So, where should America's Debate hold it's first convention? (This is really a hypothetical for now.)
Google
Ultimatejoe
Just to throw in my two cents... every US dollar spent in Canada gets about $1.38 Canadian... Toronto would be cheap, and it would be like any U.S. city on clean.
crashfourit
I would go for Hot Springs, AR.
Titus
I'd have to pine for my home state... and Anaheim is a great place to stay and is within good distance of all Southern California attractions.

Vote Anaheim!
lederuvdapac
No New York up there?...come on the greatest city in the world!!!
Andy Mosity
Wow...so many great choices....Tijuana, the happiest place on earth, not just for the drinkin', but I'm fond of the food that can be found the the better parts of Baja California......Vegas, because whatever goes on there, stays there (that's what I've heard, anyways)....Amsterdam, wow, is there anything you can't do there...

Anyways, I picked MOA...simply because I'd be more likely to attend...

Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it - new york, new york
These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it - new york, new york

I wanna wake up in a city, that doesnít sleep
And find I'm king of the hill - top of the heap

These little town blues, are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it - in old new york
If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere
Itís up to you - new york, new york

New york, new york
I want to wake up in a city, that never sleeps
And find I'm a number one, top of the list, king of the hill
A number one

These little town blues, are melting away
I'm gonna make a brand new start of it - in old new york
And if I can make it there, I'm gonna make it anywhere

It up to you - new york new york

New york

I love Toronto! wub.gif

Some reason I never believed "middle of nowhere Nebraska" stood much of a chance.

I voted Vegas (never been there...) but it would be much easier to attend in Toronto. thumbsup.gif

Ok, I gotta mention the irony of Toronto getting the most votes for a convention about AD smile.gif

Vegas is awesome. I was there in April and had a blast.

Doc
doomed_planet
I voted for Mt. Rushmore because it seems the most apropos
for a Political gathering (4 presidents' faces smile.gif biggrin.gif rolleyes.gif whistling.gif would
help with the ambiance).

However, I would be very happy with Vegas or Toronto...
CruisingRam
I voted "Amsterdam"- the irony of holding an "Americas debate" in a European country makes me very happy indeed- and with the number of professed herb lovers here, and artistic/art museum types- everyones needs will be met- with legal pot and the wealth of wonderful art in Amersterdam thumbsup.gif

Though I was a little hurt that no one suggested Anchorage Alaska- possibly one of the best and most exciting tourist destination in America- and one of the few places now giving Vegas and Hawaii a run for it's convention dollars- with us basically having conventions daily up here now LOL wub.gif blush.gif

Hypothetically? Wherever it would facilitate the largest number of A.D. members to be able to attend.
nighttimer
thumbsup.gif Viva Las Vegas! I'd welcome any excuse to go back (and I don't even gamble).

Remind me to tell ya sometime why Don King flew me there... rolleyes.gif
Robin_Scotland
Amsterdam! I hear you get mayonnaise with your fries tongue.gif

That and it is a very short, very cheap flight from Edinburgh airport biggrin.gif
overlandsailor
Not St. Louis? Come on, St. Louis or Kansas City are dead center in the middle of the country, equally accessable by everyone. cool.gif
AuthorMusician
Denver cuz I could actually make it. Every convention seems to end up in Vegas, but aren't the flights cheap?

I'd love to play a coffee house in Amsterdam -- for the ambience of course.

Never been to Toronto but would like to visit.

Nor New York but would like to visit.

Or any of the other places save near the Mall of America (didn't exist back then) and somewhere Nebraska.

What if people in AD did local meet-ups and invited folks along? What if AD did a Webcast? When is AD's anniversary?

We're not the elite, Eeyore. The governor wouldn't declare a state of emergency and deploy the military for mere peasants like us. rolleyes.gif

I wonder which unruly womanizing alcoholic would vote for Tijuana. whistling.gif

Come on now, it has the best exchange rate by far, SoCal is a hop skip and jump away, and whatever happens in Mexico is usually forgotten by the next day.
nebraska29
huh.gif You "Nowhereville, Nebraska" proponents have quite the sense of humor. Here's a site in case you are truly serious about such an idea. I would just roll over and die laughing if you actually passed this off, though I'm not sure if I want you all here! ermm.gif blink.gif blink.gif whistling.gif

Visit Nebraska webpage

We do have....

*the Pioneer Archway(Go see "About Schmidt" if you want to see it)

*Willa Cather museum

*Mari Sandoz ranch and museum

*John Brown's cave in Nebraska City( A cool place to see where a guy who killed slave owners lived smile.gif )
Julian
Where or what is the "Mall of America"?

Actually though I voted for Vegas, and NYC would be my second choice on this list (looking for an excuse to go back to both!) I think Amsterdam or somewhere else in Europe would be better...

Maybe Paris? devil.gif

To be serious for a moment - if this ever were to become a reality, say, next summer, I'd certainly consider coming over to the USA and making it part of my summer holiday.
AuthorMusician
Julian, The Mall of America is Minnesota's latest claim to fame, besides the Mao Clinic in Rochester and the world's largest fake floating loon in Virginia. I'm sure you've heard of the loon.

What can you say about The Mall of America? It's big. It's all over the place. It's got indoor everything, including an amusement park. It's our greatest shrine to consumerism, materialism, chain store capitalism, and just straight out bad taste.

Did I mention it is big? Biggest shopping mall in the world, by goshy!

Also, MN is my home state. Spent over half my life there, 29 years (counting womb time). When all you've really got to brag about is a baseball team that accidentally won a world series and a football team that won, um, nothing so far, yah gotta do something drastic to raise the populace's spirits, especially in the dead of winter.

