The passé group Orleans is miffed that the Bush campaign chose its song “Still the One” for the president’s appearances on the campaign trail (especially considering the song’s writer, John Hall, and his wife are campaigning for Kerry). They have requested that the GOP quit using the song, but haven’t pursued any legal action.

And I could swear I heard SRV’s “The House is Rockin’” at one of Bush’s appearances too, but I’ll be darned if I can find any mention of it being used officially. I was hoping the family had put the kibosh on them using it. Don't you just hate it when the party you're voting against uses a song you like?

I thought this was hilarious (from a British site)...no wonder Europeans think we're nuts:
QUOTE
An election campaign cry needs to be cool, catchy and cute – but not too so. Which is why Arnold Schwarzenegger's choice of Twisted Sister's We're Not Gonna Take It was pure genius.

<snip> Nice touch. Even nicer is that it was one of 15 "offending" songs Al Gore's wife tried to ban in the 1980s.

Mrs Tipper Gore, along with other worried Washington wives, formed the Parents Music Resource Centre. The campaign called for parental-advisory stickers to be placed on future music releases warning of their violent or offensive content – apparently, it was the Twisted Sister's video, as opposed to the song, that offended the politically great and good. All this led to the use of "Tipper stickers" that still protect us from evil Eminem today.

So a republican body-builder uses a song in his election campaign that had once been condemned by a Democrat vice president's wife. Only in America. Source laugh.gif

So, what would your suggestions have been for appropriate campaign songs for the candidates (let your imagination run wild!)?

My contributions for the Bush campaign: Violence is Golden and Déjà vu all Over Again by John Fogerty or Dare to be Stupid by Weird Al.

And to poke fun at Kerry: Flip, Flop and Fly by the Blues Brothers. cool.gif

For Bush: (Grab your Dylan Box Set)

"It's All over now, Baby Blue" - Dylan "Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you. Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door is standing in the clothes that you once wore. Strike another match, go start anew.... And it's all over now, Baby Blue."

"Masters of War"

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

Complete Masters of War lyrics.

Bananas and Blow - Ween "Sitting in a cabana, living on Bananas and Blow"

"It Hurts Me Too" - the Grateful Dead "You love him a little more, when you ought to love him less. Why pick up behind him and take his best?
'Cause when things go wrong, wrong with you... it hurts me too."

For Kerry:
Revolution - the Beatles "You say you'll change the constitution Well you know, we all want to change your head"

Short People - Randy Newman "Short people got, no reason to live.........They got little hands, Little eyes They walk around Tellin' great big lies They got little noses And tiny little teeth They wear platform shoes On their nasty little feet"

Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffet "Blew out my Flip-Flop, stepped on a pop top"

I am gonna go with themes here:

BOC: Bush: Don't Fear the Reaper; Cheney: White Ninja; Kerry: Flaming Telepathy; Edwards: Dominance & Submission

COWBOY JUNKIES: Bush: Seven Years (cause on the seventh he is shot); Cheney: Hold on to me; Kerry: Something more besides you; Edwards: Something more besides you

JOHN DENVER: Bush: I’d Rather Be A Cowboy; Cheney: The Eagle And The Hawk; Kerry: The Love of Common People; Edwards: Carolina In My Mind (cause he's from the carolinas)

I'll do more later

I was less three years old when western swing band leader Spade Cooley released “Shame on You” in 1945. It topped Billboard’s country charts for nine weeks and charted for a total of 31 weeks. I remember my grandmother playing it on a 78 rpm Victrola as we called them in that day. This would be my message to Bush.

Shame on You

Perhaps British groups best defined Bush, even if they were nearly 40 years premature. The Beatles’ “Nowhere Man” from 1966 or the Kinks’ “A Well Respected Man” from 1965 fit. It’s like John Lennon/Paul McCartney and Ray Davies had Bush sitting for a musical portrait.

Nowhere Man

A Well Respected Man

Kerry and Edwards have both used Chuck Berry’s 1958 “Johnny B. Goode.” I like the raw energy it provides.

Johnny B. Goode

In hopes of a victory tomorrow, I like The Carpenters’ “Top of the World” from 1973. If Kerry wins, he’ll literally be “on top of the world” and his supporters will have put him there.

Top of the World

This song is actually being used by Kerry:
Kerry's set typically includes Springsteen's "No Surrender" and the Sept. 11 anthem "The Rising"; U2's "Beautiful Day" and Petty's "I Won't Back Down"; and ends with Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," a playful tribute to the candidate (and now his running mate, Sen. John Edwards). "What more could you ask for than Chuck Berry?" Sanders asks.(SOURCE)

Awesome thread, Daffy. Thanks for starting it. biggrin.gif

My picks:

For Bush
Hit the Road Jack - Ray Charles and Bravery of Being out of Range -Roger Waters.

For Kerry
Blowing in the Wind - Bob Dylan (too obvious? ermm.gif ) and Love Me I'm a Liberal -Phil Ochs

I also thought a cynical bunch like us ADers deserved a few of our own.

Stuck in the Middle with You -Steve Miller Band - move obviousness. rolleyes.gif

Waiting for the Next Explosion -Jimmy Buffett

Throwing Stones - Grateful Dead
And the politicians are throwing stones
So the kids they dance they shake their bones
Cause it's all too clear we're on our own
Singing ashes, ashes all fall down.

Ship of Fools -Grateful Dead

Oooh, good thread.

Bush is a tough one. How to avoid the obvious?

