However one defines the term "Middle Class", a fervent belief in their own unique indispensibility in the scheme of things is a widespread characteristic among those who count themselves as belonging to this social group. Indeed, it is a constant mantra of the Middle Class that "a strong Middle Class" is an essential component of a healthy prosperous society.
There are, undeniably, large numbers of people who carry out a wide range of essential tasks, usually for low pay, without which civilized and sanitary life would be possible - garbage collectors, hospital porters etc etc. However, AS INDIVIDUALS such people are not regarded as "essential" by Middle Class people in the same way that Middle Class people regard their own individual selves as "essential". Pandering to Middle Class self-regard and Middle Class "concerns" is crucial for those seeking election to office in western democracies. In Britain, the Labour Party has felt the need to abandon every principle it once held dear in order to appeal to "Middle England".
A favourite Middle Class gripe is people wanting "Something for Nothing". By this, Middle Class people do not mean their own desire to pay people as little as possible for mowing their lawns, cleaning their houses, caring for their children while they are off playing golf - indeed, a section of the Middle Class regards a large pool of cheap skivvie domestic labor as something of a birthright. No, by "something for nothing" Middle Class people mean, for example, their skivvie labor having health care they cannot afford out of their meagre wages being paid for by "The Tax Payer" ie by their own indispensible Middle Class selves.
