Hello to all who dropped PE a birthday wish. I know you were expecting some feedback from her, but it was an unusual birthday. We have been at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America since Monday morning.
Monday started with a full body Cat scan and bone scan to see if there were any tumors that weren't caught earlier. Yesterday we got the news that there was one spot in one of her lungs, about 6 mm (1/4") in diameter. "It needs to be watched, but doesn't justify a biopsy in that location." was the verdict. The overall prognosis was that the number of tumors she had had removed placed her in a category of Stage 2 cancer, but that the upcoming regimen of chemotherapy and radiation was prophylactic. "Bad news and very good news," was how her oncologist phrased it.
She was originally scheduled for surgery yesterday to implant a port under the skin to facilitate chemotherapy. That was delayed until today, so we got to have a nice birthday dinner. The delay also allowed us to give her an unusual birthday present.
She had been inquiring as to whether acupuncture could reduce the frequency and severity of her hot flashes. The opinion of the doctors was, "Yes, it can be very helpful." The opinion of our insurance provider was, "We only pay for acupuncture when the patient is willing to use it in lieu of general anesthesia as a method of controlling pain during major surgery." (
Lorrie Morgan said it simpler.) So PE's birthday was what was supposed to be a quiet, uneventful day, and the actual cost of an acupuncture treatment was very reasonable. The earliest appointment however was 2:30 PM today, and she is scheduled for surgery at 2:00 PM today. Her oncologist told his nurse, "Get ahold of scheduling, use my name if you have to, and pull some strings. This woman deserves to have a birthday present." From there on out, the day's schedule filled in, equipment for a scheduled test broke down, and schedule changes and decisions were a constant part of a very busy day, but at some point they managed to give her an acupuncture treatment for her hot flashes. (The verdict is still out as to how effective it was, and she is scheduled for a follow-up session.)
We dropped her off at admitting a couple hours ago, and it is several hours until surgery. In the meantime, she is in limbo as it were, prepped and waiting, unable to eat or drink, on the lowest floor of the hospital. The patient access computers are on the fourth floor. So... It will likely be Saturday before she has access to the net again, but she asked me to say "Hi" and "Thanks for the birthday wishes!" to all of her friends on AD.
And PE, let's try to plan a simpler birthday next year!
