Awhile Back there was a topic about Computer Games which has since closed.

Having not been a member at the time of the topic I didn't participate. sad.gif

But, it seemed like a fun topic, and computer games have come a long way since then, so I thought I would start it up again.

What game is your current Addiction? Your Favorite Game?

What is the all time BEST computer game ever?

As for me, I will take them in reverse order.

The all time best computer game would be Pirates! by Sid Meier. Recently remade! THANKS SID!!!!!!!! thumbsup.gif and is a very simple to start, hard to beat, open ended sim of sorts about Pirates (obviously). Link

I could not get enough of the original back in my Apple IIe days, and I cannot get enough of the remake now.

My current addiction is of course the Remake of Pirates!. However, Joint Operations, by NovaLogic (Link)an online modern shooter as a close second.

Another Favorite was the game Fallout. It was a great RPG, with a non-linear plotline that was alot of fun to play. I never got my hands on Fallout 2 but I bet if I did, it would be an addiction for a few months as well. And I was completely addicted to Neverwinter Nights for a time. Of course it was a throw back to my youth and table top RPGs so that was part of the fun.

As for the Massive Multiplayer games. I have played a bunch, but not really held my interest for too long. They were all so repetitive that once you got past learning the ropes all you do is level, level, oh and of course, level. dry.gif I wish someone would come out with something that has a bit more depth, and maybe even have plots that result in real players changing the game environment (like destroying a big evil thingie or whatever).

Starcraft or Diablo 2 has to be my all time favorite games on the computer. Both were massively addictive, and both were FREE!! I am done with MMG's. They are all starting to cost to play the game online. You'd think the game should cost only like 10-20 dollars or something. But no, they cost just as much as regular game. Now I think I am going to stick to console games. Waiting on the new zelda for Game Cube... I've become a geek. online2long.gif online2long.gif online2long.gif

Edited to add

Who am I kidding I've always been a geek, I just am becoming less ashamed to show it!!

Power to the Wierd People!!! thumbsup.gif

By the way, where did you get that nifty tie-dye pocket protector?
Antny
Hrmmm...Warcraft and all it's evolutions rock...Quake is up there. I'm a bit behind the times on the new releases tho, don't game much anymore...I prolly will once I graduate and have a real life thumbsup.gif

Wow, I never game anymore...what's wrong with me???
Devils Advocate
I know I speak for my brother and I whenI say Diablo 2 and Command and Conqure. But man, that was like five years ago, or more... Lately it's been XBox and Halo, but I've stopped because for some reason now I get this overwhelming feeling of wasting time. Like I could be doing something better like playing guitar or reading AD posts or socializing or exercising or...and the list goes on. But when I used to game, overall I think my favorites were tied at Command and Conqure and Diablo 2 no doubt, everything else on computer was just a bore.
turnea
Strangely enough I have become readdicted to Starcraft. I don't own many PC games seeing as my sytems havent been very powerful. On console/arcade it's Soul Calibur all the way. biggrin.gif

My current addiction: World of Warcraft

Yes, it's an MMORPG but it's different from any of the others you've played. For one thing, the developers remembered above all else it's supposed to be FUN, and they removed most of the common MMORPG annoyances and replaced them with common sense. You never need to go kill mobs just to level. Oh sure, you'll kill plenty, but it'll always be for some quest that gives more exp. than the killing does and adds to the storyline.

My nomination for best computer game ever: Fallout 2

I actually like the Fallout storyline slightly better, but it's too short and has some annoyances that Fallout 2 fixes. Play both, you won't be disappointed if you like RPGs at all. About as immersive as a single-player RPG with a third-person view can be. Unless of course you passionately hate the post-Holocaust genre...

P.S.: Overlandsailor, as a Fallout fan you MUST get Fallout 2. Look for it in the $9.99 bargain racks.

I have been wrapped up in EQ2 now since November... Help me!!!!!

It's not a computer game, per say, but I'm addicted to Halo 2. The online multiplayer component has kept me up late at night. In fact, I spend almost all my free time playing. I should get a life. I should probably lock my XBox up for a while until I'm free of this addiction.

