QUOTE
Pat Robertson recently made these comments  on ABC News's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" In response to a question about whether religious conservatives would split off from the Republican Party if a moderate like Mayor Giuliani were nominated for president, Rev. Robertson quickly said, "I don't think so.
Rudy is a very good friend of mine, and he did a super job running the City
of New York. And I think he'd make a good president. I like him a lot.
Although he doesn't share all of my particular points of view on social
issues, he's a very dedicated Catholic. And he's a great guy."

While not a complete and open endorsement of Rudy--its a pretty heavy statement to make. Robertson also made clear he does not see Bill Frist as President.

While there are elements within the Christian Hard Right tha will scream bloody murder if a Moderate wins the nomination, Robertson carries some very heavy weight. He also made it clear he would never support John McCain--ever.

Given Rudy's immense popularity, from the center--both Democratic and Republican-- how strong would his shot at the Presidency be? Could he be beaten?

Who could the Dems nominate to have a real chance against Rudy?

Given what you at this point in time know about Rudy would you vote for him?

The biggest challenge Rudy would face would be from his own party...Specifically the Christian Right and social conservatives would go after him hard...But if he found a way to win the primary, no one could beat him. So if the Repubs want another 4 years at least of an Elephant in the White House, all they need to do is get Rudy through the Primary.

Obama would have the best chance, but he'd lose anyway. He's still not experienced enough, Rudy would have no problem with him...It's not Barrak's time yet.

He's the only Republican or Democrat I'd vote for right now. A pro-liberty capitalist who is tough on terror, pinch me. I'd vote for him in a heart beat...But you already knew that.

1. There's no denying Giuliani's popularity to centrists and he would be a strong candidate for the Republicans---The Republican Party of 1976. With his messy divorce, pro-gay and pro-choice stands, Giuliani is reminiscient of another popular New York Republican moderate, Nelson Rockerfeller. But the GOP of 2005 is far too far to the right to put a mushy social moderate at the top of the ticket. I don't see how the religious evangelicals would accept Giuliani as the party nominee. Crazy Pat Robertson may not think Rudy's so bad, but has he checked with James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, and some of the other wingnuts who are wagging the dog in the GOP? He paid $6.8 million to divorce Donna Hanover. Think that won't bug the "family values" crowd about their next president?

Giuliani has very little chance of winning the nomination. The GOP probably hopes he changes his mind about challenging Hillary in 2006.

2. A real chance? What's that? A lot of candidates look pretty good until they actually get on the campaign trail and face the scrutiny of the press and other challengers. I doubt that if Rudy ran, other Republicans with far better conservative credentials wouldn't severely bruise him during the primaries. Rudy would do very well with the Reagan Democrats and other moderates, but I have doubts that he has mass appeal especially to voters of color.

3. There is no circumstance where I would vote for Rudy Giuliani. And that's based upon what I do know about him.

There is a myth propagated by both the Democrats and Republicans that the other party's nomination process is controlled by the extremists. This is false. In the last 50 years the only individuals who were not moderate nominated for President are Ronald Reagan 1980, George McGovern 1972 and Barry Goldwater in 1964. Guliani has as good a chance as anyone.

Given Rudy's immense popularity, from the center--both Democratic and Republican-- how strong would his shot at the Presidency be? Could he be beaten? I don't think he has any shot because he has to win the republican nomination.

To win the republican nomination he has to win primaries among very conservative christian voters. I have serious doubts he could do that. Since 1980 no republican has won the nomination without winning the South Carolina Primary. Could a liberal, pro choice, New Yorker win the South Carolina Republican Primary? No way.

Who could the Dems nominate to have a real chance against Rudy?
A Southern Governor. That would make the democrat seem like a down home bumpkin compared to the big city, immoral, Giuliani. Or maybe Hillary (never underestimate a Clinton).

Given what you at this point in time know about Rudy would you vote for him?
No way. It won't be an issue anyway since the Republicans will go with their gut and nominate the Santorum/Brownback ticket! sour.gif

I think he has a good chance at the primaries, but remember that he will be up against more popular candidates with stronger chances. If he got lucky, he MIGHT get the nomination.

However, I see his chances as lesser in the general. If he goes up against hillary, he'll have to fight her to the death to win New York, and if he goes up against obama, he will be shut out of liberal-moderate states, which will force him to campaign in conservative states, where they don't like him anyways. He could definitely carry us New Hampshirites, though.

Try: anyone. He has the popularity and name recognition to run, but he's between a rock and a hard place.

Given what you at this point in time know about Rudy would you vote for him?

laugh.gif w00t.gif He's a republican! tongue.gif Okay okay, try this: I might be persuaded to vote for John McCain, but only if the democrats were running this guy:
