Always wanted to use a pseudonym and write pulp fiction adventure stories about wimpy accountants who get transformed into strapping heros ala Edgar Rice Burroughs (Tarzan, Mars, many others).
Or motorcycle pulp fiction (Wild Ones, Hells Angels on Wheels, etc.).
Let's see, Eddie Malt Beverage? Bore Stroker? Maybe just a code number like Seventy-Four (cubic inches, what the old Harleys use to displace). Also like Forrest Rhodes.
Esther, the artist formerly known as Madonna, could be trying to boost her commercial value with the change. Or it might be a way to work contract legalities as (unpronouncable symbol) formerly known as Prince did. Or she might be genuinely interested in the cabala stuff. If so, she might take a clue from Cat Stevens:
Stevens was a lot more interesting when he had more questions than answers.
Meanwhile, I'm okay with my name the way it is. One of my brothers got stuck with Rolph. I thought it was cool, but he hated it.

Found this interesting, because that is my last name, spelled the same way.
I realize that you are talking first name though.
About Madonna, personally don't care if she changes her name a hundred times. Like some on her songs, but that is about it.
Haven't really ever wanted to change my first name, as it is one that isn't heard often, but wouldn't mind changing my middle. Oh forget it, had it so long now I'm use to it.
