Danya, I don't mean to be critical on such a fun board, but if you are worried about your cats being pregnant, you really ought to spay and neuter. There is a huge over population problem in this country. I hope all is well with your kitties.

NyArtist26

I agree and I take total responsibilty for the problem. I had good intentions...we have a feline foundation that does low cost spays and neuters...they have a waiting list that was unusually long (I was told at least 3 months) and I put my name on the list when they were just old enough to be fixed.

Turns out they finally called three months later and said I should make other arrangments because they were still too full.

I still have not made an appointment...maybe I'll do that on my lunch hour today. blush.gif

NyArtist26
I may not agree with you on alot, but I admire the fact that you are willing to admit responsibility for your mistakes. Did your kitties turn out to be preggers?
Danya
Only one did. Thank goodness. wink2.gif

I am very much a cat person. Here are our current companions.

October (also known as Furbelow) is a small short-haired black female. She loves to eat things like cheese and ice cream, puurs and meows a lot, and has stayed kitten-sized even though she is now a senior citizen.

Lawrence (also known as Wheatstone) is a medium short-haired female with golden/gray ticked fur. She is possibly at least part Abbysianian. She likes cheese as well. She tends to be quiet and stay by herself.

Zyepha is a medium gray and white splotched longhaired female. She can be a little cranky, but she is sweet if you treat her nicely. She is the only cat who has not learned to use the cat door.

Nepomuk is a large short-haired orange tabby male who just showed up one day. He acts like a big kitten and can be very playful.

Pettifog is a medium short-haired gray tabby male who loves attention. He will run up to you if you pet another cat.

Obsidian is a medium long-haired black male who has a semi-Persian face. He is the brother of Pettifog, although they look quite different.

Trillium is a medium short-haired black female who is the sister of Pettifog and Obsidian. She is quite shy.

Kylix is a small short-haired gray tabby female with white feet. She is very friendly.

Bagatelle is the niece of Kylix, although they look a lot alike, as if they were sisters. The main difference is that Bagatelle's front right leg is white, instead of just the feet. Her personality is similar to that of Kylix.

We recently had our newest cat, Regalon, disappear. It has been several days, and she was a very "stay-at-home" type, so I can only assume she is dead. She was a small short-haired orange and white tortiseshell female. She was very sweet.

We always spay or neuter each cat as soon as possible. None of the females have ever been pregnant. As far as I know, the males have not fathered any children.
AJE
I have had about everything you can think of, a llama, a Texas longhorn cow, over 70 goats, boa constrictors, Burmese pythons (14’ long), rabbits, chickens, horses including miniature horses, cockatiels, a cockatoo, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, fresh water aquarium with Oscars, salt water aquarium with live-rock and lots of fish, ferrets, a raccoon, dogs, and cats. I can tell you that feeding time got very busy!

I am currently down to 4 cats 2 inside Samantha and Tuco and 2 outside Tac and Tabitha, one dog a Catahoula hound Ringo, one Nubian goat Jack, two freshwater aquariums one with pacu and Oscars and one with African cichlids haven’t named the fish,….. yet!.

I am lucky I live in the country because I really enjoy my animals.
Momof3
We have a Mutt named Poppy. She just had her 10th b-day. Jaime brought her home for her sister's b-day. Got her on a farm. We couldn't decide on a name for her. So we kept calling her Puppy. Finally decided on Poppy thinking it sounded kind of like Puppy and she would learn her name pretty quick.
Well Jaime for whatever reason decided to call her Ralphie. I called her Gerties. She is also called at times Popster.
When you call her one of the four names she will not come to you. Just rolls on her back wags her tail and wants belly rub.
Can't understand where we went wrong. whistling.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif whistling.gif

Victoria: Yikes - and I thought we were bad. At one stage, our household of four was harboring eighteen cats - but that was only until a couple overlapping litters were unloaded and the appropriate culprits spayed and neutered. We've now settled into four indoor cats and four outdoor cats. And we're down to one dog now (we had a bereavement a few weeks back) - though she is large and relentlessly enthusiastic about human contact.

AJE: Quite a menagerie! Llamas are cool - a friend of mine at work has a couple. But how did you manage to live with the cockatiels? We had a couple of them for about a month several years ago and they drove us right around the twist - they are the noisiest damned things that ever existed. We finally managed to unload them on an acquaintance that we didn't particularly care for very much. whistling.gif

Mom: I'd stick with Gerties or Ralphie. "Poppy" is too evocative of Bush the Elder - and I wouldn't wish such a comparison on a dog! ohmy.gif biggrin.gif ohmy.gif
AJE
We started with one volunteer cockatiel. I was out in my back yard, after a thundershower and heard a strange noise. I looked up in a near by tree and low and behold there was a cockatiel. I whistled to it a couple of times and held my arm up and it flew down and landed on my arm, cockatiel #1.

