During Rumsfeld's not-so-highly publicized visit to the Middle East, a soldier asked him why he and other soldiers had to scrounge for materials to shore up their unarmored vehicles. Our nation’s second in command and Defense Secretary, the one and only Rummy had this to say:
QUOTE
“You go to war with the Army you have...not the Army you might want to wish to have at a later time…If you think about it, you can have all the armor in the world on a tank and a tank can still be blown up. And you can have an up-armored Humvee and it can be blown up." NY Times

That sounds an awful lot like “tough titty, boys, deal with it, not my problem.” I bet he never travels in anything less than a fully armored vehicle during his “morale-boosting visits.” dry.gif

And when another soldier questioned how long they were going to be held over via the stop loss policy, ol’ Rummy was definitely put on the spot. This wasn’t the unconditional love (or fear) he has come to expect. And after getting all testy, he rambled on and on about how it was nothing new, it’s an understood policy, etc., but NEVER ANSWERED THE QUESTION.

This man, besides being distasteful, disrespectful, vile, arrogant, belligerent and elitist, he is incompetent and a liar. Some of his “accomplishments include”:

Poor planning (if any) for the Iraqi invasion, occupation and security
Underestimating troop strength needs
Underestimating equipment needs
Underestimating his adversary
Alienated Iraqi people
Along with Bush, managed to turn the world’s good will toward us after 9/11 to disgust
Disregarded advice from generals
Disregarded the Geneva Convention guidelines
Lied about torture
No plan for the peace
No plan for transition
No regard for the soldier on the ground
Put the stop-loss policy in place
1,400 American deaths

I’m sure there are tons more, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

He has proven himself to be a horrible war planner, and an even worse peace planner. And his personality ain’t winning him any prizes, either. His only virtue seems to be his yes-man relationship with Bush. Of all the cabinet members who are leaving, the worst of the worst is the one who is proudly kept on.

With all of Rumsfeld’s missteps, mishandlings and lying, is he fit to be Secretary of Defense?

What will it take for Bush to get rid of Rumsfeld…if anything?

Do you think Bush won’t fire Rumsfeld because of how it would look to the country – they might sit up and take notice of how badly things are going?

(and a speculative question:)
If Rumsfeld continues “performing” as he has the last 4 years in the next 4 years, what can we expect?