Alright! What's your character? What server do you play on? I have a 27 dwarf paladin on Blackhand. World of Warcraft is an amazing game; I do not recommend it to anyone because it is like a black hole which will eat away ALL YOUR SPARE TIME!!!! tongue.gif

I also play a WW2 shooter called Medal of Honor (PC).

What game is your current Addiction? Your Favorite Game?

I'm playing catch-up with an RPG from Dungeons & Dragons: Icewind Dale. My brother found it at a BIG LOTS store and gave it to me for Christmas.

I have played these AD&D games as well: Baldur's Gate, Shadows of Amn, Throne of Bhaal, and Neverwinter Nights.

What is the all time BEST computer game ever?

My sentimental favorite is Shadows of Amn. I typically run a female paladin (no surprise there--the character name is my user name here, Elspeth!), although I am currently running a half-elven fighter/druid named Elsa in Icewind Dale.

I am a long-time AD&D player (since 1982). thumbsup.gif

I use to play online games like Neverwinter Nights and Everquest, but they took too much time and effort once I got into them. Nowdays I prefer offline games that I can play when I want to play and pick up from where I left off. My current favorite is Railroad Tycoon 3 in the single player mode. I like it because I like trains in general and also it gives me the opportunity to exploit the "little guy" by manipulating the stock when I need a few million in my pocket to win the game. thumbsup.gif

What game is your current Addiction? Your Favorite Game?

Currently I'm putting in way too many hours playing World of Warcraft online. It's my first MMPOG and I love it!

What is the all time BEST computer game ever?
I used to be addicted to Warcraft 2 and counter strike. However, Half Life 2 is getting there as well.

The same team that made BG , IWD etc also made Planescape Torment, which is along a similar vein and absolutely fantastic. Very complex plot and characers (its set in the Planar city of Sigil, where Haer Dae'lis in BG2 comes from...). Its the same engine as Baldurs Gate and you get to travel to all the different planes...

So thats probably my favourite RPG, although Baldurs Gate 2 has good character interactions...

Amlord
I like strategic wargames, as well as role playing games.

Currently, my "addiction" is Rome:Total War although my video card is a bit weak to run it at any decent resolution. I also play the other Total War games (Medieval and Shogun:Total War) on occasion.

I also like Neverwinter Nights line of games.

I also still play Everquest occasionally. I would move to EQ2 or WoW if I upgraded my video card, in all likelihood.

Best game ever: hmmm.gif

I like Knight of the Old Republic immensely (a Star Wars RPG). Civilization 3 is also one of the top games of all time.
Dontreadonme
I've always been into the Medal of Honor games....I'm currently in Pacific Assault. But I've played and enjoyed games like Baldur's Gate. Started with the first Doom and was hooked.
My wife always used to get annoyed when I played them on the computer (i.e. 'not spending quality time with her'). What's ironic is that she went to Iraq for a year, and I haven't really played in months and months.
I guess my two rugrats sucked up more 'quality time' than I had expected.
Eeyore
I like the idea of finding RPGs but I have no interest in internet interactive games that take hours and hours.

I play Civilization and only grudgingly move from one version to another.

I do play card games online like cribbage and hearts and find that to be fun for a hand or two at a time.
loreng59
I liked Pirates a lot, back in the old days, have not played the remake yet. Also like Hunt for Red October. But am playing Civilization III and like that the most at this point
DaytonRocker
After reading some of these games, I'm realizing I need to get a life and have more fun. I have very little spare time (full time day job, side engineering business about 20 hours a week, an electric rock band, an acoustic rock trio, 6 year old daughter, high maintenance wife, etc), but manage to try to have a little fun when I can...

So, do I try some of these cool games described here??? Nooo....

Instead, I go back into a complete dork mode and play:

Microsoft Flight Simulator - I set the weather and visibility to complete crap with about a 1/4 mile visibility and fly instrument hops to and from places of interest (normally, Dayton-Wright brothers/KMGY here in my secret undisclosed location, to Baltimore/DC, New York, Boston, etc).

MVP Baseball - great graphics and game play and feeds my ego completely because I create myself as a player and put myself into the Cincinnati Reds lineup. I set all my abilities to maxed out, so I bat somewhere around .750 all the time, lead the league in stolen bases and homeruns (I'm a charter member of the 80/80 club), play in the All Star game, and win the world series every year. I can make Roger Clemens look like an 8 year old girl trying to pitch in the big leagues.