We searched around the neighborhood and put up flyers at local stores but no one ever claimed him. After that kind of first meeting we had to keep him. Of course he was lonely without a mate, so incomes noisy bird # 2.

I will have to agree with you that is the noisiest thing I have ever had, except for geese that only lasted a week or guineas. I was divorced about a year ago, and as much as I hated it I let her take the little darlings with her. whistling.gif

Speaking of Llamas, have you ever seen a Llama spit, it is so nasty. We had ours in with the goats and when the goats would get too close to his food he would get real mad and finally he would spit on the goat, it was so nasty! sour.gif He had great aim, he could hit them from 20' away, right in their face. So as you can imagine we were very nice to MR. Llama! biggrin.gif

And, as of yesterday, our household now has a sugar glider, Zip. If you've never seen one of these things, they are adorable: tiny little marsupials, similar to flying squirrels, but with the markings of a chipmunk and big bright eyes - very affectionate.
Cyan
Sugar gliders are so cool, Wertz. smile.gif I was considering getting one at one time, but I've heard that they require a lot of attention because of their social needs, and that they get really attached to their owners. I just don't have the time and attention to devote, particularlly since I have two pugs who require loads of attention. You should post a pic sometime so that I can live vicariously. Sugar gliders are so cute. smile.gif

I have a 3 y/o cat Rosie, who was once taking a nap in my car and thats how I got her. She came all the way from Houston to Alaska with me and is cool as can be.

I just got a Yellow lab/husky mix puppy, Luna. It was a full moon when I named her. She is a freakin handful, too smart and mischevious. I forgot what it was to have to train and deal with a puppy. Plus the cost! She grows inches and pounds per week. I hear its 2 years training for labs. Wish me luck I dont strangle her first!
Wertz
I mentioned elsewhere that I'm moving, so the herd with which I've been living is being somewhat culled. I will now be living with a somewhat more manageable three cats (Subaru, Toyota and Shadowcat - a.k.a. Sombra). I will miss Bailey, my soon-to-be-former housemates' golden retriever - and the dear little sugar glider (I may have to get one of my own) - but I can't say I'm all that upset about leaving another clowder of cats behind...

I wanted to give an update...I finally got my Chihuahua. Not the one in the pic but he looks like him (only he has short hair and bigger ears). He's been with us for a month now.

So, now that Cisco has arrived I'm complete. He's a terrible brat and I love him to pieces. happy.gif

I usually just read the more serious posts, mainly as help for my debate homework, but i decided to check out what was going on over here. And I decided that I would mention my pets. I have two ducks, and a guinea pig. The guinea pig is black, and named Licorice. The first duck is named Lucy. She is a Pekin duck, one of the white ones with the yellow bills and feet. The other is Olive, a young runner duck. She is black, and looks like a penguin because she stands upright, instead of more horizontal like most other ducks. Also, instead of waddling she runs. I love all my pets...they are adorable.

I have a two year old black lab\dalmation named Annabel, a four year old long haired black cat named Gabriel and a 3 month old black lab\chow mix named Piercy! biggrin.gif

Its a Chausiecat

They're exotic crossbreeds between a jungle cat and large (in the scheme of things) domestic shorthair cats.

The idea of a 20-30+ pound cat, no fat, appeals to me, especially since I love cats anyway.

(oh, and I mispelled it previously, only one "s") sad.gif
Mike
WOW! These look like some cool cats.

Here's what I learned from this site:

These cats are typically 12 to 24 pounds, quite a big cat. Our fattest cat got up to about 22 pounds or so, but is now back down to probably about 17 or so (after two years of dieting). He's still a big cat. I couldn't imagine having a 24 pound cat! But, the author of that page says they had a 34 pound male. Now that is a BIG cat...

In some locations, you are required to have a permit to own a Chausie.

And, the price: $400-$1500 bucks each!

Still, very cool though.

Mike
Wertz
Excellent! I am now using chausies as a threat to my cats: "If you don't get off my lap while I'm trying to eat cereal, I'm gonna get a chausie cat!" and "You want me to bring a chausie into your territory? Keep playing with those venetian blinds!" Heh-heh-heh - they've had to start working overtime on their "innocent" looks...

