UN staff to vote on no-confidence motion against Annan
QUOTE
UN staff are expected to make an unprecedented vote of no confidence in Secretary-General Kofi Annan, union sources say, after a series of scandals tainted his term in charge of the world body.
Annan is being plagued with scandals including allowing Saddam Hussein to bribe UN officials and not stopping the genocide of 800,000 people in Rwanda.

Real Questions:
  1. What impact does the UN staff losing faith have on the world?
  2. Should this historical vote prompt UN Ambassadors to call for an investigation of Annan and ultimately the resignation?

Black Helicopter Question:
  1. Was Annan acting under control of other world leaders such as countries that took bribes or profited off of the Rwanda genocide?
  2. Rumor's of Clinton running the UN have been flying especial since's his library opening where Clinton pushed the issues of America's influence on the world, could this be America's attempt to unseat Annan and place Clinton in?

The vote of no confidence was not directed at Annan in particular. In fact they supported Annan.

What impact does the UN staff losing faith have on the world?

None. The only affect it should have is the replacement of top officials that where cited in the no confidence vote.

Should this historical vote prompt UN Ambassadors to call for an investigation of Annan and ultimately the resignation?

Again, it was not against Annan, but it should prompt the resignation of a few top officials. I would hope that the investigation for the oil-for-food scandal would have called for full cooperation, but the UN has declined to release information that has been requested. It's certianly not "the end of the UN".

I dont want to get into the blackhawk helicopter questions, I left my tin-foil hat at Michael Moore's place.

What impact does the UN staff losing faith have on the world?

None. If the UN staff union votes him out, then he must go and be relaced. Annan is just a figure head. He does not dictate policy. His job is only to represent those that do.

If he is found to be guilty of mismanagement, nepotism or corruption, then he ought to be punished, but otherwise he should simply accept the judgement of his peers and act accordingly.

Should this historical vote prompt UN Ambassadors to call for an investigation of Annan and ultimately the resignation?

Yes, certainly to an investigation. I'm not so sure a call for his resignation is necessary. You can't force some one out for no reason other than suspicion. Lets see what an investigation turns up before we unleash the hounds!

Was Annan acting under control of other world leaders such as countries that took bribes or profited off of the Rwanda genocide?

How can any one here at AD know that? Surely it would be the job of any investigation to determine whether or not Annan is guilty of anything and we common folk can hardly presume to pass judgement on the man simply on the basis of his reputation in the media!

Rumor's of Clinton running the UN have been flying especial since's his library opening where Clinton pushed the issues of America's influence on the world, could this be America's attempt to unseat Annan and place Clinton in?

Its possible. Its also equally possible that the Earth will be invaded tomorrow by an intergalactic empire and the UN will cease to exist along side the rest of humanity. Problem solved.

The real question should be, what will it mean if Bill Clinton is ever acccepted as Secretary General? Will it mean more of the same, or will it bring about a new period of respect for the UN in the USA?

What impact does the UN staff losing faith have on the world?

It's an administrative matter. If McDonald's CEO was accused of sexual harrassment, would people stop buying BigMac's? Of course not. Well, the same goes with the UN... no impact on the world whatsoever.

Should this historical vote prompt UN Ambassadors to call for an investigation of Annan and ultimately the resignation?

It's a good question. The UN is an organization of nations that monitors other nations. But who actually controls the monitors?

Was Annan acting under control of other world leaders such as countries that took bribes or profited off of the Rwanda genocide?

Yep, once again it was all France's fault. Annan was a mere puppet of our games, my Republican friend! (ark, ark! laugh.gif ) More seriously, maybe there's an African connection, but only a proper internal inquiry will reveal the truth.

Rumor's of Clinton running the UN have been flying especial since's his library opening where Clinton pushed the issues of America's influence on the world, could this be America's attempt to unseat Annan and place Clinton in?

I thought Chirac was to replace Annan. I guess we both must have been given false information. cool.gif

Where did you hear there was an African connection? I havent heard much about any African connections. Certianly Russian connections, but I dont recall any going to Putin. Alot of the big oil whighs oppose Putin.

Charles Duelfer's group put on the public record the name of Charles Pasqua, France's former interior minister and now a senator. Pasqua denied all to the BBC and fingered ex-associates: "maybe other former ministers are involved."

The former French ambassador to the U.N., Jean-Bernard Mérimée, is listed as receiving vouchers for 11 million barrels of oil from Saddam, the proceeds from which would beat a diplomat's pay. Another of President Jacques Chirac's friends receiving Saddam's U.N. largesse is Patrick Maugein, "whom the Iraqis considered a conduit to Chirac," according to the report.

French diplomat's where knee deep in it including some close to Chirac.

Im surprised this isnt blowing up in France. People usually eat up stories about corrupt diplomats. At least here in the US they do. whistling.gif

Perhaps the opposition to the war is helping it keep its low profile.

There's also some inquiries into one of Annan's relatives.

1. After reading the thread, I thought there were charges against Annan regarding Rwanda. And since Rwanda is located in Africa, I used the words "African connection".

2. It's funny... I make an ironical joke and you fall right for it! The elements you give have been reported in three different threads already. I read them and replied then :

-> Chirac is untouchable for as long as he is president (the constitution protects him) but many people are waiting for him as soon as he leaves office, don't worry.

-> Pasqua is a notorious crook and embezzler... unfortunately, just as he was going to be judged, he was re-elected as a senator. Now, we must wait for the Senate to vote his protection off first, before we can have a fair trial.

Does France have an impeachment process? Not saying he should be impeached because I do not believe there is enough evidence for that, but im curious if they have anything of the sort.

We're going a little of topic here, but basically the only way to impeach a French president is if he's suspected of a treason act (mostly during war times) or a crime. Apart from that, it's virtually impossible.