Actually, when I started writing this post, the following song came on and it is perfect!

Childhood's End by Iron Maiden. Here's a passage I like:

Contaminated waters
Pollution and decay
Just waiting for disease to strike
Oh will we learn someday?

No hope, no life, just pain and fear
No food, no love, no seed
childhood's end

Kerry is a bit tougher. The best I can think of is Stuck in the Middle With You ... well "middle" as far as American politics are concerned.

Runners up:

Bush: Because I got High, Try Honesty, Mama Look a Boo Boo (warning, lyrics are in very poor taste)
Kerry: Maybe I'm Wrong, Should I stay or Should I go?, Try a little Tenderness

For Bush

Hit the Road Jack - Ray Charles

Jamie,

There is a bit of irony here. The Texas Rangers Baseball Team, which Bush owned in part before becoming Governor of Texas, plays "Hit the Road Jack" when an opposing pitcher gets knocked out and a reliever comes in. laugh.gif
Rancid Uncle
For Bush: Road to Nowhere by the Talking Heads
Well we know where we’re goin’
But we don’t know where we’ve been
And we know what we’re knowin’
But we can’t say what we’ve seen
And we’re not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out

For Kerry: Crazy Baldheads by Bob Marley
Build your penitentiary, we build your schools,
Brainwash education to make us the fools.
Hate is your reward for our love,
Telling us of your God above.
We gonna chase those crazy -
Chase those crazy baldheads out of the town!

Either could use Night Of The Thumpasorus Peoples by Parliament because that's a great name.

For Bush: Walk This Way By Aerosmith/Run DMC
Chorus: She told me to
Walk this way!
Talk this way!
(repeat 2X)
(repeat all 2X)
Well just gimme a kiss/some head!
Oooh, a-like this!

For Kerry: You Can't Always Get What You Want by the Rolling Stones
Chorus:
No, you can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I'm glad people are enjoying this thread; I wasn't quite sure. flowers.gif

For Kerry: The Who, "We're Not Gonna Take It"

We're not gonna take it
Never did and never will
We're not gonna take it
Gonna break it, gonna shake it,
Let's forget it better still

Bob Dylan, "The Times, They are a'Changin'"

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

For Bush: Metallica, "Master of Puppets"

Master of puppets i'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, `cause i'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, `cause i'll hear you scream

So, what would your suggestions have been for appropriate campaign songs for the candidates (let your imagination run wild!)?

Hmmm...

Bush/Cheney: "America, F*** Yeah! from the movie "Team America: World Police

"No Easy Way Out by Survivor (from Rocky IV)

Kerry/Edwards: "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham

"Jive Talkin'" by the Bee Gees

"Changes" by David Bowie (there's a subtle poke in that one *wink* *wink*)
Government Mule
a quick addition:

Kerry:
Mama, don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys.
"Let them be doctors and lawyers and such"

(and she/he might have told me to walk this way or talk this way, but I am a human, and don't respect demanding authority. I am my own person and do not need to be told how to talk or walk, and I am proud of that.)

I just got done voting and for some reason ACDC's Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is stuck in my head. blink.gif laugh.gif

Randomly, from my desktop MP3 player, tracks that seem pertinent to the presidential campaign (some for particular candidates - I'll let you choose wink.gif, some just overall impressions, others my own perceptions as an impotent bystanders) include:
Under the Gun, Vision Thing & More - The Sisters of Mercy (bit of everything)
Hysteria, Endlessly - Muse (the entire Buse campaign)
Just Don't Need This - Sugababes (the negative campaigning)
What do you do for Money, Honey? AC/DC - (Bush & Kerry)
Think -Aretha Franklin (suggestion to voters)
You Won't Make Me Die - The Darling Buds (colossally obscure, I know, but I used to know them)
Numb, Sour Times - Portishead (me/general impression)
Bad Fun - The Cult (me)
Big Spender - Shirley Bassey (the money men)
Fool's Gold - The Stone Roses (the money men again)
Just Looking - The Stereophonics (me)
The Payback - James Brown (the Dems?)
Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive - Johnny Mercer (what the candidates should have been doing, IMO)
Born Slippy - Underworld (Bush & Kerry)
Trouble Man - Marvin Gaye (Karl Rove)
Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) - Kenny Rogers (an unkind one for Dubya)
Where is my Mind? - The Pixies (another Dubya-bash)
You Never Can Tell - Chuck Berry (something for the psephologists to remember)
Everybody's Fool - Evanescence (I swear these anti-Bush ones are just coming out in the sort order of my music files. Honest.)
A Rock and a Hard Place - Sisters of Mercy again (the choice before the American voter)

... And I'm only a quarter of the way through my tracks list.

Most of the good ones have been taken by now, but one I find particularly apropos for Bush - Pain by Jimmy Eat World
carlitoswhey
Very quick and late thought as I look at the electoral college map.

"Schism" by Tool.

"I know the pieces fit...I know the pieces fit....I know the pieces fit" then a big loud drum / guitar thing to express the angst.

Party on.

Well, die-hard Bush supporters!
It's time to get out your victory gin and make a toast to another 4 years of blissful ignorance!! thumbsup.gif

WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

If they could add some music to those lyrics we would have the perfect
Bush/Cheney victory song!! zipped.gif

Another four years with this administration. Once the consequences of their policies make themselves known to more Americans on this board, I will be glad to sing "Who's Sorry Now?"

America has made its bed. Now we must all sleep in it.