We have 4 pets - 2 cats, 2 dogs. One cat, Ruthie is 7 years old and pretty large, like around 17 pounds and she was the one that had the problem with Advantage. (She is fine now). The other one, Jenny is 19 and a little grumpy in her old age, but still pretty sprey. We also have a Golden Retriever named Abu who is 10 years old and looks like a California Brown Bear. He eats like one too and weighs well over 100 pounds. Our other dog is Angel and she's a 5 year old white Pekingese. I'll see if I can put together a small colage of them and post it here.

In the meantime, one thing I do want to point out is that all of our pets are so-called "rescue animals", we didn't purchase any of them from a breeder or a pet store. My better half got Jenny in a shelter when she lived in Colorado, Ruthie showed up at the TV station she worked in in Washington DC one night. Abu came to me from a shelter in Los Angeles, and we got Angel from a woman in Beverly Hills who rescues Pekes in need of a good home. (She has 10 of them herself)

It is incredible and sad that so many good pets are out there in need of a home and I would encourage people here who are looking for a pet to check with the shelters and rescue places first. For one, it will save you a ton of money. Abu is a pure bred Golden Retriever and he was mine for a $25 fee. At a pet store, he would easily have cost well over $500. Angel is a pure bred Pekingese, and all-white which is really rare. From a breeder she would have likely gone for well over $1000, maybe close to $2000, but all it cost us was a $100 donation to a pet rescue shelter in Beverly Hills. The best thing though is that we have some wonderful pets and they have a wonderful home where they are spoiled rotten. Sometimes I wonder who adopted who. smile.gif

I have a beautiful, gorgeous, brilliant dalmatian/black lab mix named Annabel Lee, and a black lab/chow puppy named Percy. We also have a black cat named Gabriel. And they are all loved and adored and spoiled rotten. biggrin.gif

I have 2 Italian Greyhounds and 1 grey tabby cat. I had 2 but she got run over crying.gif . I also have 1 grey goldfish.
Ataal
I have six cats. Two of them are over 22lbs. My biggest one is 26lbs(all muscle) and is a gray tabby/siamese mix. He has the gray stripes on his sides, feet, and head, but has the dark tail and blue eyes of a siamese. He loves cats but will attack any dog, no matter how large, on sight. He's never lost a fight yet, but I keep him indoors nowadays to keep his record the way it is and to prevent any more vet bills. Sliced doggy noses are expensive. sad.gif

does anyone else have a cat that sleeps sprawed out on their back?mine does it all the time, and the kittens my other cat had have picked up on it. especially the boy kitten.(who follows me everywhere. too bad I have to get rid of him crying.gif crying.gif ) it's funny as heck. (is he "double hockey sticks" considered profanity here?)

Had 2 cats, one a full time lover-boy-lap-cat, the other was part time lap sitter and occasional demon-from-hell. They belonged to the kids, they left and stuck us with their critters, and eventually I found a home for the lap-cat. The other had to be put down, he got so mean in his later years that the only alternative was a lobotomy.
Even though he "assigned" me as his human when the kids left, and for the most part acted as though he loved me, I was almost always the one who got attacked.
Throwing him in the pool immediately after the attack would calm him down for about 8-10 months, then he would need another dip.
We have grandkids now, no time for pets. sleep.gif

Both of my male cats lay on their backs, legs spread wide. Funniest dang thing.

After her recent treatment for pyometra, I now have the world's most expensive black mouth cur.
Wertz
Probably about as expensive as a pixie-bob tom with a collapsed lung, Hugo. sad.gif money.gif money.gif money.gif

For the record, my household now has a fourth cat: a black domestic shorthair kitten called Little B, belonging to my housemate. The previous feline residents are not taking this arrival all that well, but after three days of hisses and growls, Subaru and ShadowCat are starting to come around. The formerly pretty placid Toyota, though, remains totally neurotic, hissing and starting at anything that moves or makes a sound. rolleyes.gif

Subaru sometimes lounges on his back, unabomber, but more often sprawls with his front and back legs stretched out to their full extent (making him over 30" long from toe to toe), which has earned him the nickname "Stretchbeast". Toyota, a.k.a. "Shoemonster", prefers curling up between a pair of shoes with her chin resting on one of them. She also likes to sharpen her claws on them - but only if they're genuine leather and fairly new. dry.gif

::shrieks with glee:: Now this is my kinda topic. w00t.gif Though I don't have very many pets - only one - I LOVE ANIMALS!!!! I have a German Shepard/Chow mix from the pound. Her name is Hunter and she's turning five this November. She looks like a miniature German Shepard, only with a fluffy neck. And purplish tongue... I call her my fifty pound puppy <3

We recently lost a cat to, we think, a mountain lion passing through. So now there's two little black kittens underfoot, Midnight and Bruno, brother and sister.