Thus The Mall of America! By gosh, now that's something pretty darn special, hey?

Never been there, but have visited the Mao Clinic. And of course the loon.

No, but given the opinions expressed by some(probably including myself) maybe the FBI will keep an eye on us down there wink.gif Or better yet, lets invite Ashcroft to do a keynote w00t.gif
Eeyore
Favorite typo fo the thread?

The Mao clinic, I wonder if that is where Tyson went to before he got his tattoo on his arm.

To paraphrase better off dead, Mayo, Mao big difference.

("Tenticles, tenticles, big difference")
Government Mule
Of course I picked Amsterdam. Have been to most of the other places.

Worked in the MOA while attending the U. A capitalistic Mega Store. Bring the kids to Camp Snoopy, and we can meet in Hooters or the Great American Sports Bar. ($1.25 pool games and $4 beers ohmy.gif )

Tiajuana........I am not welcome back. sad.gif

St. Louis or K.C. Not in the summer time. Family is from MO, and my favorite uncle is VP of Sales for the Rams, but I like to feel comfortable, and the midwest in the summer time is FAR from that. Great people though OLS!!!! thumbsup.gif

NYC.........wrong side of the Mississippi for me. tongue.gif

Why not some Pacific NW choices? It would be cool for everyone on the "Right" side of the map to take the Oregon Trail to the convention. Just a thought. flowers.gif
Beladonna
I voted Las Vegas, for many reasons, most of which I'll keep to myself. zipped.gif wink2.gif
DaffyGrl
I voted Toronto, cuz I've never been to Canada and would love to go. As for a central place for all AD'rs, that'd be tough, since we have posters in Scotland, the UK and Denmark (that I remember off the top of my head). I guess that would be somewhere out in the Atlantic Ocean...there aren't even any islands that would be good midway points! Does Greenland count? laugh.gif laugh.gif

Nebraska29, isn't the geographic center of the US in Nebraska? Or is it Kansas? hmmm.gif
Hero
How about Portland Oregon eh? Its beautiful up here and political gathering friendly

edited to add
And if we do, we have to split into Liberal vs. Conservative groups, armed with plastic bats, play America the Beautiful in the background and have an all out Braveheart style brawl... or just stick to cake, punch, and debate.
Juber3
I voted Toronto it is only about 2hrs from my house (north)
Fife and Drum
Los Wages

Cheap air fare, group discount on rooms.

Noticed in the thread about great places to vacation in the States that there were a bunch of hikers/campers, maybe Yellowstone?

Or if it becomes and annual even, rotate the site, hit ‘em all!
kimpossible
I think the most obvious place is Denver, CO.

But I guess Id settle for Las Vegas, which I think might be my favorite place in the USA (though I havent visited NYC) and I bet we could get a good deal if there were enough of us going. Thats what great about Vegas. And the guys passing out porn on the streets...

Hmmm, hmmm.gif

Not sure what AD party you are attending but the one I will be attending will have at least a couple of kegs, lots of finger foods and the only debating going on will be which room to slip into to light a doob. smoke.gif
Mrs. Pigpen
Las Vegas would be best for me, obviously smile.gif. But, I like all of those locations.

Why would Denver be obvious?!?

Aside: speaking as a resident of California with relatives in the Denver area, the airfares to/from Denver are ridiculous!
unabomber
I say denver, but only because I'm stuck in colorado. I would have to get permission to leave the state being on probation.

also, my mom lives in arvada, a suburb of D-town, so I wouldn't need to find lodging tongue.gif

honestly, if I could, I'd pick toronto. as UJ said, our money would go much futrther there.
Cube Jockey
I voted Vegas because out of all the cities it is probably the easiest and cheapest to get to. No matter where you are in the country there is probably a cheap (and likely direct) flight to Vegas.

Now never having been to Vegas personally, I don't know what there is to do besides gambling, but logistically it seems like it would be easiest.
Wertz
No "Other", Joe?? Of the choices offered, I opted for Vegas - at least that way, Mrs. P would be there for sure. wub.gif

But no Savannah - birthplace of America's Debate? No Washington, DC, capital of America? No New York City, capital of the world??

p.s. - Great to see you around, kimpossible! heart.gif
kimpossible
Denver being the most obvious choice because I live here, along with at least one other member (Cyan) and there are several other members that live in CO.

But its mostly because I live here.

Hey Wertz, finally back in a semi permenant way.
TennesseeLeftWinger
I voted for Middle of Nowhere, Nebraska. It's a halfway central location, and with a name like that how could I resist? tongue.gif

I know that I for one would like to see all of those places. It is regretable that I wasn't able to make it out to Savannah for a weekend when I was working in Atlanta for a few months.
Cyan
I vote for Savannah, because I have a fascination with the south that was nurtured by reading too much southern gothic literature. wink2.gif

If we can't do it there, then I'm voting for Toronto. flowers.gif
Ultimatejoe
I can't believe my home town is being beaten out by Sin City. Did I mention how much cheaper it would be for flyers up here...
mpfeif101
Not San Diego tongue.gif Beaches and great weather.
overlandsailor
Although I would not be able to attend, I do think the Birthplace of AD would be a good place to hold such a gathering. Plus, we could push of all the organizing on our local leadership there. They are Administrators after all cool.gif
Jaime
So it looks like Vegas is winning. Should we work on booking a group rate at the Aladdin?!? w00t.gif tongue.gif

Edited to add: Toronto is SO out: Toronto's Smoking Ban Begins 06/01/04
Dontreadonme
I would cast a vote for Savannah, the birthplace of AD. It's a great little burg to visit...and it's close to me.
But then again....what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. devil.gif
