IAEA Director General Urges North Korea "Seize Opportunity"

The International Atomic Energy Agency has conducted a press release to encourage North Korea to re-admit the weapons inspectors the organization placed there to prevent North Korea from developing nuclear weapons.

Question:
What should the international community do about North Korea?

Considering that we are still technically in a state of war with DPRK, and considering the number of times that in the past they have violated the cease-fire agreement and killed US servicemen...........

And considering the mindset of its leader (Kim Jung Il used to state that when his father Kim Il Sung died, that 'he would be buried in Seoul within 72 hours", meaning invasion)..........

And considering that the populace is starving while the armed forces eat fairly well, AND they have the money to continue a nuclear weapons program...........

What solution can the world community possibly come up with that will be met honestly and openly by DPRK and implore them to stand down from nuclear armament?

How can we trust them to not use, or export these weapons or the technology to terrorists, given their track record?

I support individual nations controlling their own destiny and defense, but I believe North Korea will try to control much more than that.

I think this last event has shown us we can't trust diplomacy alone in this situation. If they can just kick out inspectors whenever they want...

The UN must enforce there inspections if they are to succeed. Since the UN is not given to subtlety in military action, It seems to me they must confront North Korea directly, now.

Posting my reply from the other thread. Not sure which one will get more play. happy.gif

Not the story but I do about the situation. I am really interested in how this plays out. What can Bush do?

Bush say's Iraq is a bigger threat, that Korea can be handled diplomatically. But how?

He won't negotiate because it's what Clinton did and he would rather die than duplicate Clinton. BUT even if he wanted to negotiate that would be stupid too, since the last time they only lied to us.

So, what is he doing about Korea? What would YOU do?

Perhaps the later is why he won't negotiate tongue.gif

Yes, the world community is short on options.... Perhaps the UN can muster to will to actually do something. I hear the US will be bringing its case there...

Does anyone have a theory on why Bush is having a Clinton diplomat negotiate with the North Korean ambassador in New Mexico this week? Let a Clinton policy maker clean up his own mess? Use someone who understands the complexity of the issues beyond what has been previously absorbed on episodes of MASH?
turnea
Eeyore: Perhaps because the administration feels this particular man is the best person for the job....

what's your point?
Eeyore
No point. That was actually a geniune inquiry.

I am unfamiliar with what you're asking about, could you provide a link?

Never mind I just found one happy.gif

I think the North Koreans better take the Inspectors back or face Sanctions

Also, i think the sanctions will result in a coup attempt on the nutball running North Korea

I think I need a statement of purpose here, more for ranting purposes than anything else. tongue.gif This is not a complaint about off-topic posts, just making a point...

I started this thread in hopes of disscusing the actions the international community should take concerning North Korea. Because most of us are Americans we tend to focus only on the moves and responsibilities of the US...

Wait... I would venture to say there is another reason.
The international community(UN) doesn't really do anything regarding international security unless absolutely driven to it. It is the IAEA which has inspectors in DPRK, about how long do you expect it to take them to refer North Korea's violation to the security council? (hint: too long)

Unless the UN is more agressive in the area of security, peace will not be a resonable option. Peace in the short term can mean dangers in the long term, the Security Council has yet to truely act on that reality without US backing(or forcing...)

The U.N.Security Council does what? It's a very good topic of discussion, turnea. I can ask a "Form Question" and post a reply that will clear a lot of things up.

Question: "What will the U.N. Security Council do about (insert topic)?"

Answer: "It will spout rhetoric. It will discuss options. It will expound upon its opinion. It will talk, talk, talk, till everyone is blue in the face. It will do nothing but wait and see what the Americans will do, then it will form an opinion."

And here we are, only a couple of months late....
