Given Rudy's immense popularity, from the center--both Democratic and Republican-- how strong would his shot at the Presidency be? Could he be beaten?
Who could the Dems nominate to have a real chance against Rudy?
Given what you at this point in time know about Rudy would you vote for him?
1. There's no denying Giuliani's popularity to centrists and he would be a strong candidate for the Republicans---The Republican Party of 1976. With his messy divorce, pro-gay and pro-choice stands, Giuliani is reminiscient of another popular New York Republican moderate, Nelson Rockerfeller. But the GOP of 2005 is far too far to the right to put a mushy social moderate at the top of the ticket. I don't see how the religious evangelicals would accept Giuliani as the party nominee. Crazy Pat Robertson may not think Rudy's so bad, but has he checked with James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, and some of the other wingnuts who are wagging the dog in the GOP? He paid $6.8 million to divorce Donna Hanover. Think that won't bug the "family values" crowd about their next president?
Giuliani has very little chance of winning the nomination. The GOP probably hopes he changes his mind about challenging Hillary in 2006.
2. A real chance? What's that? A lot of candidates look pretty good until they actually get on the campaign trail and face the scrutiny of the press and other challengers. I doubt that if Rudy ran, other Republicans with far better conservative credentials wouldn't severely bruise him during the primaries. Rudy would do very well with the Reagan Democrats and other moderates, but I have doubts that he has mass appeal especially to voters of color.
3. There is no circumstance where I would vote for Rudy Giuliani. And that's based upon what I
do know about him.
