When women work (a full time career job), kids get neglected. So goes the usual conservative opinion. And I think they're right.

When women don't work, women get relegated to second class citizen, with no power in politics and business. So goes the general feminist view. And I think they're right.

What if men and women worked less hours, say twenty-five per week apiece, and shared equally in the childrearing? What if American public opinion and the officials we elect lowered the maximum work hours gradually so that overtime pay starts at twenty-five hours? That way both parents can work in careers and the children will get parental care.

Would that solve the problem?

Could it be done?

The business world isn't going to pay benefits on a 25 hour week. They won't want to train 2 people for one job. They are trying to avoid paying overtime.
Best option, at least it worked for us, is for one of the spouses to be the full time parent while the kids are young. Once they are in school full time, it is much easier for both parents to work.
