For those of you who have not yet seen it, there is a new magazine called The American Conservative, edited by Pat Buchanan and Taki Theodoracopulos, which is excellent. If the conservatives in the Republican Party were more like the contributors to this magazine, I'd have to seriously consider adopting a party affiliation. Fortunately (for me), there's small chance of that happening.

Their online presence can be found here - but they tend to only reproduce a few of their articles. The American Conservative is a biweekly which sells for around $4 - and it is well worth the price, regardless of your affiliation or political persuasion. In my opinion, it's the next best periodical to The Nation - coming from me, that is very high praise.

<rubs eyes> Wertz ... endorsing Pat Buchanan? I'll definitely check it out if even Wertz can endorse a conservative magazine.

If you can ignore most of his positions on social issues, Buchanan can be reasonably sound - especially on foreign policy (even when I disagree with him). If nothing else, he sees right through the dangerous Bush regime. Frankly, I'd much rather see Buchanan in the White House than Dubya. Then again, I'd rather see Hugo the Dancing Bear in the White House than Dubya.

Apart from that, Buchanan, like Taki, generally only contributes a short editorial column - but they have a wealth of very good writers, mostly "old school" conservatives who reject much of the neoconservative nonsense which has been wrecking the Republican Party for decades now. I'd say you may like it, OT.

Am I safe in assuming that in NO WAY references our member hugo? wink2.gif Or is that one of your "lofty" references laugh.gif ?

Yikes! One has to watch every step around here. Hugo the Dancing Bear is a toy, for God's sake! I had no idea it would be as obscure as Aristophanes - I promise!

In case I should ever make reference to any of the following in the future: The Human Genome Organization is sometimes called HUGO, Hugo Boss is a fashion designer, the Hugo Award is for achievement in science fiction writing, Victor Hugo is a french writer (best known for Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and there's an interactive fiction design system known as Hugo. None of these, to my knowledge, have anything to do with "our member hugo".

And I still contend Hugo the Dancing Bear would make a better president than Dubya.
