I pulled the following quotes from the Linda Ronstadt thread (
http://www.americasdebate.com/forums/index...topic=7274&st=0 ) by those who are either declared republican or conservative. I've heard the argument of "indulgence" from certain segments of the population that goes along the lines of "the rest of you should INDULGE those of us who want to say a prayer at the beginning, or during a non-religous public event", such as a sporting event or concert. Following the logic of the quotes listed, that the event in question (this concert) was not a political event or gathering,
I'd like to know how, and if, those who made the quotes, feel about people who wish to turn any public gathering they can into a religous observance. And what would they consider the appropriate reaction for those who do not wish to partake. And should the venue be required to give refunds for those who are offend and wish to leave (providing that it is at the beginning of the event)? Additional input from those who are not quoted is also encouraged.
QUOTE
“These were patrons to a show who disagreed with her viewpoint and were not there to indulge in politics.”
“Well, people at the casino paid for singing, not for some political opinions from a celebrity.”
From the spokeswoman for the Aladin:
"It's about using our venue for political commentary versus being an entertainer. She was hired to entertain, not to preach."
“And Linda, when we go to hear someone sing in Vegas, we'd probably rather not know if you are a leftist.”
“Ronstadt wasn't hired to make political commentary.”
“So, to recap....for Linda (hired to sing)”
“and since they didn't hire her for her political commentary”
“Those who are complaining the loudest ………..are somehow failing to see that some people don't appreciate paying money to hear someone deviate from the venue to make political statements.”
“Yes, indeed..we live in a police state when paying customers and management expect a singer to sing and not offer insults at the audience, her sponsors, and personal political commentary.”
“if I have paid money to them perform, I simply want them to perform. Unless of course, I go to a venue that is widely known for partisan politics, then I get whats coming to me.”
“How dare consumers actually care what these people who, in effect, have them as a captive audience talk about!!”
“businesses are in business, not as a platform for free speech.”
"the fact that they didn't PAY to hear that viewpoint"
"But I also don't want to go and hear political diatribes at a concert."
"For me, and maybe me only, a concert should not be a political rally, unless of course the singer or band is performing at a political rally."
"But if I'm spending my money to hear someone sing(what I believe was advertised as a greatest hits)I sure don't want to hear their political comments. There is a forum for everything, why can't some people understand that. People sure don't want some one getting up preaching a sermon about everyones sins do they? It shouldn't be that hard to understand, it was a concert, not a political forum."
"I'm not going to go to a Toby Keith concert because I don't want to be attending a political rally"
