cogito ergo sum

Here is an interesting question:
Can man improve?
Now, to set the parameters of the question.
By "improve" I mean can man make peace on a world wide scale, can man make arts, sciences and learning a priority, can man feed himself without want, can man end pettiness, hatred and violence? You know, ALL the utopian ideas that is the stuff of dreamers, musicians and poets?
Is it possible?
I say no. Man is a low brow, evil, mean spirited, violent, self centered ignoramus. It is our base nature. The essence of man is selfishness. We CAN learn to get past it on individual levels, but we will never be rid of it as a species. We will never "advance" to the "next level". There IS no next level on this earth. We are AT the next level! And it is the last level.
This, however, is no excuse for not bothering to strive for a better comportment, a better etiquette and a better society. We can always strive to better ourselves and it is the most sublime thing man can do.(As they say, the unexamined life is a wasted one)
So, what say you Ponderers?
Can man improve?