Falcon 4.0 - best combat flight sim ever.

Grand Theft Auto - I know, not politically correct, but I do have some fun with these games (I have 3 of them). Just your basic outrunning of cops and beating up anybody that gets in your way.

Best ever? Beats me...I've probably never played it, but should consider it.
nighttimer
wacko.gif My preference is for sports games such as Madden 2005 and NBA Live 2005. Games where you have to run through mazes shooting monsters doesn't move me much. I like something with a clear and definite conclusion.

When I'm frustrated and need a quick release of agression, Tekken 4 is a good outlet.
Izdaari
Incidentally, for the Baldur's Gate series fans, (and I'm one too) the Fallout series is also by the Black Isle group, though Bethesda (the Daggerfall/Morrowind people) has bought the title now that Black Isle is defunct, and is working on Fallout 3.
logophage
I'm with Amlord. I've been really enjoying Rome:Total War. I just won the Imperial campaign (as the House of Julii) and am now playing the Carthaginians. Time for a little history changin'! I've taken Sicily and one city on Italy, repelled a bunch of attacks on my city in Sardinia, and the Spanish/Gaul alliance can't seem to break my hold on Corduba (and I'm playing on super-hard mode).

I like turn-based strategy/builder games which I can play at my leisure. However, I did play Half-Life 2 -- gave me motion sickness though. Its dystopian feel makes me smile.
Jaime
I don't know if sharing this places me on the analyst's couch or not - but the two games I love to play the most are SimCity and The Sims. Yeah, yeah, god-complex, I hear ya. w00t.gif
deathalive
All time best game ever has to be Medal of Honor Allied Assault. The graphics and sound and just the reality of it makes me feel like I really am storming the beach of Normandy.

Current addiction? Marine Sharp Shooter. It puts me right in the jungle or arctic with nothing but my rifle and a steady trigger finger.
SuzySteamboat
Jaime, you know, I wanted to say something but feared amongst the RPGers and strategy gamers, no one would have any idea what I was talking about laugh.gif In fact, for the past few weeks, I've been on a Sims 2/GTA: San Andreas binge of sorts. When one is loading, play the other, and when that's loading, play the other. Unfortunately, I beat San Andreas and so bought Vice City for the PS2 - I had it for the PC but the controls make it really hard to beat certain missions. So I beat Vice City one night, woke up the next day and felt as if I had no purpose in life -

... [I]until University! laugh.gif I pre-ordered mine from GameStop and am supposed to be able to pick it up tomorrow, and man I can't wait. Unfortunately, I need to backup my folders because not only do I have textures that aren't expansion pack ready, I have a bunch of mods and hacks. And that totals somewhere around 12,000 files, or a few gigs. It's gonna be fun. But of course if you're only talking about the Sims 1, you're not likely to have any idea what I'm talking about! But it was fun to make a connection for a brief bit biggrin.gif

DTOM, I can't say I really like Pacific Assault. I felt like the controls for MOH through Breakthrough, were the best for a FPS ever. PA didn't do it for me. Do you guys still play? I am a member of the Art of War clan, we run a Breakthrough freezetag server called the Mercenaries Camp. I am :[AoW]:Miyamoto_Musashi. Most of my clan tends to be riflers. The truest skill of the game is using the bolt-action rifle. My favorite is the German KAR, and the Italian Carcano.

If you get on, come check us out! DTOM, I'd love to have a chance for a committed pacifist to own a career soldier!! tongue.gif

Glad to see an Activision game make the list(Rome)! I'm QA at ATVI, my last game, Vampire Bloodlines wasn't on anyone's list tho, for you RPG nerds I recommend picking it up when it comes down to $20-30 smile.gif

If you guys liked MOHA, then you definitely need to check out Call of Duty.. It's the team who did the original MOHAA, and The Game of the Year edition is a steal at $30 (the Russian campaign is incredible, especially for us Commie sympathizers.)

Right now I'm weening off WoW (60 Shammy on Tichondrius), and enjoying classic MAME gaming, Burnout 3, and the new Paper Mario (yes, I actually play everything and all genres smile.gif

Smorpheus, have no fear, Bloodlines is appreciated. I have it and I have beaten it with every clan, seen every ending, done all the sidequests. Great job!

