I’m not much of a sports fan, myself. I had a former neighbor whose stated philosophy was “If the Red Wings are on the television, don’t even interrupt me to offer me a fresh beer. I can find the refrigerator myself during the commercials.” I thought of him when I read a story in this morning’s Detroit Free Press. HOCKEY'S HIGHEST HONOR: Free Stanley, Canada cries states in part:

So it seems like salvaging an NHL season is about as likely now as finding a smooth sheet of ice in the sixth circle of hell. But that doesn't mean there won't be a scrap for the Stanley Cup anyway.

Three Edmonton, Alberta, men say they're disgusted with both sides in the league's dispute over how to split up the ridiculous amount of cash at its disposal. So they launched Free Stanley, a whimsical but not entirely quixotic effort to wrest control of the world's most famous trophy from the cold, dead clutches of the NHL and return it to its original home: Canada.

I immediately searched America’s Debate to see what kind of comment’s this was bringing, and the most recent reference to The Stanley Cup that I found was:

It's always a good day to be a hockey fan... it's gotten even better... if you're a Tampa Bay Lightning fan...

The Tampa Bay Lightning of the NHL are offering free, unlimited drinks of brew to Tampa Bay fans who hold season tickets for the 2004-05 season.

Hmmm... If this is the 2004 - 05 season, perhaps the Tampa Bay management had an inkling of what it would cost them before they made the offer...

The NHL ‘s chief legal officer is quoted in the Detroit Free Press article as being “not concerned” about a legal challenge for the Stanley Cup; but it occurs to me that a suit by Canadians would most likely be filed in Canada, not in the United States. According to the article, the major arguments being made that the NHL never had a right to the Stanley Cupwere found at the NHL’s web site.

Points to discuss:

Will “Free Stanley” prevail in the Canadian courts?

If they do prevail, will American courts force the NHL to return the Stanley Cup to Canada?
