Well, it looks as if O'Reilly has reached a settlement with his accuser:

QUOTE
The New York Daily News, citing unidentified sources, reported that O'Reilly had agreed to pay Mackris anywhere from $2 million to $10 million. Separately, the New York Post said it was believed that O'Reilly paid "multimillions of dollars" to settle the suit.

and...

QUOTE
O'Reilly told his viewers Thursday night, "This matter has caused enormous pain, but I had to protect my family, and I did. All I can say to you is please do not believe everything you hear and read."

Shortly before "Factor" aired, O'Reilly's lawyer Green, issued a statement saying the cases and claims had been withdrawn and all parties agreed there was no wrongdoing by O'Reilly, Mackris or Mackris' lawyer Benedict Morelli.

Questions for debate:

1.)While there is no admittance of guilt, doesn't the payment of millions show that Bill sought to stop the bleeding of what could've been his career?

2.)If you are truly innocent, why would you not stick up for your principles and act in a flip-flop way that you(Bill) feels his political opponents do all the time?

Mrs. Pigpen
I can't imagine how anyone could conclude that O'Reilly won this one.

1.)While there is no admittance of guilt, doesn't the payment of millions show that Bill sought to stop the bleeding of what could've been his career? I doubt that his career was in jeopardy from this. I've heard his ratings improved after the allegations. Now, if she came out with actual taped evidence of these conversations and sent them around the world-wide web, it would likely impact his career and homelife.

2.)If you are truly innocent, why would you not stick up for your principles and act in a flip-flop way that you(Bill) feels his political opponents do all the time? I don't watch O'Reilly, so I'm not certain of what flip/flopping you're speaking of. If he claimed he'd see this through to the end, and never settle, but now he is, that's a flip/flop. If he didn't claim that I don't know what you mean. He obviously wanted this behind him, and thought she had a strong enough case to string this along for a while. A person could be truly innocent AND have embarassing evidence in this regard. One person who worked closely with another could entrap them rather easily, but if the relationship is based on an understood reciprocity of occasionally bawdy conversation, it isn't harassment...which is defined as unwelcome sexual advances.

The end result of this matter is that we know O'Reilly is a pervert. How an individual who touts nothing but morality, family values etc etc blah blah could somehow be considered the winner of this ordeal is beyond me.

I mean look at the facts. Given O'Reilly's television persona he is the exact person who would have took the stand and battled this case out to clear his name...He didnt and the reason is becaue she probably had tapes. O'Reilly bought his way out because he was done. She is now a millionaire and O'Reilly's credibility is smashed when it comes to two of his biggest themes Family Values and Morality.

Yes she absolutely won.
Looms
I null voted, because the very fact that this is an issue makes me fear for the brains of the members of our society. This whole sexual harassment deal is out of control. Why can't someone harass me? I need money too, you know. mad.gif According to the article,
QUOTE
Andrea Mackris, 33, who was a producer on the show, filed a lawsuit against the top-rated TV host Oct. 13, alleging O'Reilly made a series of explicit phone calls to her, advised her to use a vibrator and told her about sexual fantasies involving her.

And? Point being? Ignore him, flip him off, is this really worth between 2 and 10 million dollars? This is something you either laugh off, or ask for an apology over. I don't know if anyone realizes it, but the kind of stuff that people in Europe normally do would get them sued every single day here. Why the hell are we so uptight? Did he lay a finger on her? No? Then she can cry me a river, build a bridge, and get over it. "But...but... it really offended her..."

Hi, you have reached Looms' emotions. They're not in right now because I DON'T CARE!

Andrea, you are 33 years old, you might want to consider growing up, and not throwing a tantrum about everything everyone says to you.

Whether or not it happened is irrelevant. If this went to trial everyone knows how it would end, and who would be guilty until proven innocent. Settling might be an admission of guilt, but it also might be a way of saying "Just shut up already!"

I say nobody won -- O'Reilly lost, and Mackris is a loser.

1.)While there is no admittance of guilt, doesn't the payment of millions show that Bill sought to stop the bleeding of what could've been his career?

The payments do not equal guilt at all. No more so than, say, Michael Jacksons payoffs to the family of the kids he allegedly fondled...ermm..okay bad example...
Of course he did it. No one would cough up that kinda cash if he even thought he had a chance at winning a court case. But dude can talk dirty to me on the phone for a few million if he wants.
2.)If you are truly innocent, why would you not stick up for your principles and act in a flip-flop way that you(Bill) feels his political opponents do all the time?
If he is innocent, then he is a bigger idiot than if he is guilty. He sets himself and every other famous male up for future grief by so willingly paying the piper (so to speak).

The idea to protect women from harrassment in the workplace was indeed an honourable one, but one that has gone too far in some places. I work in a predominantly female workplace with over 4,000 employees. the defintion of 'unwanted sexual' references and contact changes from moment to moment.

Oh it is us..Americans... who have the problem eh?

My friend from Australia went for an interview in Europe. Yes she is a female and so unfortunately in some parts of Europe females get a different kind of interview conducted then their male counterparts. She is a highly trained Engineer who had been working in her field for nearly 20 yrs. She had to answer questions about her private life at home..about how she will cook dinner for her family if they need her to stay late..or how will she juggle caring for her children and husband at home and her demands at work. It is belittling to women..men are not asked these questions and so why should women be?

My sister went for an interview in Europe ..and was told by the manager that he felt women did not belong in this type of work and he just did not think she would be able to handle it. Again my sister is a professional woman..she has devoted her life to her career and some idiot is telling her her vagina somehow defines her more than her qualifications.

My husband's company dissolved and he had to seek work in Europe during the height of the recession. All the want ads went from no preference of language..to must speak German to finally German must be your mother tongue. So being my husband's mother tongue is not German he could not find work.

It took me nearly 5 mo to find a landlord who would rent to me an apt big enough for my family in Europe because all the landlords kept telling me as a foreigner I was less than desirable..that they must keep their foreigner ratio in check or that I was a liability.

We have discrimination laws and protections for individuals in the workplace for a reason. It has nothing to do with being uptight. Perhaps you don't realize how different life is here for you because of it.

Nobody ever wins in suits of this nature. This woman was obviously out for financial gain and not to defame Mr. O'Reilly. If her values and morals were the matter at hand, she'd have settled IN COURT.

I'm really not the biggest O'Reilly fan, but understand how these things can happen. Large amounts of negative publicity, regardless of the nature, are undoubtedly problematic when you have a family. Doubts arise regardless of the outcome. Who would want to subject their family to this mess?

Of course this woman won, but what she won is the question!?!?!?!? She won a large sum of money... but it sure seems that she sold her morality. I have serious doubts about what happened and if Mr. O'Reilly was drawn into these situations. I've had more than one opportunity to tape inappropriate comments by co-workers, but understand that they mean no harm (and it's usually entertaining/flattering).

With that being said... I'm sure regardless of guilt, Mr. O'Reilly's decision had everything to do with protecting his family and little to do with staying out of the limelight. Afterall... his ratings shot UP after the story broke.
