The Washington Post is reporting today in a political "gossip" column that the Bush administration is considering asking Joseph Lieberman to replace Donald Rumsfeld when he steps down from his post.

Such a move would not be unprecedented. Bill Clinton selected a republican (William S. Cohen) as his secretary of defense during his second term.

What do you think of this move? Would it work to defuse some of the rabid partisanship that has been on display during the past 2 presidential elections?

I think it would be an excellent idea. For one, it would show those who are against us that both parties are to a certain extent in sync with one another when it come sto the war and that the president is serious about building in-roads with members of the opposition party. Being a senior member of congress, Lieberman could stand up to even the staunch anti-war democrat(a.k.a.-Barbara Lee, etc..) and perhaps change a reluctant few votes to the presiden't side.

First of all, I think the world of Senator Lieberman. He is one of the most reasoned voices in DC from either side of the aisle and he'd make a fine Secretary of Defense. No question in my mind about that at all.

Having said that though, I'd hope that if he is offered this postion he will turn it down and remain in the Senate. I think he is better able to serve this nation in that role than he would as the Secretary of Defense. I don't think it would do much to quell the partisianship, some on the far left of the Democratic Party don't seem to hold Joe Lieberman in much higher regard than they do President Bush.

I think if Bush is indeed interested in replacing Rumsfeld with someone from the other side of the aisle, I'd look more towards someone like Sam Nunn I think.

Joseph Lieberman may be a suck-up, however, he may be a good selection for the job. He's served on the Homeland Security and Gov. Affairs and Armed Services committees.

See, thats why I would hope he gets it. I am tired of the far left ruling the Democratic party. Since the Democrats are gonna get outvoted in the senate no matter what, I think it would be a good thing to have a democrat, especially Liberman, as Secretary of Defence. I have no doubt that he could do a better job than Donald Rumsfeld. Then again its hard to do worse.

I don't think Liberman would be able to accomplish anything. I'm not sure that Liberman would be fool enough to accept responsibility for this mess that he has been outspoken against. Collin Powell was unable to change the course of things in ways that he wanted to, and got reprimanded for going to far in his rhetoric. Liberman is a firecracker, and I have a feeling that as Secretary of Defence, he'd be like a rabbid poodle yapping at the Administration as it brushes him off and smacks him down.

Interesting "gossip" nontheless.

I love Rummy and could not see why Bush would want to replace him! He has tried continuously to modernize the Pentagon with a force for the future and make harmless the dead weight union civilians obstructionist, one of the largest cost outlays of the DOD.

I really like Lieberman as a rock steady defense leftie. I would prefer Joe Bidden who I fear the most as a 2008 presidential contender, maybe if he lost power in the Senate and the comities he sits he could go to DOD and screw up before the 08 to prevent him becoming the next president as he is the absolutely the Dem’s best choice.

No, it wouldn’t solve anything since he isn’t popular only 3% in comparison to Al Gore’s 8% popularity in the party in 03 primaries. Plus he is Jewish and the world would blame the administration for every mid east action as being influenced by the Jewish state.
