But if the truth be known smoke.gif drumroll.gif I turned 64 last September. So, I don't know if that makes me the oldest rolleyes.gif

We had this same poll started back in December 2002 and it lasted until today, when I closed it.

I thought it was time to get a fresh perspective on everyone's ages.  If you would be so kind, please share your age with us. flowers.gif

Being a lady rolleyes.gif I will only say that I have been eligible to vote for almost two decades now, and have used that right, privilege, and obligation on every possible occasion.

Hmm

26.

Not sure what that means really. Spent most of my life living in Edinburgh....so have become habituated to rain and fog.

Have recently moved to London and using the transport system certainly ages you...

Ha!....hardly! biggrin.gif

Dirt is my grandchild! (how does that saying go...older than dirt, and twice as dusty? ... wait, that puts me into the 'cowboy' category, doesn't it? w00t.gif Oh, well, once a Montanan, always a Montanan, I guess....living in Texas probably hasn't helped any, either).

Actually, I'm only 41. So, I'm with Wertz....bad timing to answer this right after I bump up a category sad.gif . Don't know about any of the other 'old-timers' here, but age never bothered me at all...til I hit 40. All of a sudden, it was impossible to not realize I wasn't a young kid anymore. <sigh> ... that might explain my playing rugby this year!

For all you youngsters out there (and, gosh, there's a lot of you! ohmy.gif )....old age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm every single time tongue.gif

Yeah, yeah i know this topic hasn't been touched for several months but if there is anyone that noticed this (probably in the 'new posts' section) i could use a little help. This casual conversation seemed to be the best place to ask my question considering i have no ability to bring up topics and cannot reply to topics off subject and the chat is empty 99% of the time. I am 15 and probably the youngest here so coicidently i could use a little help. If anyone would like to give me a bit of advice, explanations, or just a reply i would gladly appreciate it. I love debating and couldn't do it without you guys. mrsparkle.gif
Aquilla
Hi, Monk. Nice to meet you. smile.gif

There are quite a few people here who are in your general age group I think so I wouldn't let that deter you at all. What I would advise you do is read through some of the threads that interest you and kind of get an idea of how this forum works and the kinds of things that are expected from participants. You should definitely check in the Rules area and the Survival Guide is helpful as well. You can go to them with the underlined links I provided or click on the Rules thing at the top of the page. After that, I'd just read through some of the posts here from people and if something interests you, jump in. Stay on topic by answering the question posed for debate and add your thoughts to the subject and you'll do just fine. thumbsup.gif

Thanks aquilla for the heads up. I have already have had 2 previous posts but i feel out of my league. I'm sorry to bother you again, is there anyway to get good fast or is experience the only way to get good at debate?

Heh... can of worms here. wink.gif

Feel free to start a topic in Comments & Suggestions (which you can do) about how to "get good fast" at debate, or how to improve your debating skills or debate in general. I'm willing to bet that our members will have some good tips and pointers.

My tip: The best way to improve at debating is to read and participate in debates. Practice makes perfect, and while there is no "perfect" in debate, practice does make you a better debater. Pick an issue you really like, read as much about it as you can tolerate, and then jump in. smile.gif

Welcome to AD, Monk, I am 14 and although I am far from good at debating I do think I have a decent understanding of how to get good at it. First rule: Don't be afraid to ask other members for help or advice. Most of them (if not all) are more than willing to help you out. Rule 2: if you've got a question or need some info to support your view, google it. Google has helped me for several of my posts. But like I said I am not all that good at this. Go ahead and fish around for some topic you are interested in, find someone that supports your views and start to talk to them. That is the best way to find a good friend on this site. Good luck and have fun.

I don't know if you consider 26 a youngster or not Hobbes. But in my years, I have managed to pick up on one thing: Those older than me who think they have something to teach me usually do, but the lesson is almost always counter to what they think it is! biggrin.gif

I'm 27 going on 47 as my wife says...!!! smile.gif I don't think that 27 is too old to fall out of grace with smoky bars, loud noises, or crawling in the door as the sun comes up...

Fifty-four going past the double-nickle in June, and every dang year of it has been interesting, if not so great some of the time. Poddy training was a real drag. Unemployment sucks.

I really don't feel old so much as in need of repair, like my Jeep that is now over 100,000 miles. It creaks and groans; I creak and groan. It has a hard time starting once in a while; I have a hard time starting more often than not. It still pulls up an icy hill; I've given that up for Lent.

When you formulate your argument, think of counter arguments that can be used against you. This will help you formulate a more solid opinion that is harder to debate against because you have already considered what might be said against your opinion when making your argument. Also make sure the information in your post is accurate so normally if you do a little bit of research on the web to ensure your statements are accurate (if you are unsure about something) it will help your argument and credibility greatly. If you get caught posting something false or innacurrate try not to dig yourself in a deeper hole, we all make mistakes.

Here's a list of Logical Fallacies to stay away from when debating.
