Looking at the Washington Post and USA Today, I cannot see why USA Today is the #1 Newspaper in the nation. Sure, they've got color, layout, etc. But, where are the indepth stories! mad.gif

Well, what newspapers does everyone else read? The region newspapers? The local newspapers? Or nationwide?

I think, but I could be wrong, that USA Today is meant to be a newspaper that gives the top news stories quickly rather than in depth. Kind of a people-on-the-go idea.

As for me, I have been a subscriber to U.S. News and World Report for many, many years. I also read the San Diego Union Tribune, which is ok for local stories. But, even so there are many important local news stories the newspaper chooses not to cover.

Sometimes I get better heads-up type of news from a local talk show that is run by the same person for the last 18 years and he used to be the mayor of this city - so he is quite knowledgeable about the people and events here. Then, I look up further information on the news he reports. That works for local news.

I also watch a fair amount of C-Span. I volunteer three times a week at the library and I get to see quite a cross section of newspapers and magazines there.

USA Today is number one because it competes in every market of the country. I agree with you about the Washington Post and I refer to that web site first for news updates.

But I like USA Today. It may be news light, but if I pick up one on the go I at least will see if there is something outside of our local radar that merits looking into.

My town paper is worthless

the only thing halfway decent to read is the opinion page (letter to the Editor) & the comics

Example: Main HUGE Headline: Local School Kids go To Zoo

Small column: Osama captured (this is an example mind you)

The only time National news made a whole front page was 9/11

This is how sad my local paper is

From a pure journalism (as opposed to an editorial) standpoint, I prefer the LA Times over any other single source. They are not only good at reporting things, but when it comes to bias or conflict of interest in a story, they are their own worst critic. Too bad the LA Times editorial staff seems not to read their own paper, they'd be far more informed than they are.