My favorite would have to be Deus Ex (1 and 2). But then again there are so many to choose from! OVERLOAD!!! w00t.gif w00t.gif w00t.gif. I'm actually playing Rome as well at the moment. Highly addictive, especially to someone who has a fascination with ancient Rome.
Doclotus
I was an Everquest junkie for many years. World of Warcraft is my latest addiction but not nearly at the level EQ was (thank god). Doclotus is my toon on the Icecrown server, Horde side.

Best game of all time? Donkey Kong smile.gif
Cyle
My current addiction is Golden Sun: The Lost Age for Game Boy Advance.
My Favorite games is The Whole Golden Sun Series.(two games, but they play like one). But the all-time BEST computer game ever is: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It is the most massive one player RPG I have ever played in my life, and it never gets boring. It's one of those games you play and play until you just have to stop because of the build up of other games you have to play.
NeoCon30
I rarely play any video games, but I do own a playstation II and the only games I have are Grand Theft Auto and Madden. I play Madden because my superior intellect allows me to conquer my opponent on a regular basis. I deploy a run game that drives people crazy and I can use Michael Vick better than anyone who has picked up a paddle.

As far as Grand Theft Auto, I love shooting cops in their face and watching them bleed on the sidewalk. Then I take their guns and shoot other cops. I cannot imagine anything more satisfying.
Ringwraith
Well, finally a topic I feel safe to reply in.... unsure.gif

Some great games being mentioned. I had heard of Rome and was somewhat interested in it, but having played many RTS games in the past was leary of buying another one.

Which brings me to what i'm playing now. Recently, I have gone back to 2 old favorites that have given me COUNTLESS hours of fun playing. Specifically, Medal of Honor Allied Assault (which I play primarily online versus others) and my other all time favorite Age of Empires II...The Conquerers Expansion. I team up with a good friend several times a week to get slaughtered online vs. these computer gaming geeks with AOE....but one glorious day...I WILL win. I'm somewhat suprised that this particular game hasn't been mentioned yet.

Some of my other favs would include Call of Duty, ALL of the Battlefield series including Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam. Also Blitzkrieg which is probably my absolute favorite RTS game of all time, and Empire Earth..yet another RTS game. For those WWII buffs out there who enjoy RTS, I HIGHLY reccomend Blitzkrieg. They did a good job combining realism with playability and its super fun. There is also a small but loyal online gaming community for Blitzkrieg.

I also play ESPN football on Xbox (MUCH better than Madden IMHO) NBA Live, and Medal of Honor Frontline.

Games i'm looking forward to this year (hopefully if they stay on track for release) are the new Battlefield Modern Combat game, Age of Empires III, and Blitzkrieg II. Its gonna be a great year for gaming!!!

Now...back to lurker mode....
Mike
I go through phases with games. I'll get one, play it for a couple of weeks, and then never play again. The problem is that these things are so darn expensive. PC games or PS2 games, I've got better places to put my money than games. I do seem to play a lot of them, though.

I'll admit it: I'm a cheater. Cheat codes, patches, trainers... yep, that's me. It seems I will do whatever I can to make the game as easy as possible, thereby making it boring. It doesn't make much sense, really.

I don't really play many games at the moment, but when I do, they are usually the free Flash games that you find scattered across the web.

Another game I play regularly (if you consider it a game) is online poker. I play at ultimatebet under the username "everyone" so that when I win, it says, "everyone wins $1.50 with three aces." laugh.gif I started playing for free, but then I hit a royal flush and won a real money jackpot of $5. I've since turned it into about $16 playing penny/two penny no limit hold'em, so I guess I'm not all that bad.

As for the best game of all time in regards to revolutionizing video games, I'd have to say the Grand Theft Auto series. It's not my favorite, though. Not only are they incredibly fun games, but they keep getting better with every release. They're definitely not games you want to play with kids, though. wink.gif

Here are some of the other games I've played recently (in no particular order):

MTX Mototrax - A nice-looking dirtbike game. It's fun to ride a motorcycle for a while, but the tricks are completely unrealistic. This game lost its luster in about a week.

