There are conflicting studies. That Daling study is particularly chilling. Any woman under 18, with a family history of breast cancer, who is considering an abortion should be made aware of it.

I don't think having an abortion increases a women to have breast cancer. That is totally ridicules. Univerisites come out with these studies that are not fully done. At one time is was thought estrogen causes breast cancer. Now they say no! I am so sick of this. Until the reasearch is totally finshed and Final results are in don't give me speculation. wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

I studied the site, and while the link between abortion and breast cancer may exist, I don't think the intent of the organization is merely to "warn" women and doctors. This group has a pretty obvious political agenda about abortion. In a way it reminds me of the constitutionalist argument for ending social spending. Trying to make a scientific or legal point in order to give an air of legitimacy to a purely political goal.

There are health risks associated with many medical procedures, as well as for many voluntary activities. I don't have any problem with the knowledge of a link being out there and available. And practitioners of medical procedures should warn patients about associated risks - they often don't. But, and I could be wrong, I feel like this group is just trying to outlaw abortions by finding a new angle.

Breast cancer is number one in new cancer cases each year among women. It is also the second highest cancer related death among women (after lung cancer). Lots of money and effort is being put into fighting yet. You would think that if something can be shown to decrease it, it would be made known to the public. But, very few people discuss the fact that having an abortion increases the odds of breast cancer.

Why does an abortion increase the odds of breast cancer?

"A woman's breast is especially sensitive to carcinogenic (i.e., cancer producing) influence before she delivers her first child. When a woman becomes pregnant, a number of hormone levels increase dramatically in her body. Three especially notable ones are estradiol, progesterone (i.e., the female sexual hormones), and B-hCG (Beta-human Chorionic Gonadotropin). All of these hormones, especially the latter, serve to stimulate immature breast cells to mature into fully differentiated cells [145A]. If this process gets artificially interrupted, by way of an induced abortion, the hormone levels drop dramatically thereby suspending the natural process of maturation of many of the woman's breast cells. This is referred to as a "hormonal blow" by researchers. These cells are now "vulnerable" to carcinogens since they were left "in limbo": that is, they started the maturation process, but were never able to complete it. [Cells that have fully matured are less vulnerable to carcinogens than cells that are in the process of maturation]."

Seems to make sense to me.

Also, here's an interesting graph of breast cancer incident rates before and after 1973.
