Hey Digital Patriot.
Yeah, I'm still planning on doing the upgrade.
The company that makes the software(IPS) hasn't released it yet. I was confident it would be out by the beginning of the year, but it seems I was wrong (first time ever, really

).
We're running 1.1 Beta 4, and 1.1RC1 and 1.1RC2 are out, but what's the point? There's only minor bug fixes, and I haven't received any complaints lately...
IPS is running RC2 on their board, but they have 1.1 Final running on their demo board, so I'm assuming it'll be coming soon.
I'm not complaining or anything, as they do offer what is probably one of the best forum scripts around, and don't charge you a penny for it.
As for installing from scratch, that actually isn't
necessary. I have upgraded this forum, though, from 1.0 to 1.01 to 1.1beta1, beta2, beta3, and finally beta4. So, this would make for my 7th upgrade over the same DB. The DB isn't the problem, but the source code files are. IPS has a knack for leaving files off the upgrade list, so I am often missing some files. I use a source comparer, but since we have custom skins and a lot of custom hacks I wrote myself on the board, my source files are difficult to compare to the release.
So, I plan on wiping everything in my forum directory except the userimages/graphics and creating a new DB. For some reason, my DB has an extra table in it, so that concerns me a bit. I'll just do a mysqldump of all my data, and then import it into a clean board. That way, I am guaranteed to have a proper DB, and proper source files.
Basically, I'll have to redo the skin, which is no problem. It takes about 6-8 hours or so, and is not really that fun. But, we've been pushing the limits of our bandwidth lately, so I'm going to be removing some of the graphics, like the gradients above the tables. They're not necessary, and take quite a bit of bandwidth when you're talking about 100,000+ downloads a month. I'm also going to come up with a way to make the smilies look correct in both the posts and the posting screen; I'm sick of them looking bad.
I've got the strike-system ready for install, which takes a bit of DB tweaking, so that's yet another reason to do a clean install.
I've also custom-coded all of the stats that are exported to the homepage so they are done SSI. This removes a lot of overhead (like a 50K required php file stuffed with queries). There will be minimal changes as a result of this. I have added some nifty new stats, though...
I'm also working on making the entire site PHP/MySQL driven, with every page being an assemblage of template files. I'm probably about 20% done with development on that, and it will require a complete rebuild of all the pages outside the forum.
So much stuff! It's amazing!
But once it's done, it should be done for a while, and I'll be able to get back to posting.
Enough for now!
Mike
