Well, here's another location specific topic but I'd love to have everyone's opinion. Today Alabama's office-holders including the governor are being inaugurated. As you know to day is the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. My questions:
Couldn't this be held on another time?

What conclusions do you draw from it?

DOnt' see where it matters one darn bit. What do you do on November 11, or May 31, Veterans Day and Memorial Day respectively? Should the democratic process be held up because it is a Holiday. We should be glad the state government is working on a holiday.

I disagree, I would be just as bothered if this was held on Veteran's Day. A day or two either way wouldn't have hurt anyone. There is no need to hold the ceremonies on a holiday. The fact that this particular day was chosen makes me wonder. There are 30 other days in January, why this one?

Act of defiance--you throw a party, hell, I'll throw a better one.

Childish.

I'm in Alabama also, I thought it was in poor taste, if for no other reason than there is no reason it couldn't have been held another day.
But then again, MLK march organizers did agree to a compromise with Gov. Riley, so is everybody happy down here?
We'll see.
Jaime
On what day is it normally held? I always thought inaugurations took place during the middle of the week.

DTOM,

You are one bitchen good dude, IMO. (Translation: you are a good thinker; I'd do any gig side-by-side and play (and even shoot) my heart out.)

This whole MLK day thing is spooky. Down below there's a parkway (where you drive, go figger--big Carlen fan) named "MLK Parkway". Big whoop about that name. Big damn deal.

It is MLK Parkway, and we like it like that.

Constitution of Alabama of 1901

QUOTE
SECTION 48

Time and place of meetings of legislature; maximum length of sessions.
The legislature shall meet quadrennially at the capitol in the senate chamber, and in the hall of the house of representatives, on the second Tuesday in January next succeeding their election, or on such other day as may be prescribed by law; and shall not remain in session longer than sixty days at the first session held under the Constitution, nor longer than fifty days at any subsequent session. If at any time it should from any cause become impossible or dangerous for the legislature to meet or remain at the capitol or for the senate to meet or remain in the senate chamber, or for the representatives to meet or remain in the hall of the house of representatives, the governor may convene the legislature, or remove it after it has convened, to some other place, or may designate some other place for the sitting of the respective houses, or either of them, as necessity may require.

So shouldn't these people have been sworn in last Tuesday?

You have to love Alabama politics. Very little attempt to be subtle. I remembered that Alabama gave the day a dual holiday. You all may not know this so I'll cut and paste it from an Alabama state holiday calender

January 21 State Holiday - Martin L. King & Robert E. Lee's Birthday Link

Isn't that special. Can't let those people get the best of us!

So the dueling events on the dual holiday are consistent.

Mike, you impress me. You actually read all that? Dang. My eyes went crossed at the first line.

Guess that's why I'm liberal! Happy MLK Day! Nobody died and the few in jail get a reprieve down the road.

I hope. us.gif

Mike: You remain impressive. And, yeah, it looks as though it should have been last Tuesday. Hmmmnn...
Mike
Yeah, well, when you read enough law, you tend to know where to look.

The true problem lied in the fact that Alabama had passed 6 constitutions within 10 years, I believe. It was a bit of a pain to find out which was the real one.

But, to remain on topic, I was not able to locate any current law changing that part of the state constitution. So, I'd think they should have held inaugurations (gotta love that spellcheck) last Tuesday.

Of all days to pick...
