After memogate there was nothing left for Rather to do but leave CBS. It was annouced in the New York Times in September that Rather was planning to leave in the spring.

CBS Tries to Clear Up Future of 'Evening News'
QUOTE(archieved article may require regisration)
The options under consideration include having Mr. Rather step down sometime next spring, perhaps near the end of the prime-time season in May, giving his replacement the relatively low-profile summer months to find his or her bearings, said the executive, who requested anonymity out of fear of being fired at a time of turmoil at CBS News. But no date had been fixed.

Rather now has choosen the date to be 8 days prior to Tom Brokaw in early spring: March 9, 2005.

Dan Rather to Leave 'CBS Evening News'
QUOTE
"I have been lucky and blessed over these years to have what is, to me, the best job in the world and to have it at CBS News," Rather said. "Along the way, I've had the honor of working with some of the most talented, dedicated professionals in the world, and I'm appreciative of the opportunity to continue doing so in the years ahead."

The questions in the poll stem from the idea that Rather could be leaving for several reasons. Questions to heighthen the debate:
  1. Did memogate have an impact on Rather's career?
  2. Who should replace Rather?
  3. Should CBS pick a replacement more consverative then Rather?

Well hate to burst your bubble yehoshua but he is only leaving his anchor chair on the evening news, he is not leaving CBS entirely since he is staying around for 60 minutes tongue.gif . And quite frankly how low the ratings for evening news on the regular stations it really does not matter that he giving up this chair.

Did memogate have an impact on Rather's career?
Yes, but less than his detractors would have hoped. Certainly inside CBS, he remains a powerful figure and he could have ridden this out without too much effort. He's not accountable to anyone other than perhaps Andy Hayward, and I think even Andy would think twice about trying to push Dan into anything, especially since Dan won the battle over the hairbrained co-anchoring with Connie Chung. Frankly, I just think Dan is tired of the daily grind and wants an easier life working on hard news stories for 60 Minutes.

Who should replace Rather?
John Roberts has been touted as a successor, but I wouldn't be suprised if they rotate people through the chair so that one person doesn't gain the kind of internal control Dan had. They may well also split the job of Managing Editor and Anchor, and make the latter just a "read the prompter" job.

Should CBS pick a replacement more consverative then Rather?
If they even consider someone's politics as a criteria, they should just pull the shutters and turn out the lights.