I'm missing Silver, the feral that we took on about five years ago. Poor guy. But he had a good home for some of his time.

Midnight is all black and has the spunk and motor. Bruno is the tough guy with white boots. They drive Molly, the remaining adult cat, to distraction. She has hissy fits. Both kittens love to hang near my feet for some reason, little pincushions!

we have a 4 year old, 7lb Yorkie named "Chili." He was given to me as a random gift. I named him after Chili Palmer in "Get Shorty" because he's just confident in a crazy kinda way. His one fetish is to wrestle with himself inside paper grocery bags. likes to pal around with the Rottweilers and Big Dawgs at Dog Beach. yah, he's the man alright. thumbsup.gif he's hot and he knows it. haha.

He's a real problem for the men in my life hmmm.gif as he does not appreciate anyone getting to close to me. But he travels well! Little travel bag under the seat flying 3,000 miles cross country? Chili loves it! He's tuff.

we also have a phish named "missuh fish." He's a red beta and also crazy-tuff. I had to put a top on his tank after he hurled himself out and 4 feet down onto the floor. Luckily someone was there to rescue him.
Rev_DelFuego
I have a pure breed Himalayan Persian. That means shes white and gray long hair with blue eyes and extremely cute, this comes from a guy who still hates cats. She looks like an Ewok from star wars though. I should have some pics of her when I get my scanner by the end of the month.

We have two cat's now.

The first, Footer, is a Maine Coon, large at 20lbs, but not at all fat. We've had him for about 4 years.

The second, Leo, is a Norwegian Forest cat, a little smaller than Footer, but still a big strong, long haired cat.

We just picked up Leo from the Humane society today. He had been abandoned in an apartment here in town when the owner moved. He and Footer are still working on getting aquainted. I'll let you know how it goes....... unsure.gif

NiteGuy,

Heh, the Main Coon is an interesting breed. We had one come by to visit many years ago. He hung around for a couple weeks, then moved on. Only cat I've ever seen who fell off a bed and landed--flat square on his back. How mortifying!

Think he might have had a parasite, but couldn't get him into a transport to the vet.

Kudos for taking on abandoned pets (and to all other members who do so)! thumbsup.gif

Hello pet lovers! biggrin.gif Enjoyed the pictures of your family members! We have a seven year old Lhasa Apso, Teddy Boy that runs a tight ship in this household. He is my 14th dog (throughout these many years) and our second Lhasa Apso...and a SWEETHEART!

Teddy Boy is rather confused today because I gave him an early Christmas present...a pair of Doggles which are sunglasses for dogs. Teddy has been blind since he was four due to a combination of auto-immune disease and Tick Fever, so the Doggles are not for shielding his eyes from the sun, but they are great for protecting his eyes from the wind and sharp objects (twigs, tree bark, bushes, etc.) that we so often encounter during our daily walks. He looks darling in them- they fit perfectly and look so cool on him! The second walk produced better results than the first, so I am sure that within the next few days, he will concentrate more on his walks than trying to remove his new glasses.

I have a 4-month old pug (as of 1/2004) name Jada. She's the greatest.
Robin_Scotland
Firstly, I don't like the idea of 'cat people' and 'dog people'. From my own experience with many cats and dogs, I find that they are actually very alike. Even more bizarre, I would consider my cat to be very loyal and caring, whereas my dog is a selfish son of a bitch (and I wasn't swearing, he really is! I hope, otherwise I want my money back)

So you have probably gathered that I have a dog. He is named Teddy, and is more my Grans dog but we look after him cos she is very elderly. He is a black minature poodle who was supposed to be pedigree, but actually is a mongrel. The woman who sold him to us was in all the papers a few months after we got him and served some kind of sentence in the end. He is 13 years old now, but still very bouncy.

And I also have a cat, a black and white male named Max who is 9 this year. We neutered him at a young age so he is really small, and often gets his arse kicked by other cats in the neighbourhood. I also sort of have another dog. He is my girlfriends family dog, a labrador cross named Rhys. I don't know why he got a Welsh name but there you go. He is also a selfish sod and is 2 years old this month.