Pirates (the new one)- It's a pretty good game, but my poor little graphics card didn't fare so well. The gameplay seems to get very repetitive very fast. Sail your boat somewhere, sink other boats on the way in hopes that you defeat a famous pirate, and do some lame dancing. It kept me interested for about a week.

Need for Speed Underground 2 - This game was a lot of fun. The graphics are amazing, with nice reflections everywhere. But when it comes right down to it, it's the standard drive-fast-to-build-a-faster-car-and-drive-faster game. I played it for about 2 weeks.

Rollercoaster Tycoon (2+3) - Two was a great game. You could get a trainer that gave you unlimited money and unlocked the rides. I played the heck out of this game on my old P-200 (with MMX Technology, you know). I picked up a new copy about 8 months ago at BestBuy for $2 (pricing error, I think), and the game is still a lot of fun. RCT3, on the other hand, is awful. They changed it from 2d to 3d, and did a horrible job at it. To me, the game is barely playable.

SimCity4- Probably my favorite game of all time. It's got nearly everything, although there is certainly room for improvement. I'd like to see an "in-car" mode where you can drive around properly, instead of this awful overhead view that reminds me of the early GTA games. Of course, I think they need to wait for technology to catch up to their ideas. I've played all the SimCity games, and have liked them all.

The Sims 2 - Another good game that I still play. I really don't play it how it is meant to be played, though. I couldn't care less about the actual people in the game-- I like to build houses! I've got a neighborhood with about 10 custom houses. The all look great from the outside, but are not furnished or anything like that. I really just try to push the limit of what the game will allow for construction.

The Political Machine - Yeah, I got this one. It was fun for about 6 hours. Then, you realize that all you need to do to win is raise money faster than your opponent. Big surprise.

Tony Hawk Underground 2 - OK, I don't know why, but I like skateboarding games. I don't skateboard, and am not really interested in it, but for some reason the gameplay is great. This game is very well polished, and so it makes for some addicting gameplay. This one had my thumbs sore for about a month.

Rev_DelFuego
I'm current winding down on WoW, Hunter on Malygos, and Im working on The Sims Bustin Out for my girlfriend. As far as the best games I've played it's a tough call. I love the whole Command & Conquer series, Red Alert 2 being the best closely followed by Generals. Since I grew up with a twin brother I was always partial to 2 player games because of the wingman, games like Starfox, Contra, and Jackal. If I had to pick one game I think it would have to be................................... Mariocart, but even that has its bad points like my girlfriend is now invincible on the first track.
Horyok
My favorites?

Eye of the Beholder 1 (1990) & 2 (1992) ... These RPG's are just too good!

and Warcraft 3 (of course! thumbsup.gif )
NiteGuy
Like Looms, I'm a big fan of the Deus-Ex series and the System Shock series.

I used to play Unreal Tournament online a lot, but I never could get used to the look and feel of the newer versions of the game.

I've played a lot of the other games mentioned here like Icewind Dale, and Command and Conquer, but I just couldn't get into them. Guess I'm more of a First Person kinda guy.

My all time favorites, are the "Thief" series. Set in near-Medieval Europe (there are the beginings of electricity and mechanics), you are Garrett, a master thief, trained in the ways of making yourself nearly invisible by a group called the Keepers, watchers of the mortal world, in a way. Invariably you get caught up in a plot that overtakes your life and forces you to save the world, even if you don't really want to.

Your weapons are a dagger, and various arrows, including broadhead, fire arrows for lighting torches and killing zombies, water arrows for putting out torches and other fire-type light sources, and up until this last version, rope or vine arrows for climbing buildings and such (now you have climbing gloves-I preferred the rope arrows, but what are ya gonna do?). The levels are pretty much completely free form, with multiple ways in, out and through most of them. I hate games where there is only one "correct" way to get through the levels.

The thing I like best about them, is that they are true "first person sneakers" rather than first person shooters. Oh, sure, you can go around just killing everyone in sight, if you want. But it's much more fun, and challenging to boot, to get in, get your riches, defeat the bad guy, and leave without anyone even knowing you were there. Deus Ex and System Shock and a few others had some of this, but you can play through the entire Thief series that way, if you have a penchant for patience, and for solving some puzzles.
Fife and Drum
Huge fan of Civilization (I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned more often), the one draw back is it takes soooo long to complete a game, Command and Conquer and the Ages of Empires series.

