It's fine for society to be open about sex, but these days it's going too far? is a question on one of the many "What are You?" political tests.

However the question is a good one. Just how open about sex should a society be? Quiet and reserved or open and flaunting? The answer of course lies somewhere in between unless you are named Robertson or Flynt.

While I personally will never complain about nudity or blunt talk about sex i am somewhat disturbed that 12 year old girls are dressing like future adult entertainment stars. Even worse when I see them with their parents my attitude is don't complain when the perverts start circling your daughter because you might as well have just put her up for bid on EBay.
Sex is used to sell anything you can imagine, milk, credit cards, shampoo--anyone actually ever orgasmed while washing their hair huh.gif
Any mall is slathered in provacative advertising and does one even need to bring up TV or magazines.
Can you go see a movie where the male and female leads are not going to end up sleeping together--even when it is as natural to the plot and script and character
as the aforementioned Robertson and Flynt sitting down together to watch home movies?

In our consumer culture have we allowed the restraints on open sexuality to be loosened too far?

Does Sex sell?
What were you sold on because of it?
Did it meet expectations?

As a Male/Female how do you view todays attitudes about sex in society?

I don't think so...we're still one of the most sexually conservative societies, and I'm not sure we're getting any benefit from that.

Well, if it doesn't, then every marketing and advertising person in the US seems to be operating on a fallacy w00t.gif . Personally, I don't think it holds much sway on me...but then most people probably think that, yet sex continues to sell. So, I'm probably wrong on this myself. While I think I understand that drinking a bunch of beer doesn't actually make women want to come over and have sex (despite what all the beer ads say), I also would much rather see a pretty woman in a commercial than not. So, I imagine Freud could have some fun with me....

Hmmm... I'm not a Male/Female (just being a male), but I'll take a shot at it anyway smile.gif . Attitudes about sex in today's society (here in the US) are still very Victorian, in my mind. While you certainly see sex almost anywhere you look (advertising and movies)...its still somewhat of a taboo subject to sit down and discuss openly with someone. In fact, I think one of the reasons its so prevalent in media is because we're so secretive about it elsewhere....leading us to look to other avenues for it. I think our society still has a bunch of sexual hangups, and we'd be better off without them. In fact, this very thread indicates this. Sex is a natural function...what's wrong with seeing it protrayed in movies, etc? It's only a big deal because of our attitudes towards it. If we all talked more openly about sex, then there wouldn't be any benefit to having it in all our media, as there wouldn't be as much of a market for it.

Hardly. I think that the reason "sex sells" is that it titillates the puritanical streak in America. I think we are a very prudish country when it comes to sex. Heck, the FCC has already sanitized radio and TV of "prurient" content. Heaven forbid we hear about a sex act or see a naked body part. ohmy.gif

Hmm. I don't know. In my younger days, I bought Victoria's Secret lingerie, but I don't think it was because of the sexy models. w00t.gif I think Hobbes is right; beautiful people selling products is more pleasing to the viewer than watching something like Digger the Damatiphite (or whatever that horrid thing is).

I wish American society would just relax and realize that sex is not evil. My gosh, don't we have more important things to worry about than what's going on in someone else's bedroom or who's modeling Calvin Klein underwear? There are segments in our society that just needs to lighten up! We were all born naked with no inhibitions, and then we are taught shame. Sex and sexuality are normal (and fun!).

Not saying there is something wrong with sex in movies or even media Hobbes, but really its in everything. I can understand it in some movies but it more often seems obligitory and derails the pace of the film. I can understand the use in some types of advertising--but shampoo? either the botanical one or the dandruff one--i mean really c'mon.
Isn't there a point where its just too much? Is there a point where is just cheapens the whole thing?

In the case of the taboo of sex in our society I wasn't raised in a religious environment and therefore missed the whole guilt and sex aspect of sin. I do however begin to wonder what this obsession with sex says about us.
