For those of you like me who love computer games and are broke beyond all reason there's a little gem that you, like me, may have passed up for a couple years.

It a free, easy on the hardware, highly addictive, free game from the Wolfenstein series.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
This is a game that many (including myself) would gladly pay for and yet here it is for all to enjoy.

It's a team based WWII shooter with infinite replay value, provided you build up the skills not to get splattered in every game.

Multiplayer only, not really worth playing with less than a two-on-two. The max is 32 players, which is about a thousand times as fun, grab of whole bunch of bored people and tell them to download, or just play over the net.

College students can off course play some awesome games over dorm LAN.

I'm playing Johnny-Battleseed at the moment, spreading the word so that we can all enjoy ignoring upcoming finals together.

I had started playing Matrix Online, and hoped to develop quite an addiction during my Summer break, but it makes me sour.gif!

I haven't been motion sick while playing a game in nearly a decade, but something about this one does it. Plus my computer is nowhere near what it needs to be to handle the graphics. So I guess I'll stick with playing chess on the Chessmaster 10th Ed. server, and getting beat regularly, sad to say.

Awhile Back there was a topic about Computer Games which has since closed.

Having not been a member at the time of the topic I didn't participate.  sad.gif

But, it seemed like a fun topic, and computer games have come a long way since then, so I thought I would start it up again.

What game is your current Addiction?  Your Favorite Game?

What is the all time BEST computer game ever?

As for me, I will take them in reverse order.

The all time best computer game would be Pirates! by Sid Meier.  Recently remade!  THANKS SID!!!!!!!!  thumbsup.gif  and is a very simple to start, hard to beat, open ended sim of sorts about Pirates (obviously).  Link

I could not get enough of the original back in my Apple IIe days, and I cannot get enough of the remake now.

My current addiction is of course the Remake of Pirates!.  However, Joint Operations, by NovaLogic (Link)an online modern shooter as a close second.

Another Favorite was the game Fallout.  It was a great RPG, with a non-linear plotline that was alot of fun to play.  I never got my hands on Fallout 2 but I bet if I did, it would be an addiction for a few months as well.  And I was completely addicted to Neverwinter Nights for a time.  Of course it was a throw back to my youth and table top RPGs so that was part of the fun.

As for the Massive Multiplayer games.  I have played a bunch, but not really held my interest for too long.  They were all so repetitive that once you got past learning the ropes all you do is level, level, oh and of course, level.  dry.gif  I wish someone would come out with something that has a bit more depth, and maybe even have plots that result in real players changing the game environment (like destroying a big evil thingie or whatever).

The only computer "games" that I ever played more than once was the old Microsoft flight simulator and some casino program that allows you to play blackjack, craps, etc.. I played my kids on their x-box on Christmas day when they got it and they kicked my butt.

If my son gets too cocky, I take him golfing, give him a shot per hole, and then remind him what a real game is all about.

Just wondering if anybody else here has been playing Battlefield 2?

In my opinion, this game is the next evolution in first person shooter games. Incredible attention to detail with regards to maps, weapons capability, and real to life graphics make this the most impressive new game i've seen in 5 years.

Add in the incentives for teamplay, reward and rank system that also encourages teamplay, discourages team killing and the new "commander" mode, (and way to many other fun features to put in a quick post) and you have one addictive game. Wow, i've already logged WAAAAAAAAAY to many hours and i've only had it for 2 weeks.

Only 2 problems with the game that I see. First, it is hardware intensive. You need at least 1 Gig of RAM and a darn good Video Card to even run it. Secondly, it is buggy for many new players (although what new computer game isn't?).

Having said that, I highly reccomend it. All my other games are now sitting gathering dust, and i'm heading to work blurry eyed because i'm up all night playing the darn thing!

I don't really play computer games.

I play Xbox games.

Hmmm. Definitely Halo 2. Not a question.

Notables:
Project Gotham
Project Gotham 2
Amped
Amped 2
Halo
Ninja Gaiden
Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow
Splinter Cell

The second to last one I'm not sure of. I just got it and it is very realistic.

Perhaps it has gotten better by now. However, a month or so ago I got fed up with the Matrix online. There were enough bug issues that I felt like I was paying to be a beta tester.

Now I have discovered WoW (World of Warcraft for the uninitiated). WOW!

This game is expansive, the graphics are beautiful, and yet no lag, and I have yet to run into a bug (being playing around 6 weeks or so now).

Warning: This game is MAJORLY addicting!!

Right now, I'm not really addicted to any game. Sometimes I'll play Abrams Battle Tank, 688 Attack Sub, or Choplifter III for the SNES.

What is the all time BEST computer game ever?
For me, those 3 games will stand the test of time as long as I have a computer and the ability to boot into DOS. Abrams Battle Tank and 688 Attack Sub can also be played on the Sega Genesis. You can get the roms at romnation and you can get the emulators at http://www.zophar.net

Katamari Damacy. It's fun! I love it!

I also supervise the playing of Harvest Moon with my children to ensure that none of the animals die...as it is very upsetting for them. That is a really fun game too. smile.gif

The all time best computer game design ever, in the opinion of most senior game designers, is M.U.L.E. by Dan Bunten, published in 1983. I hasten to add that this is the all time best computer game design, not necessarily the all time best game. Dan orchestrated all the resources available into the optimal design. Nobody has ever succeeded in putting all the pieces together so harmoniously.

My all time favorites, are the "Thief" series.  Set in near-Medieval Europe (there are the beginings of electricity and mechanics), you are Garrett, a master thief, trained in the ways of making yourself nearly invisible by a group called the Keepers, watchers of the mortal world, in a way.  Invariably you get caught up in a plot that overtakes your life and forces you to save the world, even if you don't really want to.

Hail fellow Thief! I'm currently in the middle of Thief III and am loving it. No other game like it. Of course it does take a good deal of patience to wait in the shadows long enough to identify the nearby guards and their patrol patterns.

I especially like the voice used for the not-so-bright city guards. If I were a real thief I'd get caught the first day when I burst out laughing while trying to hide.

Other favorites:
Star Wars: Jedi Knight (all versions) The lightsaber is what really distinguishes this game from other first person shooters. Jedi Academy had the best lightsaber implementation; Jedi Outcast had the best gameplay

Star Trek: Elite Force The most satisfying artillery, in my opinion, of all the first-person shooters. Multiplayer was especially fun. And most of the time I'm ok with my kids watching me play this one.

Neverwinter Nights I'm not so much into the online play, but network play with my wife and brother-in-law was great.

Sim City (2000/3000) Fun game, at least at first while you're still struggling to make ends meet while build a self-sufficient city. Later gameplay can get tedious, unless you intentionally set off some natural disaster. I haven't played 4 yet.

Pirates I have only played the NES version, but was addicted to it. One time when I was playing it, I lost all track of time, and was only reminded when the sun came up.

Sacred Not very big-name, but it's one of the more fun kill-things-and-level-up games.

What is the all time BEST computer game ever?
I would have to say StarCraft. I still cannot get over how well they made the three races completely different from each other in terms of strategy and tactics, but managed to keep them so well balanced. I haven't seen that in any other game. (Haven't played Warcraft III, though...it might win).