Tiger Woods golf during the winter to help with the golf jones.

I thoroughly enjoy both Medal of Honor and Call of Duty, have become completely addicted to playing COD Allied Assault online. Great for stress relief.

A few years back a colleague at work started playing Everquest and told me it's nickname is Evercrack. Have intentionally avoided playing since I heard that one.
Lesly
I dig roleplaying games. I played EverQuest/Crack for a handlful of year and successfully pulled the cable from my artery. That game required waaay too much time commitment to meaningfully advance your character and have a life. Then I did some Neverwinter Nights and now I'm happy with World of Warcraft. You can advance as slow or as fast as you like and most (if not all) classes can solo. I play Horde side (the bad guys) on Icecrown... when the server is up.

Anyway, I thought online gamers would appreciate this. Hehehe.

Star Wars you N00b

I was, for the longest time a Medal of Honor junkie. Played with a group of guys from Georgia who called themselves the Dawgs.

Had to stop it when It started taking up all my time....

Now I spend any free time either playing online Texas Holdem or the real thing in local tournaments. thumbsup.gif

That trailer was hilarious Red. LMAOROTFLOL!

As for me, and I'm suprised no one's said this, it's Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Battlefield 1942 (and the Desert Combat/Gulf War mod) and soon to be Battlefield Vietnam.

For all you online gamers out there a new one is launching this week. Matrix Online link Trailer.

This is something new. It is based on the matrix movies obviously. However, according to the write ups the game developers have put together groups of role-players to run the characters of fame like Morpheus and the like. Also, real plot lines and stories are supposed to be constantly being created and managed by the developers. So it is supposed to be alot more then a simple, kill the monkey, level, kill the butterfly, level, kill the raging lemming, level type of system that seems to make up the bulk of the online games available today.

Add to that a very extensive combat system with a host of moves similar to the one on one game system fighting games.

I for one, will probably pass. Combination or no available time, and an impatience when it comes to learning key / controller combos for fighting moves.

But I am sure there are some here that will enjoy it. Have fun!!

I can't belive there are no Unreal Tournament fans hear. The depth and diversity of UT2004 made this game an instant online success. This is probably the most addictive first person shooter I've ever played and I've played most of them. I may just sue the company for contributing to my carpal tunnel. Can't wait for the next installment.

What game is your current Addiction? Your Favorite Game?

Currently, I'm playing America's Army, though being a Mac gamer, I am stuck playing an older version until the new one comes out (thanks Gamespy mad.gif).

My favorite game would have to be Half-Life, this game really did something for the shooter genre that hadn't been done before. It wasn't just run and gun, you had to take it slow and use some stealth. I quite enjoyed playing the Team Fortress multiplayer mod, this was the start of the team-based, objective-oriented online shooter. I'm not a real fan of the Deathmatch style games.

What is the all time BEST computer game ever?
Haunted House for the TRS-80! "THE INSCRIPTION READS GHOST KILLER". laugh.gif Just kidding. Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy was pretty cool, so was Planetfall... Yar's Revenge and Pitfall on the 2600. I am going to have to say that the best computer game ever is Half-Life. I haven't played Half-Life 2 yet so... I don't know about that one.

I play Unreal Tournament '04 online but not as much as my previously stated games. I love it. But I can't debate, play games and slip by in school without making sacrifices; and at home I can't make school a sacrifice (yet) so Unreal had to go.

I thought old school gamers would appreciate this. smile.gif

In other gaming news it looks like D&D is going online with 3e campaign rules. I signed up for beta. Not sure if I'll stick with it. Your experience is rewarded after you're done with a campaign and drow are not playable characters. I've always been disappointed with NWN's bias towards good aligned outcomes and inability to really change the story line. D&D will likely follow that vein.

Matrix Onine got me, and it got me BAD!! wow, it is still a little buggy, but the game is facinating. The best part is that they have writers on staff, creating small to global plot lines that you can be involved it. A world event ran a week ago, what a rush, to actually participate in things that can change the whole game rather then just, slash, Kill, earn XP, level, repeat. thumbsup.gif

On a funny note, I found this like and just HAD to share it: Funny Link

Warning, if you are over 45 years old you might not get the humor. If you don't, show it to a teenager, they will. cool.gif
