when I joined a message board a few years back so I modified the spelling.
I like the name for a couple of reasons. First the song was/is a favorite of mine and second, the name has dual meanings. In Italian it means beautiful woman, but it's also a deadly plant. (nice twist)
I've always thought Stevie Nicks was one of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen. I love her voice and think she is an extremely talented song writer.

Andy Mosity....animosity....get it?

Back when I thought I had something important to say, I felt it epitomized my feelings towards certain subjects....nowadays I hold on to it simply to identify myself anonymously on the various boards I frequent. If you've seen Andy Mosity on other discussion boards, odds are it's me..

Mine is fairly straightforward. Just look at my Avatar. Most of you must have seen
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, but if you haven't, you might like it.
I often feel like the innocent Jefferson Smith when I talk politics with some of my more cynical peers. Maybe I'm naive, but I love America, despite its flaws, and I believe we all have a responsibility to work together to make our country better.
I'm surprised that this name wasn't already taken on a board like this. Otherwise I would have had to find another symbol (maybe a hot air balloon

).
